Summary: This study used high throughput sequencing to examine the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) community of Joshua trees along a climate gradient, revealing changes in AMF communities with elevation. Different fungal communities from varying elevations were found to have temporal effects on Joshua tree fitness.

Summary: This study investigated the variation in leaf physiology, morphology, and anatomy of Yucca brevifolia and Hesperoyucca whipplei in different microclimates of the Mojave Desert. It found differences in stomatal conductance and leaf thickness, with H. whipplei displaying a higher water conservation strategy than Y. brevifolia. These differences were related to variations in leaf venation and leaf width.

Summary: The progression of a spruce budworm outbreak over seven years is associated with increased soil nutrient fluxes and availability, as well as improved foliage quality in surviving host trees. This positive bottom-up feedback sustains the insect outbreak. Both predation and host nutritional quality influence insect outbreaks, and defoliation caused by insects can also alter the bottom-up effects. Our study demonstrates that herbivory leads to a positive feedback on outbreak severity through improved soil nutrient availability and increased nutrient concentration in plant tissues.

Summary: Rodents in the western USA store a large number of seeds, which provide a reliable source of seedling recruitment for desert plants. This study examined the contribution of prefire caching of short-lived seeds to postfire regeneration through artificial caching and greenhouse trials. The results suggest that prefire caches of short-lived seeds may recruit postfire seedlings, but only in specific circumstances.
