Summary: This study investigates the effect of alkyl chain length of cations in ionic liquids (ILs) on in-situ transesterification (IST) of microalgae. The results show that shorter alkyl chains of cations are favorable for cellulose extraction and biodiesel yield.

Summary: Solutions of weakly coordinating ionic liquids (ILs) in alkyl carbonates have attracted attention due to their green solvents properties, but the understanding of ILs' phase behavior and structure in organic polar solvents is lacking. This study investigates the interactions and nanoscale structure of a specific IL, [BMIm][BARF], in alkyl carbonate solvents. The results show that [BMIm][BARF] is mostly undissociated in these solvents and the presence of rod-like nanostructures in the IL/solvent mixtures. The study also reveals that the self-assembly of nano-sized structures is hindered by slower ion diffusion in alkyl carbonates with lower dielectric constants. The findings have implications in various fields including batteries, catalysis, extraction, and bio-applications.

Summary: Through DFT computational study, it was found that imidazolium and pyridinium based ionic liquids exhibit good anticorrosive potential, with corrosion inhibition performance depending on the nature of alkyl groups and halide ions. Among the studied ionic liquids, certain compounds were found to show the best corrosion inhibition performance in both imidazolium and pyridinium based categories.

Summary: Polymers made of energetic ionic liquid building blocks are used as fuel-binder part in propellant compositions, exhibiting desired mechanical and energetic properties. Utilizing specific monomers and oxidizer, along with photo polymerization ability, allows for control over product properties and reduced content of heterogeneous oxidizer. Additionally, the importance of intermolecular interaction and achievement of pressure independent burn rates were identified in this study.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations and complementary experiments were used to study the inter- and intramolecular structures and conformational properties of imidazolium ionenes in an ionic liquid. Different chemical and structural variations of the polymers were found to affect their internal interactions and interactions with surrounding molecules, resulting in changes in chain flexibility and alignment of imidazolium groups. The concentration of alkyl groups and polymer architecture also play important roles in determining the polymer structure and properties.

Summary: A new strategy for direct access to fully substituted polycyclic imidazolium salts using alpha-enaminones and proline as the reagents is reported. This open-flask operation is a catalyst-, metal-, and Lewis acid-free green process, which does not require an ion-exchange step. It can produce good yields with minimal formation of side products, and is not limited to aryl substituents.

Summary: This study investigated the uptake and toxicity of imidazolium based ionic liquids (ILs) with different alkyl chain lengths by ryegrass. Results showed that long alkyl chain ILs had stronger growth inhibition on plants compared to short chain ILs, which were more easily absorbed and accumulated in plant tissues.

Summary: A continuous flow auto-frequency tuning single-mode microwave reactor is presented as a powerful platform for synthesizing alkyl imidazolium salts as ionic liquids/ionic liquid precursors. The reactor achieves near-quantitative yields, high productivities, and record space-time yields, and addresses challenges such as viscosity changes, dielectric property changes, and phase separations.

Summary: This study synthesized propanenitrile imidazolium-based ionic liquids with different functional groups (allyl, ethoxyl, and benzyl) and incorporating dioctylsulfosuccinate (DOSS) anion. The elemental analysis and NMR results confirmed the synthesized IL structures. The properties of these ILs, including density, viscosity, refractive index, and several thermodynamic properties, were measured and analyzed. The findings provide valuable insights into the properties and potential applications of these ILs.

Summary: A solvent-based green recycling procedure using ionic liquids and alcohols was reported for the recycling of thermoset epoxy resins and carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites under mild conditions. The study evaluated the swelling and depolymerization capacity of the materials in the presence of different alkyl-methyl-imidazolium ILs and alcohols. Complete dissolution of both TERs and CFRECs was achieved in 150 minutes at 150 degrees Celsius under atmospheric pressure. Recovery and reuse of the recycled monomer after dissolution were also examined, demonstrating similar mechanical properties to the parent TER and successful recovery of carbon fibers from CFRECs.

Summary: In this study, vertically oriented and hexagonally ordered pores have been synthesized and investigated in mesoporous silica thin films. Different alkyl-imidazolium ionic liquids have been used as templates to explore the effect of chain length and protic character on film formation and pore order. Various metal substrates, including indium titanium oxide (ITO) and gold, were employed for film deposition. Complementary experimental methods such as GISAXS, Infrared spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry were utilized to thoroughly investigate the morphology and permeability of the deposited thin films.

Summary: Imidazolium-based ionic liquids are popular for their low viscosity and melting point, but the hydrogen atom at the C2 position can be easily deprotonated. To design an inert ionic liquid, an unreactive alkyl or aryl group needs to be introduced at the C2 position. In this study, a new series of tunable aryl alkyl ionic liquids (TAAILs) with blocked C2 positions were synthesized and compared in terms of physicochemical properties. Additionally, the differences in electrochemical reduction potentials between blocked and unblocked TAAILs were investigated using quantum chemical methods.
