OBJECTIVE Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a protein specifically expressed in prostate cells. Therefore, the expression levels of PSA in the blood are an important indicator when diagnosing prostate cancer. Defining the mechanism of PSA expression in prostate cells will be helpful for interpreting the expression of this protein during prostate cancer progression. Reports show that a membrane protein, claudin-7 (CLDN-7), is involved in the expression of PSA. However, the mechanism by which CLDN-7 regulates PSA expression is not clear. Here we identify proteins that interact with CLDN-7 and determine whether such proteins can regulate PSA expression in a pattern similar to that of CLDN-7. METHODS Our previous studies have demonstrated that in prostate cells, PSA can be regulated by a membrane protein, CLDN-7. It is important to identify the proteins that associate with CLDN-7 in its pathway of regulating PSA expression, because it is very unlikely that CLDN-7 can directly regulate PSA expression in the nucleus. To identify potential proteins that may directly interact with CLDN-7, we studied proteins that can interact with claudins. RESULTS We found that CLDN-7 interacts with the junctional adhesion molecule A (JAM-A), which is expressed in the prostate cancer cell line, LNCaP, which expresses PSA, but not the PSA-negative prostate cell line, DU145. JAM-A regulates the expression of the prostate-specific antigen in LNCaP cells in a pattern similar to CLDN-7. CONCLUSIONS Our results Suggest that JAM-A associates with CLDN-7 and it is a component in the pathway by which CLDN-7 regulates the expression of PSA. UROLOGY 73: 1119-1125, 2009. New mechanistic insights into the effect of cations on membrane fouling caused by anionic polyacrylamide

Bing Zhang, Heli Tang, Jinyu Chen, Bing Zhang, Yu Shen, Wenxin Shi

Summary: Understanding the effect of cations on membrane fouling is important, with higher ionic strength leading to increased membrane fouling and decreased flux recovery rate. Ca2+ was found to be more effective than Na+ in mitigating membrane fouling.

Summary: Dental caries is the most common chronic disease in children, and the role of Streptococcus mutans in its development is still not fully understood. This study explored the correlation between S. mutans levels and other microorganisms in the saliva of caries-concordant and discordant populations. The results showed that the salivary microbial communities clustered based on S. mutans levels and were independent of caries experience. Disease-associated species were increased in populations with high S. mutans levels, while health-associated species were more abundant in populations with low S. mutans levels. The study highlights the importance of considering additional microbial markers in conjunction with S. mutans for the diagnosis and management of dental caries in the discordant population.

Electrochemical surface reconstructed Ptx(x=2,3)Si/PtSi/p-Si photocathodes for achieving high efficiency in photoelectrochemical H2 generation

Haoyue Zhang, Guangwei She, Jing Xu, Shengyang Li, Yun Liu, Jun Luo, Wensheng Shi

Summary: In this study, a Ptx(x=2,3)Si/PtSi/p-Si photocathode was designed and fabricated to improve the photovoltage and enhance the hydrogen evolution reaction kinetics for efficient H-2 generation via PEC. The use of dopant segregation elevated the Schottky barrier height, leading to a high photovoltage, while in situ formation of a high catalytic activity Ptx(x=2,3)Si layer on the photocathode significantly enhanced the HER kinetics. The photocathode achieved a favorable onset potential for HER and a high saturated photocurrent density, with a maximum ABPE of 5.8% and excellent stability in long-term PEC H-2 generation testing.

CCR5 closes the temporal window for memory linking

Yang Shen, Miou Zhou, Denise Cai, Daniel Almeida Filho, Giselle Fernandes, Ying Cai, Andre F. de Sousa, Min Tian, Nury Kim, Jinsu Lee, Deanna Necula, Chengbin Zhou, Shuoyi Li, Shelbi Salinas, Andy Liu, Xiaoman Kang, Masakazu Kamata, Ayal Lavi, Shan Huang, Tawnie Silva, Won Do Heo, Alcino J. Silva

Summary: This study reveals that delayed expression of CCR5 after memory formation determines the duration of the temporal window for memory linking. It lowers neuronal excitability and regulates memory allocation, reducing memory overlap. Age-related increase in CCR5 expression impairs memory linking, which can be reversed with genetic knockout and a specific drug.

Perylenetetracarboxylic acid nanosheets with internal electric fields and anisotropic charge migration for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Yan Guo, Qixin Zhou, Jun Nan, Wenxin Shi, Fuyi Cui, Yongfa Zhu

Summary: This study synthesized perylenetetracarboxylic acid nanosheets with a thickness of approximately 1.5 nm and demonstrated their activity as highly efficient hydrogen evolution photocatalysts. The introduction of carboxyl groups increased the internal electric fields, promoting charge-carrier separation, and weakened charge-carrier recombination by migrating photogenerated electrons and holes to the edge and plane, respectively. Furthermore, the reduction potential and hydrophilic sites of perylenetetracarboxylic acid were enhanced. This work provides a strategy for designing future efficient photocatalysts.

Buddhism and M&A performance: Evidence from China

Wen Shi, Xiaogang Bi

Summary: This research examines the impact of Buddhism on mergers & acquisitions (M&As) performance using data from 4622 M&A transactions of Chinese public firms between 2004 and 2018. The findings provide ample evidence that acquirers located in regions with a higher intensity of Buddhism achieve better short-term and long-term performance after the merger. Furthermore, the study reveals that state ownership plays a crucial role in mitigating this effect, and the value creation is driven by higher deal completion rates and fewer violation cases for acquiring firms. Finally, the study addresses the issue of endogeneity, and the results remain unchanged.
