Summary: Hydrochars derived from hydrothermal carbonization of hickory wood, bamboo, and wheat straw were modified with potassium permanganate for effective sorption of heavy metals. The modified wheat straw hydrochar (WSHyC-0.2KMnO(4)) exhibited the highest adsorption capacity, attributed to its large specific surface area, abundant surface oxygenic functional groups, and significant presence of MnOx microparticles. Batch adsorption experiments demonstrated that WSHyC-0.2KMnO(4) had a faster adsorption rate and much higher adsorption capacity (12-17 times) for Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II) compared to WSHyC, due to increased OCFG and MnOx microparticles on its surface facilitating ion exchange, electrostatic interactions, and complexation mechanisms.

Summary: This article presents a nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots hybrid membrane that is synthesized through sol-gel technique and hydrothermal synthesis. The membrane shows efficient sorption of Cu(II), Co(II), and Pb(II) from spent batteries. The study indicates that the membrane has better selectivity for Cu(II) sorption and EDTA-2Na is the optimal desorbent.

Summary: Green and efficient separation adsorbents are highly sought after for the treatment of heavy metal ions wastewater. In this study, xanthan gum (XG) supported by fly ash magnetic beads (FAMB) was used to create adsorbent XG@FAMB. The effects of XG@FAMB dosage, solution pH, adsorption time, and initial concentration of Pb (II) and Cu (II) on the adsorption performance were investigated, and the maximum adsorption capacity of XG@FAMB for Pb (II) and Cu (II) was found to be 14.93 mg/g and 14.88 mg/g, respectively. XG@FAMB exhibited a monolayer adsorption mechanism controlled by chemical action, where Pb (II) and Cu (II) were coordinated with oxygen-containing functional groups on the XG@FAMB surface and accompanied by electrostatic adsorption. XG@FAMB combines the environmental protection advantages of XG and the easy solid-liquid separation properties of FAMB, showing good removal efficiency for Pb (II) and Cu (II).

Summary: The biomimetic composites of maple leaf-like MnO2-SiO2@PDA have shown excellent sorption capabilities for Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions, with high sorption capacities and resistance to salt interference. The main sorption mechanism is the strong surface complexation between functional groups on the MnO2-SiO2@PDA and the metal ions.

Summary: This study focused on the adsorption behavior of copper(II) and lead(II) onto humin extracted from a peat soil, using the NICA-Donnan model and C-13 CP/MAS NMR to determine functional group proportions. The results showed that the NICA-Donnan model effectively described and predicted the binding of these metallic cations onto humin.

Summary: In this study, a novel amino-functionalized Fe3O4-MnO2-SiO2-NH2 adsorbent material was prepared and shown to have high selectivity for removing Pb(II) in both mixed solution and single-solute solution. The material exhibited a core-shell structure with Fe3O4 as the core, SiO2 as the outer shell, and MnO2 located between them. The adsorption capacity of the material was greatly affected by the initial pH value. The kinetic and equilibrium data were well described by the pseudo-second-order model and Freundlich isotherm, respectively. The material showed excellent adsorption and desorption efficiencies over multiple cycles.

Summary: This study synthesized a ternary layered double hydroxide (LDH) composed of ZnII, FeIII, and AlIII for efficient removal of Cu(II) and Pb(II) from water samples. The synthesized LDH was characterized and found to have a mesoporous structure with a MII/MIII molar ratio of about 1.82. The sorption process of Cu(II) and Pb(II) was studied in detail, showing fast kinetics and the contribution of both surface sorption and intraparticle diffusion. The sorption isotherms were evaluated with different models, with Redlich-Peterson and Freundlich models showing better correlation. The thermodynamics study indicated the endothermic and spontaneous nature of the sorption process. Overall, the synthesized LDH exhibited favorable sorption capacity and thus is a promising candidate for heavy metal removal from water.

Summary: Attention has been paid to the application of biochar in the remediation of heavy metal contamination in soils. Two modification methods, bleaching and activation, were used to enhance the biochar sorption of Cu(II) and Pb(II). The study investigated the properties of bleached and activated biochars and discussed the main mechanisms of Cu(II) and Pb(II) sorption after modification using multiple techniques and density functional theory calculations. The results showed that both modifications had an excellent effect on sorption, especially the bleaching treatment. The study provides important guidance for the application of modified biochars in the sorption of heavy metals in the environment.

Summary: This study demonstrates the tunable covalent binding of lignin onto amine-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles for the removal of heavy metal pollutants from wastewater. The synthesized lignin-based magnetic adsorbents showed different adsorption performance towards Pb(II) with varying ratios of AMNP/lignin. The magnetic cores in the network facilitated the fast recovery of the magnetic adsorbents after the adsorption process, with good superparamagnetic properties.

Summary: In this study, we developed an innovative method to enhance the separation performance of magnetic hydroxyapatite by loading it with melamine sponge. The loaded material exhibited better magnetic separation performance and had a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 139.28 mg/g for Pb2+ at pH 4.85. Adsorption was found to be a chemical, heterogeneous, and endothermic process, with different mechanisms contributing different proportions to the total Pb2+ removal.

Summary: This paper demonstrates the first example of a magnetic loading functional porous liquid (PL) using hollow silicon dioxide loaded with Fe3O4 as the porous guest. The nanoadsorbent (Fe3O4@HS-PL) was prepared for the decontamination of aqueous solutions from Cu(II) and Pb(II) heavy metals. Fe3O4@HS-PL exhibited excellent adsorption capacities for Cu(II) and Pb(II) at ambient temperature, and various mechanisms were realized in this novel adsorption system.
