Here we report the isolation of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) from cloacal swabs obtained from penguins in the South Atlantic Antarctic region (62 degrees 08S, 58 degrees 25W). Samples of 100 penguins from King George Island were tested by real-time PCR, of which 2 (2%) were positive for NDV. The positive samples were isolated in embryonated chicken eggs and their matrix and fusion proteins genes were partially sequenced. This was complemented by the serological study performed on the blood of the same specimens, which resulted in a 33.3% rate of positivity. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Amanda G. Bendia, Flavia Callefo, Maicon N. Araujo, Evelyn Sanchez, Veronica C. Teixeira, Alessandra Vasconcelos, Gislaine Battilani, Vivian H. Pellizari, Fabio Rodrigues, Douglas Galante

Summary: The study explores microbial communities in a silica and iron-rich cave in Brazil, revealing metabolic potentials and genetic diversity of prokaryotic lineages. Through genomic analysis, novel microbial lineages related to anaerobic methane oxidation, iron oxidation, and radiation resistance were identified, providing important genomic information about these organisms with potential implications for astrobiology research.

Juliana Correa Neiva Ferreira, Natascha M. Bergo, Pedro M. Tura, Mateus Gustavo Chuqui, Frederico P. Brandini, Luigi Jovane, Vivian H. Pellizari

Summary: Marine microbes play a crucial role in controlling the distribution and diversity of matter and energy in the oceans. This study provides the first insights into the abundance, taxonomy, and diversity of picoplankton and their ecological processes in the Fe-Mn deposit region of the Rio Grande Rise in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean.

Summary: This study analyzed the composition and diversity of bacteria and archaea in deep-sea Fe-Mn crusts, nodules, and sediments from the Atlantic Ocean. The results showed that the microbiome of Fe-Mn deposits in the Atlantic seamounts had lower diversity and richness compared to the Pacific areas. Unique taxa and a higher abundance of potential metal-cycling bacteria were found in the crusts and nodules from Atlantic seamounts. The microbial beta-diversity was clearly grouped according to the microhabitats and geochemistry of the samples. These findings demonstrate the importance of microbial community analysis in environmental baseline studies for areas within the potential of deep-sea mining.

Summary: Comparative transcriptome analysis, along with clinico-demographic and laboratory data, revealed differences in the molecular mechanisms underlying COVID-19 severity between mild and severe cases and between age subgroups. Three transcriptional modules were identified that correlated with disease traits, along with 23 differentially expressed genes associated with disease severity. These biomarkers may aid in better risk stratification for COVID-19.

Summary: Since December 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has been affecting the world, and now multiple variants are emerging. This study compared the effects of the wild-type (Wt) (Wuhan) strain, P.1 (Gamma) variant, and Delta variant in infected K18-hACE2 mice. The P.1-infected mice showed more severe clinical manifestations and weight loss compared to the other groups. The respiratory capacity was also reduced in P.1-infected mice. Pulmonary histological findings revealed a more aggressive disease with P.1 and Delta variants compared to the Wt strain.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of IFN-lambda-3 polymorphism on specific IgG responses for COVID-19 in older adults seropositive for CMV. The results suggested that both CMV seropositivity and the homozygosis for allele 1 (C/C) in IFN-lambda-3 gene can negatively impact the antibody response to COVID-19 infection and vaccination in older adults.

A 47-year-old unvaccinated female patient with thrombophilia was diagnosed with COVID-19 and developed urticarial and maculopapular eruptions. Viral genome sequencing identified the VOI Zeta (P.2). The patient's symptoms and skin manifestations improved over time, indicating a correlation with the reduction in D-dimer levels.

Summary: Active volcanoes in Antarctica can disperse pyroclastic minerals to the surrounding glacial environment, carrying nutrients and microorganisms. This study analyzed the microbial community structure of an Antarctic glacier ice with tephra layers and found a highly diverse community dominated by Bacteroidetes, Cyanobacteria, and Proteobacteria. Functional analysis revealed complete carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur biogeochemical cycles, with potential applications in biotechnology.
