Summary: The effective utilization of waste plastics is crucial for environmental protection. This study proposes the use of waste plastic char as a reductant for recovering valuable metals from copper slag, showing that waste plastic char exhibits better reduction reactivity than coal in the second reduction regime.

Summary: China generates a large amount of solid waste from copper production each year, mainly from pyrometallurgy, which leads to significant environmental problems. Recycling copper pyrometallurgical solid waste (CPSW) is a common way to extract valuable metals, but its environmental effects are still not well understood. This study conducted a cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment to evaluate the impacts of recycling three main types of CPSW. The results showed that electricity consumption was the primary contributor to environmental impacts. Sensitivity analysis revealed that reducing electricity consumption and optimizing the electricity grid mix can mitigate the environmental impact. Comparative analysis demonstrated that CPSW recycling has significantly lower environmental impacts compared to primary metal production processes such as copper concentrate production, primary copper hydrometallurgy, and primary gold production.

Summary: Around one-third of global annual food production for human consumption is wasted, increasing pressure on the environment to support food supply-chains. Food waste reduction is crucial for a more sustainable world, recognized by the UN in its sustainable development goals. Food donation can help overcome social and environmental issues related to food waste, but it also comes with environmental impacts due to additional energy investment and gas emissions.

Summary: This study explores the feasibility of utilizing agro-industrial waste for eco-friendly alkali-activated blocks and finds that a combination of copper slag and fly ash results in the highest strength. Furthermore, the NaOH molar ratio has a significant influence on the performance of alkali-activated blocks. The findings highlight the importance of raw materials, curing temperature, and NaOH concentration in strength development.

Summary: This study compares the carbon footprints of pyrolysis technology enhanced by mechanical and biological treatment (MBT) with incineration technology, based on a process-oriented life cycle assessment. The results show that MBT-pyrolysis provides similar net carbon savings as incineration, but becomes more advantageous as the proportion of plastic waste increases and the energy system becomes greener. Optimizing the MBT-pyrolysis process can lead to even higher carbon footprint savings. With the future energy structure, MBT-pyrolysis is found to be superior to incineration in terms of carbon footprints.

Summary: This study proposes a direct alloying technology of molten steel using a self-reduction briquette composed of vanadium slag and graphite powder. The reduction behavior of the vanadium slag briquette is investigated thermodynamically and experimentally, and the relevant reaction mechanisms are discussed. The results show that increasing the C/O molar ratio and reduction temperature promotes further reduction of the vanadium slag. The briquette basicity also has a positive influence on the reduction of vanadium slag to a certain extent.

Summary: A novel carbon-free smelting reduction process using secondary aluminum dross as the reductant, co-modified with CaO and Na2O, was proposed for recovering valuable metals from molten copper slag. The effects of Na2O addition on metal recovery and slag properties were investigated under different CaO/SiO2 ratios. The results showed that Na2O reduced the melting temperature of the slag and improved its flowability. The optimal experimental conditions achieved high metal recovery rates. Therefore, this process has great potential for practical applications.

Summary: This study investigated the carbon emissions during the treatment of municipal solid waste (MSW) from Qingdao City under different disposal modes. It was found that the carbon emissions depended on the disposal modes, with incineration serving as a carbon sink. The study suggests separating food waste, improving the recycling efficiency of recyclable waste, and reducing biogas leakage as feasible strategies to reduce carbon emissions from MSW disposal units.
