Summary: The paper describes tests conducted to determine the effectiveness of a simple method for reducing friction force in linear pneumatic actuators. The method involves using commercial lip seals in a non-conventional manner, mounted opposite to conventional installations. Two different non-conventional installations were tested, using commercial spring-energized seals made of different materials. The performance was evaluated by comparing leakage flow rate and friction force between the proposed installation and conventionally mounted seals.

Summary: Braking forces in passenger trains are generated by disc brake units, with friction forces influenced by various factors such as relative velocity, temperatures, and normal pressure. A mathematical model has been developed to link these variables to the friction coefficient for accurate estimation of braking distances.

Summary: Railcar axles are large-size parts manufactured using forging methods, and more efficient manufacturing methods are being sought. Cross wedge rolling (CWR) is a promising line of research in this respect. However, there are currently no rolling mills capable of manufacturing such large-size parts. By taking advantage of the symmetric shape of a railcar axle, simulations were made to demonstrate the effectiveness of a proposed rolling process, and the high quality of railcar axles produced under industrial conditions confirmed the effectiveness of the developed CWR method.

Summary: Water-rail intermodal transportation can reduce cargo losses and transportation transferring costs. However, the imbalance between the capacity of the scheduled railway network and the large container freight demand greatly reduces operational efficiency. To minimize the total transportation cost and relocation cost, a railcar reallo-cation stochastic optimization model is formulated to deal with uncertain congestion in the railway network. To capture the uncertain busyness and queuing pattern, a hypercube spatial queue model is embedded in the optimization model by estimating the expected queue length and waiting time. To solve the proposed nonlinear nonconcave stochastic model, an approximate hypercube based iterative algorithm is proposed. A real-world case study is presented to show the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method. The proposed model outperforms the comparable deterministic model in the objective value. Sensitivity analyses on the ratio of the unit waiting cost and the unit travel cost for empty cars, and the total number of freight cars show the robustness of the proposed method.

Summary: In this study, the friction torque estimation for semi-rotary pneumatic actuators has been automated using MATLAB/Stateflow (R) tools, which eliminates potential user or random errors and allows for more data processing. The system, integrated with a graphical user interface, enables easy utilization of the automated setup. The automated method accurately estimates the friction parameters and proves to be very helpful in control applications.

Summary: Respiratory mucosal surfaces are continuously exposed to innocuous non-self antigens and pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs). Despite the potential for immune responses, there are regulatory mechanisms in the lung that tightly control immune homeostasis and prevent the development of aberrant immune responses. Understanding these mechanisms could lead to the development of new therapeutic strategies for lung diseases like asthma.

Summary: This paper studies the parameter identification problem of linear discrete period time-varying (LDPV) systems and proposes a two-step identification algorithm based on the recursive least squares principle. By converting the LDPV system into a linear time-invariant system and combining with recursive least squares identification, a discrimination algorithm is suggested for parameter estimation.

Summary: In this research, a new identification method based on the blade eagle search algorithm (BES) is proposed to extract the optimal parameters of the supercapacitor model. The results show that the proposed approach is promising in constructing a reliable equivalent circuit of supercapacitors and estimates the parameters' values very close to the real ones.

Summary: In this paper, a modified eigensystem realization algorithm is extended to nonviscous damping system for modal parameter identification and relaxation parameter calculation. The state space formulation is used to express the equation of motion with nonviscous damping. The proposed method establishes a nonlinear relationship between the eigenvalues and the damping parameters of a nonviscous damping system. The accuracy of the method is verified through numerical examples.
