Summary: This study assessed the risk factors for complications after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. The results showed that smoking and hypercholesterolemia were independent risk factors for early complications, while smoking, peptic ulcer diseases, and hiatal hernia were independent predictors of late complications.

Summary: Surgical therapy for post-bariatric surgery complications can have high morbidity and mortality rates. Endoscopic options like fully covered self-expandable metallic stents (SEMS) offer significant benefits for managing leaks and obstructions following bariatric surgery. In cases of treatment failure with SEMS, further endoscopic techniques can usually resolve the situation.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study aims to determine the rates and indications of reoperations following primary lumbar fusion and identify the independent risk factors for early and late reoperations. The study found that surgical site infection and adjacent segment diseases were the most common reasons for early and late reoperations, respectively. Osteoporosis and diabetes were identified as independent risk factors for early reoperation, while multilevel fusion was a risk factor for late reoperation.

Summary: This study examines the impact of preoperative HbA1c levels on postoperative complications in obese patients with diabetes undergoing bariatric surgery. The results show that elevated HbA1c levels are not associated with increased postoperative complications, length of stay, surgical time, or readmission rates.

Summary: In a US integrated healthcare system, the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) was highest among patients newly diagnosed with T2D, while the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) was lower. Factors such as older age, sex, A1C levels, smoking, and hypertension were associated with increased incidence of CKD and CVD in T2D patients. Despite lower incidence rates of T2D complications in more recent years, a significant number of patients had complications at diagnosis, emphasizing the importance of early preventive therapies and managing modifiable factors to delay development and progression of T2D complications.

Summary: The Latarjet procedure is effective for treating anterior glenohumeral joint instability, but complications are common, with graft- and nerve-related complications being significant. Fixation with only 1 screw and an increased screw divergence angle are significant predictors of graft failure.

Summary: The study found that using the extraperitoneal approach in pediatric kidney transplantation can be successful in both low-weight and normal-weight patients, with no significant difference in the overall complication rate between the two groups. However, a higher incidence of venous thrombosis was observed in the low-weight group.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the characteristics and factors associated with early biliary complications after bariatric surgery. The findings showed that early biliary complications are rare but have a significant impact on patient morbidity. Female gender, postoperative weight loss, and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery were identified as the main predictors for early biliary complications.

Summary: The study demonstrates a gradual increase in the utilization of MBS among adolescents and a significant shift from laparoscopic gastric bypass to sleeve gastrectomy. There has been a shift towards more diverse patient demographics, with an increase in Hispanics and patients with public insurance. The data also shows a trend of MBS cases moving towards teaching hospitals over the years.

Summary: Despite low mortality rates and advancements in techniques, late complications can still occur after bariatric surgeries, including stenosis and reflux in sleeve gastrectomy patients, and ulceration, stricture, and fistula in Roux-en-Y gastric bypass patients. Clinicians may also encounter biliary pathologies and weight regain in these patients. This narrative review provides an update on the endoscopic evaluation and management of late complications in both types of bariatric surgeries.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of prior bariatric surgery on patients presenting with severe alcoholic hepatitis. The results showed that patients who had prior bariatric surgery were younger at the diagnosis of hepatitis, but there were no significant differences in disease severity or outcome compared to patients without prior surgery. These findings support the need for early detection of alcohol use disorder in patients who underwent bariatric surgery, particularly Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.
