Claisen-Schmidt condensation reaction of 4-acetamidoacetophenone with aromatic aldehydes under ultrasonic irradiation affords acetylaminochalcones (yields: 71-90%) which also under ultrasonic irradiation and in the presence of sodium acetate and acetic acid aqueous undergo facile and clean cyclocondensation with hydrazine to afford 3-(4-acetamidophenyl)-5-(aryl)-1-H-pyrazolines. The pyrazolines were obtained in good to excellent yields (81-89%), and were characterized by conventional spectral data. The work-up is simple and the results obtained indicate that, unlike classical heating, ultrasonic irradiation results in higher yields, shorter reaction times (1.5-2.3 h) and milder conditions. Microwave-assisted synthesis, biological assessment, and molecular modeling of aza-heterocycles: Potential inhibitory capacity of cholinergic enzymes to Alzheimer's disease

Efrain Polo, Luis Prent-Penaloza, Yeray A. Rodriguez Nunez, Lady Valdes-Salas, Jorge Trilleras, Juan Ramos, Jose A. Henao, Antonio Galdamez, Alejandro Morales-Bayuelo, Margarita Gutierrez

Summary: The study describes a highly regioselective method for synthesizing pyrazoles and tetrahydroindazoles through condensation reactions, with potential therapeutic implications for Alzheimer's disease as well as antioxidant and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory properties. Molecular docking studies showed key interactions with the butyrylcholinesterase active site, and various reactivity descriptors were calculated to analyze the reactivity patterns of the compounds.

Three-component one-pot synthesis of new spiro[indoline-pyrrolidine] derivatives mediated by 1,3-dipolar reaction and DFT analysis

Yazmin Villarreal, Braulio Insuasty, Rodrigo Abonia, Alejandro Ortiz, Pablo Romo, Jairo Quiroga

Summary: The method involves a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between azomethine ylides generated in situ from the condensation of isatins with sarcosine and trans-1,2-dibenzoylethylene. It provides mild reaction conditions with high regioselectivity and stereoselectivity, allowing for the assembly of a complex structural entity in a single step.

Synthesis, characterization, crystal and molecular structure and theoretical study of N-(naphthalen-1-yl)-2-(piperidin-1-yl) acetamide, a selective butyrylcholinesterase inhibitor

Lorena Camargo-Ayala, Luis Prent-Penaloza, Efrain Polo-Cuadrado, Brito Ivan, Jonathan Cisterna, Edison Osorio, Wendy Gonzalez, Margarita Gutierrez

Summary: This study presented the crystalline and molecular structure of N-(naphthalen-1-yl)-2-(piperidin-1-yl) acetamide for the first time, and experimental characterization was conducted using various techniques. Interestingly, acetamide exhibited a unique solid-state structure and showed significant selectivity for butyrylcholinesterase and acetylcholinesterase inhibition activities. Additionally, molecular coupling analysis indicated a more stable complex formation between compound 5 and butyricholinesterase compared to acetylcholinesterase.

Jorge Trilleras, Jairo Quiroga, Angelina Hormaza

Summary: The synthesis and structural diversification of N-heterocycles systems using conventional Claisen-Schmidt condensation reactions and [2+3] cycloaddition reactions have been conducted. This protocol offers a new approach for the synthesis of 3-(substituted aroyl)-4-heteroaryl pyrrole derivatives.

SNAr Reactions on 2-Amino-4,6-dichloropyrimidine-5-carb aldehyde

Jorge Trilleras, Alfredo Perez-Gamboa, Jairo Quiroga

Summary: We report the unexpected aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction products on 2-amino-4,6-dichloropyrimidine-5-carbaldehyde under mild and environmentally friendly conditions, due to the influence of structural factors of the starting pyrimidine and a high concentration of alkoxide ions. This method allows the synthesis of pyrimidine-based compound precursors of N-heterocyclic systems.

Characterization of Microplastics in Total Atmospheric Deposition Sampling from Areas Surrounding Industrial Complexes in Northwestern Colombia

Joaquin Hernandez-Fernandez, Esneyder Puello-Polo, Jorge Trilleras

Summary: This study evaluates the total atmospheric deposition of microplastics near an industrial complex in Cartagena, Colombia. Samples were taken at different distances from the industrial zone and treated to identify and quantify the types of plastic present. The results showed that the presence of microplastics was influenced by wind and rainfall, with plastic fragments being the most affected.

Microplastics' and Nanoplastics' Interactions with Microorganisms: A Bibliometric Study

Carlos David Grande-Tovar, Domingo Cesar Carrascal-Hernandez, Jorge Trilleras, Katelediana Mora, Victoria A. Arana

Summary: Microplastics and nanoplastics have negative impacts on the environment and human health, and their interactions with microorganisms have various effects. More research is needed on biodegradable alternatives. China, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany lead the scientific production in this field, but large-scale pilot studies in the environment are lacking. Increased research funding from governments and collaboration among universities, institutes, and industries are required to find alternative pathways for MP/NP degradation and standardize extraction and characterization methods.

Multicomponent synthesis and photophysical study of novel alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl depsipeptides and peptoids

Ricelia Gonzalez, Juliana Murillo-Lopez, Walter Rabanal-Leon, Luis Prent-Penaloza, Odette Concepcion, Pedro Olivares, Yorley Duarte, Alexander F. de la Torre, Margarita Gutierrez, Julio Caballero

Summary: Novel alpha, beta-unsaturated carbonyl depsipeptides and peptoids incorporating various chromophores were synthesized using multicomponent reactions. UV/Vis spectroscopy was used to study the photophysical properties of the compounds, and the differences in electron delocalization caused by different chromophores were captured in the spectra. A photostability study for one compound showed that its molecular structure remained unchanged after exposure to UV radiation. Fluorescence analysis revealed incipient emission and blue fluorescence for specific compounds under UV radiation. The photophysical properties and electronic structure were also studied theoretically.

Microplastics Occurrence in Fish from Tocagua Lake, Low Basin Magdalena River, Colombia

Lindys Miranda-Pena, Milena Urquijo, Victoria A. Arana, Roberto Garcia-Alzate, Carlos A. Garcia-Alzate, Jorge Trilleras

Summary: This study provides scientific data on the presence and abundance of microplastics in water and fish from Tocagua Lake, a wetland in the Colombian Caribbean. The average concentration of microplastics in the lake water was 0.96 ± 0.40 MPs/L, and microplastics were found in the gastrointestinal tract of 83.7% of the fish. Black and blue-colored fiber microplastics were the dominant particles, and seven types of polymers were identified. The abundance, type, and color of microplastics did not differ significantly between seasons.
