Summary: For elderly patients with sigmoid volvulus, the risk of surgery is high due to their old age and multiple comorbidities. Therefore, early intervention is necessary to avoid serious complications. In this study, early endoscopic untwist of sigmoid colon followed by endoscopic fixation of sigmoid colon under sedation was found to be effective and safe in managing sigmoid volvulus and preventing surgical complications.

Summary: Chilaiditi's syndrome is a condition characterized by the abnormal positioning of the colon, which can be caused by various factors. It is usually asymptomatic and found incidentally on radiological studies. This case report presents a patient with Chilaiditi's syndrome associated with sigmoid volvulus and abdominal tuberculosis, which was managed surgically.

Summary: Sigmoid volvulus is a common surgical emergency, especially in elderly patients, who can present with a wide range of clinical states. Urgent treatment, such as endoscopic decompression or colectomy, is generally required.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the efficacy and safety of percutaneous endoscopic sigmoidopexy (PES) in the treatment of recurrent sigmoid volvulus. The results showed that PES was feasible and effective, and could be considered as an alternative to elective sigmoidectomy in inoperable patients.

Summary: Sigmoid volvulus commonly occurs in elderly, bed-bound, chronically constipated individuals, but it can also happen in individuals who have experienced blunt abdominal trauma. We present a unique case of sigmoid volvulus in a patient who had no previous abdominal complaints or surgical history, but sustained blunt traumatic injuries from being struck by a motor vehicle. Prompt recognition by emergency clinicians and rapid surgical correction helped mitigate further morbidity and mortality.

Summary: Acquired or adult-onset hypoganglionosis is a rare form of intestinal innervation disorder characterized by reduced myenteric ganglia and low acetylcholinesterase activity. We report a rare case of colonic hypoganglionosis in a 25-year-old female who presented with sigmoid volvulus. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis, highlighting the importance of full-thickness biopsies in confirming the diagnosis and preventing complications.

Summary: Sigmoid volvulus is a rare condition in children, with common symptoms including abdominal pain, distension, and vomiting. It is associated with Hirschsprung disease, neurodevelopmental disorders, and chronic constipation. Non-operative treatment has a higher risk of recurrence, and counseling about recurrence risk and consideration of definitive surgery is recommended post non-operative treatment.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the factors affecting recurrence in sigmoid volvulus (SV).
It was found that age, gender, dietary habit, living at high altitude, and chronic constipation may influence the recurrence rate.

Summary: This study aimed to report contemporary outcomes and evaluate literature-based methods for identifying sigmoid volvulus using diagnostic and procedural codes. The results showed that literature-based strategies poorly identified sigmoid volvulus, and delayed surgery was associated with worse outcomes.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the epidemiological features of sigmoid volvulus in Tunisia and assess its surgical management. The results showed that although Tunisia belongs to the volvulus belt, the epidemiological features of sigmoid volvulus in Tunisia tend to be similar to those in developed countries. Primary surgery is a viable treatment option.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to analyze the treatment outcomes for sigmoid volvulus (SV) and identify risk factors of complications and mortality. The study found that conservative treatment had higher mortality rates compared to urgent or elective surgery, and an ASA score > III was an independent risk factor for complications and mortality. Patients who underwent elective surgery had higher 2-year overall survival (OS) rates.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the role of sigmoid colon anatomic dimensions in sigmoid volvulus development. Results showed significant differences in sigmoid colon length, meso-sigmoid height, and width among sigmoid volvulus patients. A long and wide sigmoid colon may predispose individuals to sigmoid volvulus.

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between diabetes mellitus (DM) and sigmoid volvulus (SV). The study found that the occurrence of DM was higher in SV patients compared to the general population. However, the co-occurrence of SV and DM was lower in the study group compared to worldwide data. Additionally, the study found that the mortality rate was higher in DM cases compared to non-diabetics with SV.
