Summary: This study examined factors associated with health indicators using data from over 500,000 participants in the UK Biobank. It found that factors such as low income, male gender, neighborhood deprivation, loneliness, social isolation, sleep duration, BMI, and smoking were associated with poor health, while walking, vigorous physical activity, and more frequent alcohol intake were associated with good health. Additionally, there was some evidence of a link between airborne pollutants and noise with poor health outcomes.

Summary: There has been a significant increase in cholera cases and deaths globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. At the same time, plastic pollution is also on the rise in these countries, which has become a major component of urban dump sites. This study found that plastic surfaces can serve as reservoirs for toxigenic Vibrio cholerae, and subsequent transfer to floodwaters can lead to the wider dissemination of cholera. Understanding the interaction between diseases and plastic waste is crucial for combating infection, educating communities, and reducing the public health risk of plastics in the environment.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the associations between socioeconomic status and asthma exacerbation and hospital utilization factors among children with asthma in Korea. The study found that children with lower socioeconomic status were more likely to experience asthma exacerbation, hospital admission, and receive treatment for severe asthma symptoms compared to those with higher socioeconomic status.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the proportion and number of incident cancer cases in Switzerland between 2015 and 2019 that were attributable to modifiable lifestyle risk factors. The results showed that 25.2% of potentially preventable cancer cases in Switzerland during this period were linked to these risk factors. The proportion and numbers were slightly larger in males than in females, and variations were observed between language regions. Tobacco smoking, excess body weight, and high alcohol consumption were the leading contributors to lifestyle-attributable cancer cases. The observed differences in leading risk factors within Switzerland and compared to other countries emphasize the need for regionally and nationally tailored cancer prevention and education strategies.

Summary: Research shows that there is a complex relationship between dietary patterns and depressive symptoms, involving various biological and psychosocial mechanisms. Socioeconomic status is believed to be related to the occurrence of depressive symptoms, with those of lower status being more likely to experience persistent depression. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between socioeconomic and health factors and dietary assessment, as well as the relationship between dietary assessment and depressive symptoms.

Summary: SPART is a gene that encodes a multifunctional protein, spartin, which is found in various organelles of human cells. Mutations in this gene can cause a hereditary form of spastic paraplegia called Troyer syndrome, while epigenetic silencing has been observed in certain types of tumors. The gene's main functions include endosomal trafficking and receptor degradation, microtubule interaction, cytokinesis, fatty acid metabolism, and oxidative metabolism. Recent research has shown that spartin is downregulated in tumor tissues compared to adjacent normal samples. This finding provides intriguing evidence for further investigation into the role of this protein in cancer development and metabolism.

Summary: This study explores the public's openness towards dementia risk reduction and willingness towards changing lifestyle behavior to reduce future dementia risk. The results indicate that many individuals have difficulty understanding the concept of dementia risk reduction and hold ambivalent attitudes towards behavior change. Support is needed for individuals who face barriers such as negative self-image, engaging in multiple unhealthy behaviors, and holding unrealistic perceptions about lifestyle change.

Summary: The study found an association between a low healthy lifestyle score and poor quality of life, in both general and health-related aspects. Female gender, older age, and depression had a more negative impact on HRQOL, while male gender and younger age had a more negative impact on QOL. Changes in physical activity, drinking, and smoking status were significantly associated with lower HRQOL and QOL.

Summary: The EquiPrEP Project aims to optimize the rollout of long-acting injectable HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (LAI-PrEP) in an urban safety-net clinic in New York City through an equity-oriented implementation science framework. The project seeks to increase overall LAI-PrEP initiation, improve uptake among groups disproportionately impacted by the HIV epidemic, maintain high PrEP retention while expanding use, and identify barriers and facilitators to LAI-PrEP use.
