Summary: The study on the long-term safety and symptom control of extended-release methylphenidate in children aged 4 to <6 years showed that most treatment-emergent adverse events were of mild or moderate severity, weight and height z scores as well as obesity rates decreased significantly, with insomnia reported in 9% and hypertension in 6.7%, while ADHD symptom control was maintained.

Summary: This study found that transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) can significantly improve symptoms of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and increase blood flow in the prefrontal cortex within 4 weeks. Although the treatment did not show significant improvement in other evaluation measures, adverse events were rare and very mild.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the mismatch negativity (MMN) and P3a amplitude in adult ADHD patients and investigate the effects of methylphenidate (MPH) on these measures. The results showed that MPH treatment significantly reduced ADHD symptoms and improved daily functioning, but it did not significantly affect MMN amplitude. However, it did significantly reduce P3a amplitude compared to the healthy controls. Moreover, more severe ADHD symptoms were associated with larger MMN amplitudes in the patients.

Summary: This narrative review discusses the comorbidity of ADHD and SUDs and the complexity of treating these disorders with MPH. While MPH is considered a first-line pharmacotherapy for ADHD, its addictive potential makes it especially problematic for patients with SUDs. Careful diagnosis and treatment, along with responsible prescription practices and monitoring, are essential for safely and effectively treating ADHD with MPH in patients with SUDs.

Summary: This review challenges the prevailing deficit perspective on ADHD and emphasizes the importance of considering socio-economic status and family relationships in understanding and addressing this disorder. The role of parents in buffering or aggravating ADHD symptoms is highlighted, and a need for a biopsychosocial perspective is advocated to avoid reductionism and medicalization.

Summary: EEG studies showed that adult ADHD patients have less stable brain arousal regulation compared to controls, and psychostimulants like methylphenidate have stabilising properties. The study aimed to investigate the predictive value of brain arousal regulation stability in response to methylphenidate therapy in adult ADHD patients. The results indicated that stability in brain arousal regulation may play a role in predicting treatment success with methylphenidate.

Summary: Deficient information processing in ADHD may lead to sensory overload, but the study found no deficits in PPI and P50 suppression in adult, psychostimulant-naive patients with ADHD. Treatment with methylphenidate (MPH) improved symptoms and daily functioning, but unexpectedly decreased habituation abilities. This suggests that the difficulties in inhibiting distraction of attention in ADHD have a different origin than sensory overload in schizophrenia.

Summary: The study reviewed the association of long-term MPH exposure with height, weight, and timing of puberty in ADHD individuals. MPH was found to have consistent significant effects on reducing height and weight, with more prominent impacts observed in the initial months of treatment. Limited data were available on the timing of puberty. Prospective studies are needed to further explore the underlying biological mechanisms and potential clinical implications.

Summary: This study evaluated the sex-specific effects of stimulants on body mass index (BMI) z and height z trajectories in children with ADHD. It found that boys were more likely to experience a decline in height z score, while BMI trajectories were similar between boys and girls. Factors such as younger age at treatment initiation, better adherence, longer treatment duration, and lower socioeconomic status were associated with greater growth attenuation. Children without ADHD had higher baseline height z score and BMI z score compared to children with ADHD after 1 year of treatment.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of low doses of melatonin (aMT) on the sleep patterns of pediatric patients with ADHD receiving treatment with methylphenidate (MPH). The results showed that 1 mg of aMT significantly increased sleep duration in ADHD patients. The study also suggested further placebo-controlled trials adjusting the time of aMT administration to explore its effects on shortening sleep-onset latency.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate adult ADHD in outpatients seeking treatment for a behavioral addiction, and to identify the specific psychopathological features associated when the behavioral addiction cooccurs with adult ADHD. Sixty-five outpatients were assessed for ADHD, addictive disorders, impulsivity, and emotion dysregulation. Results showed that adult ADHD was independently associated with higher severity of compulsive sexual behavior disorder, sensation seeking, positive urgency, difficulties in goal-directed behavior, impulse control, and use of emotion regulation strategies in the context of intense emotions. 19% of the sample was diagnosed with adult ADHD. The findings suggest potential clinical and research perspectives regarding the association between adult ADHD, impulsivity, and emotion dysregulation.

Summary: This study evaluated the long-term effects of methylphenidate use on motivation. The results showed that long-term use of methylphenidate did not have a significant impact on motivation, but discontinuation of the drug may cause temporary changes in motivation. The importance of this study lies in its modeling of use in healthy individuals, and results may differ for individuals with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Summary: This study examines the long-term use of methylphenidate in adolescents and young adults with ADHD and its effects on blood pressure and left ventricular mass. The results suggest that long-term methylphenidate use is associated with slight increases in systolic blood pressure and heart rate during the day, but does not significantly affect left ventricular mass.

Summary: Long-term use of methylphenidate (MPH) in patients with ADHD is associated with slight increases in daytime systolic blood pressure and heart rate, but has no significant impact on blood pressure and left ventricular mass. Therefore, monitoring of blood pressure and heart rate during MPH treatment is recommended.

Summary: Humans and animals live in social relationships influenced by behaviors of approach and avoidance. Active social avoidance is often triggered by threat perception or unpleasant social experiences, relying on adaptive mechanisms in neuronal networks. Maladaptive processes in neuronal circuits may lead to pathological social avoidance in situations of strong stressors or individual dispositions.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between childhood maltreatment, aggression, and psychopathy in a sample of offenders. The results showed a consistent positive association between maltreatment and aggression, while psychopathy did not mediate this relationship. Psychopathy had a positive effect on aggressive behavior. The findings suggest the need for further research on the different subtypes of psychopathy in predicting aggressive behavior based on childhood maltreatment.

Summary: This study assessed the different perceptions of patients, nurses, and physicians regarding the impact of the pandemic on clinical management, decision-making processes, and burden. The results showed that the extent and perception of the pandemic's impact varied among different stakeholder groups, and there was a dissociated perception towards other stakeholders. Therefore, specific awareness should be raised to avoid the dissociation of impact perception between patients and professionals, which may result in impaired shared decision-making.
