We report experimental evidence for bioconcentration of a low-pathogenicity avian influenza virus (H6N8) in the tissue of freshwater clams. Our results support the concept that freshwater clams may provide an effective tool for use in the early detection of influenza A viruses in aquatic environments.

Summary: The study found that predictors of avian influenza virus were associated with multiple mechanisms at both local and continental scales. Hypotheses characterizing local epidemic dynamics, such as age, age-specific aggregation of migratory birds in an area, and temperature, were strongly supported as the best predictors of infection.

Summary: This study investigates how landfill-foraging gulls acquire antimicrobial resistant bacteria from anthropogenic sources and subsequently disperse them through their migratory movements across continents. The results provide evidence of long-distance dispersal of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria by gulls, highlighting the potential global spread of such pathogens.
