Summary: Overfishing of sea cucumber Isostichopus badionotus from Yucatan has caused a major decline in population. The study compared the transcriptome of wild and farmed sea cucumbers, revealing impaired metabolism in farmed sea cucumbers, with possible causes such as sub-optimal growth environment and impaired nutrient utilization. Multiple key metabolic pathways important for nutrient handling were disrupted or dysregulated in farmed sea cucumbers, indicating underlying problems with aquaculture.

Animal and human RNA viruses: genetic variability and ability to overcome vaccines

Development of autogenous vaccines for farmed European seabass against Aeromonas veronii using zebrafish as a model for efficacy assessment

Summary: A bivalent vaccine was developed for the emerging pathogen Aeromonas veronii bv. sobria, causing significant problems in the European seabass aquaculture industry. The vaccine was evaluated in zebrafish and demonstrated protective effects. Subsequent trials in European seabass showed that the vaccine was effective against specific strains.

A New Strategy of Cross-Protection Based on Attenuated Vaccines: RNA Viruses Are Used as Vectors to Control DNA Viruses

Summary: Plant viruses pose a threat to agricultural production and food supply. Cross-protection is an effective strategy against severe viral strains. This study developed attenuated vaccines by inserting DNA virus sequences into an RNA virus, providing effective prevention against tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) infection and showing significant efficacy in preventing mixed infections.

Comparative analysis of swine leukocyte antigen gene diversity in European farmed pigs

Summary: The coronavirus pandemic highlights the need for effective vaccines against viral diseases. New platforms for vaccine creation, such as adenovirus vectors and mRNA vaccines, have shown potential in preventing coronavirus infection. However, these platforms have the disadvantage of limited antigen presentation, allowing the virus to evade immunity. The development of new vaccine platforms that can adapt to virus subtypes is urgently needed.

Comparative transcriptomic responses of European and Japanese larches to infection by Phytophthora ramorum

Identification of Efficacious Vaccines Against Contemporary North American H7 Avian Influenza Viruses

Summary: This study evaluated five vaccines in chickens for protection against a recent H7 highly pathogenic avian influenza virus from the United States. Two vaccines, including an inactivated vaccine and an RNA particle vaccine, were found to be effective in providing protection. The inactivated vaccine significantly reduced virus shedding post challenge and elicited high antibody responses.

Modification of the Spike Protein for Vaccines against Enveloped RNA Viruses

Summary: Most vaccines induce neutralizing antibodies targeting the viral envelope, but enveloped RNA viruses have evolved mechanisms to evade host immune responses. Natural infection and vaccines using native surface proteins may produce broadly neutralizing antibodies with limited effectiveness. Modified viral surface proteins based on stable fusion proteins of RNA viruses can induce neutralizing antibodies effective against various strains, overcoming antigenic escape/variability challenges.
