Occurrence of Mycobacterium avium subsp paratuberculosis in milk at dairy cattle farms: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Presence of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) in milk for human consumption is a concern due to its possible relationship with Crohn's disease in humans. Pasteurization effectively reduces the MAP load by four to five logs, but the efficacy depends on the MAP concentration, which depends on the prevalence among contributing herds and individuals. Considerable variation of MAP in bulk tank milk (BTM) and individual cow's milk (IM) is reported, but factors associated with MAP occurrence in milk at farm level have not been described. This study systematically reviewed published studies aiming at estimating the occurrence of MAP in on-farm BTM and IM by meta-analysis. A total of 692 articles were identified through electronic databases and initially screened using title and abstract. The quality of the 61 potentially relevant articles was assessed using full text and 31 articles were eventually included in the meta-analysis. The apparent prevalence (AP) of MAP in BTM and IM on farm were summarized in relation to strata defined by the test used to identify MAP and the infection status of the herds/animals. There was considerable inconsistency in the reporting, resulting in missing information potentially explaining the dispersion in the estimated AP. The overall AP and 95% confidence intervals based on PCR and culture of MAP were summarized to 0.10 (0.04-0.22) in BTM and 0.20(0.12-0.32) in IM. Quantifying the MAP load in test-positive milk samples was not possible because very few articles provided quantitative information on individual samples. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Summary: Copper is an essential micronutrient used in farming pest management, but excessive exposure can have adverse health effects. This Scientific Opinion resolves the divergent existing Health-Based Guidance Values (HBGVs) for copper using a harmonized approach. Hepatic copper retention is identified as an early marker for potential adverse effects, and a daily intake of 5 mg/day is determined to not cause retention. Dietary exposure to copper does not exceed the HBGV in most population groups, except for infants and toddlers who are exposed to copper through formula.

Simulation of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Spread and Effects of Mitigation Strategies to Support Veterinary Contingency Planning in Denmark

Summary: In order to enhance livestock disease emergency preparedness in Denmark, 15 different strategies to mitigate foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) were examined. The study found that implementing additional mitigation strategies on top of basic control strategies did not provide significant benefits. The results emphasize the importance of basic mitigation strategies in FMD control in Denmark.

Summary: This paper examines animal welfare provisions in dairy cattle production across five EU countries and finds that Denmark and Sweden have the highest level of welfare provisions, followed by the United Kingdom. Germany and the Netherlands have lower levels of documented welfare provisions. The study also highlights differences in the elements of welfare focused on and the effect of national legislation or industry standards on welfare.

Immunohistochemical study of CD31 and α-SMA expression for age estimation of porcine skin wounds

Summary: This study evaluated the expression of CD31-positive blood vessels and alpha-SMA-positive myofibroblasts in granulation tissue as markers for porcine wound age estimation in veterinary forensic investigations. The results showed that a combination of three parameters (mean blood vessel counts and alpha-SMA expression) could approximately determine the age of the wounds. However, in some forensic cases, the application of these markers did not match with the expression pattern observed in experimental wounds.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of feeding milk fermented with a combination of four probiotic bacterial strains on reducing the occurrence of calf-diarrhoea. The results showed that this feeding approach did not significantly reduce the prevalence of diarrhoea but had a detrimental effect on daily-weight-gain.

Summary: Based on extensive literature review, vector or reservoir species of five fish diseases listed in the Animal Health Law were identified for possible updating of Regulation (EU) 2018/1882. The classification of a species as a vector or reservoir depended on diagnostic test results and the transmission of pathogens to susceptible species. The risk of pathogen spread exists for vector species, while reservoir species can also potentially transmit the disease.

Summary: Vector or reservoir species for three crustacean diseases were identified based on an extensive literature review to possibly update a regulation. The classification depended on evidence of the pathogens found in crustacean species and the transmission from one species to another. While the risk of spread by vectors was not quantified, it was proven that infected vector species can transmit the pathogens. Conditions that may prevent transmission by vectors during transport were identified. WSSV, TSV, and YHV are likely to remain infective under any possible transport condition, suggesting that vector or reservoir species may transmit them.

Summary: Vector or reservoir species of five mollusc diseases listed in the Animal Health Law were identified based on evidence generated through an extensive literature review, with different levels of certainty depending on the diagnostic tests used. The risk of spread of the pathogens by vector or reservoir species exists, as transmission from infected vector species to susceptible species was proven. The presence of an intermediate host is necessary for the transmission of M. refringens.

The animal species for infection with G. salaris according to Article 8 criteria are provided.

Forensic age assessment of late-term bovine fetuses

Summary: This study evaluated the reliability of fetal parameters for forensic age assessment of late-term Holstein fetuses. The results showed that both fetal body weight and tooth eruption time are not reliable parameters for determining whether a fetus has passed the G90 threshold.

Summary: This study investigated the associations between pathological manifestations and pathogens in pigs with and without post-weaning diarrhoea (PWD). The results showed that most of the pigs had gastric lesions, but gastric ulcers were less common in PWD pigs compared to pigs without PWD. Abnormal content in the colon was associated with PWD. No apparent associations were found between lesions and the various pathogens or a combination of these.

Assessing welfare risks in unowned unsocialised domestic cats in Denmark based on associations with low body condition score

Summary: This study aimed to assess the factors associated with the health condition of domestic cats. The study found that season, age, and gender were associated with low body condition score (BCS). In addition, cats with ear mite infection and gastrointestinal problems were also more likely to have low BCS.
