To assess in Italy the pre-pandemic susceptibility of the general population to the 2009 A/H1N1v influenza virus, 587 serum samples collected in 2004 were analyzed using haemagglutination-inhibition (HI), single-radial-haemolysis (SRH) and microneutralisation (MN) assays. Serum samples were stratified by age group, gender, and geographic area. Overall, using HI assay, the proportion of subjects showing antibodies cross-reacting with 2009 A/H1N1v virus at seroprotection level (>= 1:40) was estimated to be 6.7%, 12.4%, and 22.4% in individuals born between 2004 and 1949, 1948 and 1939, 1938 and 1909, respectively. With a HI antibody titre of >= 1:10, in the same birth cohort, the seroprotection levels were 13.5%, 19.2%, and 58.2%, respectively. The results suggest that the Italian population was not fully naif to the current pandemic virus and that the possible previous exposure and immune response increases with age. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection in migrants and ethnic minorities compared with the general population in the European WHO region during the first year of the pandemic: a systematic review

Anissa Jaljaa, Susanna Caminada, Maria Elena Tosti, Franca D'Angelo, Aurora Angelozzi, Claudia Isonne, Giulia Marchetti, Elena Mazzalai, Dara Giannini, Federica Turatto, Chiara De Marchi, Angela Gatta, Silvia Declich, Scilla Pizzarelli, Salvatore Geraci, Giovanni Baglio, Maurizio Marceca

Summary: This study assessed the risk of COVID-19 infection among migrants and ethnic minorities in the 53 countries belonging to the WHO European Region. The findings indicate that during the first year of the pandemic, migrants and ethnic minorities were at higher risk of exposure and infection, and they were disproportionately represented among COVID-19 cases. Some ethnic groups appear to be more at risk than others, with factors such as high-risk occupations, overcrowded accommodations, geographic distribution, social deprivation, and barriers to access to information contributing to the disparities.

Summary: The implementation of preparedness strategies to prevent and mitigate global health threats is challenging. The One Health approach, which promotes collaboration among different disciplines and sectors, can be applied to national and international preparedness phases. This discussion focuses on identifying gaps and needs in preparedness strategies and proposes actionable recommendations for coordinated prevention and preparedness strategies for early assessment and management of global health threats.

Summary: Winter in the northern hemisphere is characterized by seasonal epidemics of influenza viruses, which have different patterns each year. In the 2021/2022 season, after the absence of influenza viruses last season, cases of influenza reemerged but remained below the seasonal average. There was also co-circulation of influenza viruses and the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic virus, highlighting the need for constant monitoring of these viruses throughout the year.

Role of the National Immunisation Technical Advisory Groups in 13 European countries in the decision-making process on vaccine recommendations

Summary: In Europe, the implementation of National Immunisation Technical Advisory Groups (NITAGs) has not been optimal, despite their establishment in most countries. A survey conducted within the European Joint Action on Vaccination (EU-JAV) collected information on decision-making processes regarding the introduction of new vaccines or changes to recommendations. Disease burden and availability of financial resources were identified as the most relevant criteria. Collaboration between NITAGs could lead to better workload optimization and resource utilization.
