The shortened intradermal (ID) regimen saves vaccine doses, costs, and treatment time. Due to costs and vaccine shortage, dose-saving intradermal (ID) administration of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is encouraged by WHO.

Summary: Despite the fact that death from rabies is 100% preventable, canine rabies still causes a significant number of deaths worldwide, especially in Africa. In Cote d'Ivoire, the high drop-out rate of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) treatment among people exposed to dog bites remains a threat. A study conducted in the San-Pedro department of Cote d'Ivoire identified perception bias and low attendance at healthcare centers as key reasons for dropping out of treatment.

Summary: Pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis (PrEP) is recommended for individuals at risk of professional exposure to lyssavirus. A study on 498 vaccinated individuals found that a single booster dose of vaccine after PrEP conferred a high and long-term immune response in almost all individuals. This systematic rabies booster after primary vaccination may alleviate the post-PrEP antibody titer monitoring strategy among exposed professionals.

Summary: This study assessed the potential of the antiviral drug favipiravir as an alternative treatment for rabies. The results showed that using favipiravir with the rabies vaccine provided complete protection against death caused by the virus, and the virus-neutralizing antibody titer was significantly higher compared to the treatment with the vaccine and immunoglobulin. A clinical trial of this approach is needed, especially in countries with limited availability of immunoglobulin.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the appropriateness of medical management following suspected rabies exposure (SRE) in international travellers. The results showed that awareness for appropriate first aid and timely seeking of professional treatment is insufficient in German travellers. Travel practitioners need to educate travellers about rabies risk, prevention measures, and the correct behavior after SRE including adequate wound treatment and seeking immediate medical help for prophylaxis.

Summary: The report reveals that in 2020, over 90% of the patients visiting Tianjin PEP clinics were bitten by domestic dogs or cats, with about 70% of the animals having been vaccinated. Most outpatients have knowledge of rabies and demonstrate high compliance with PEP. To better control rabies, there is a need to focus on educating individuals lacking knowledge about rabies and raising awareness about the importance of PEP.
