Decision Aids for Decision Making about Locally Advance Breast Cancer: A Systematic Review

Marta Maes-Carballo, Manuel Martin-Diaz, Manuel Garcia-Garcia, Ayla Reinoso-Hermida, Luciano Mignini, Rebeca Patricia Teixeira-Arcaya, Khalid Saeed Khan, Aurora Bueno-Cavanillas

Summary: Locally advanced breast cancer (LABC) is a subtype of breast cancer characterized by regional progression without distant metastasis. Multimodality treatment options, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormonal therapy, and targeted therapy, can significantly improve outcomes for these patients. Decision Aids (DAs) play a crucial role in facilitating individual patient decisions by providing information and support. This systematic review evaluated existing DAs for LABC patients, identified areas for improvement, and highlighted the need for further research and consensus on practical DA development.

Systematic Review Reporting- Writing concisely and precisely

Patrick F. W. Chien, Khalid S. Khan

Summary: Systematic reviews hold the highest rank in the evidence hierarchy. Concise and precise writing are essential in drafting systematic review articles, particularly in the abstract, to capture the key aspects of the research and ensure rapid comprehension. Adhering to the IMRaD structure and using online appendices can help meet word count limits while providing comprehensive details. Novice systematic reviewers can benefit from understanding the rules of effective writing to produce impactful publications in support of evidence-based medicine.

Ferritin screening and Iron treatment for maternal anemia and fetal growth restriction prevention - A multicenter randomized controlled trial (FAIR Study)

Tayyiba Wasim, Natasha Bushra, Arif Tajammul, Shamsa Humayun, Saba Rasool, Fatima Shahbaz, Anam Riaz, Farah Siddique, Khadija Irfan Khawaja, Aziz Fatima, Zubia Zafar, Khalid Saeed Khan

Summary: The study aims to explore the effectiveness of treating non-anemic iron deficiency with iron to improve outcomes for pregnant women and their offspring. A randomized controlled trial will be conducted, recruiting 600 pregnant women with early-stage hemoglobin deficiency but non-anemic. The results of the study will help reduce the rate of pre-delivery anemia in pregnant women, improve birthweight, and prevent perinatal complications.

E-health psychological intervention in pregnant women exposed to intimate partner violence (eIPV): A protocol for a pilot randomised controlled trial

Antonella Ludmila Zapata-Calvente, Stella Martin-de-las-Heras, Aurora Bueno Cavanillas, Karen Andreasen, Vibeke Rasch, Khalid S. Khan

Summary: Intimate partner violence (IPV) during pregnancy is associated with complications for both the mother and the baby. The effectiveness of interventions for IPV in antenatal screening is unclear. This study aims to assess the feasibility of a pilot trial on e-health interventions for mothers exposed to IPV during pregnancy in Spain and Denmark.

Smell Dysfunction in Patients with Primary Sjogren's Syndrome: Impact on Quality of Life

Minan Y. Al-Ezzi, Khalid S. Khan, Anwar R. Tappuni

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of smell hypofunction in patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS), and its impact on quality of life (QoL). The study found that smell hypofunction is a clinical manifestation in pSS patients, but it does not seem to be associated with the severity of mucosal dryness or taste disturbance.

Qualitative study exploring which research outcomes best reflect women's experiences of heavy menstrual bleeding: stakeholder involvement in development of a core outcome set

Natalie Ann MacKinnon Cooper, Sarah Yorke, Alex Tan, Khalid Saeed Khan, Carol Rivas

Summary: This study aimed to develop a core outcome set (COS) for heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB), determining the research outcomes that best reflect its impact on women's lives and identifying previously unreported outcomes. Patient workshop discussions and interviews were conducted to record participants' prioritization of outcomes. The study identified various important themes related to HMB and proposed new outcomes for potential inclusion in the COS. The findings highlight the significant impact of HMB on women's lives and the societal and economic costs associated with this condition.

Patient and public involvement in lifestyle randomized controlled trials: a systematic review

Amira Bouzalmate-Hajjaj, Naomi Cano-Ibanez, Khalid Saeed Khan, Aurora Bueno-Cavanillas, Paloma Masso Guijarro

Summary: This systematic review aimed to identify the extent of patient and public involvement (PPI) reported in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of lifestyle interventions and its impact on enrolment and retention rates. The findings suggest that PPI can improve the retention of participants in RCTs with lifestyle interventions, but its impact on enrolment rates is unclear. Overall, PPI should be encouraged in the RCT research process.

Persistent organic pollutant exposure as a risk factor of gestational diabetes mellitus: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Malak Kouiti, Maria Angeles Castillo-Hermoso, Ibtissam Youlyouz-Marfak, Khalid Saeed Khan, Shakila Thangaratinam, Rocio Olmedo-Requena, Javier Zamora, Jose Juan Jimenez-Moleon

Summary: The association between persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) remains inconclusive. This systematic review with meta-analysis found small mean differences between GDM cases and controls for certain POPs. However, the quality of evidence was mostly moderate and the results were heterogeneous, indicating a need for improved research methodology to assess the risk of POPs and GDM.
