This research aimed to evaluate the effects of partial or total replacement of fish oil (FO) with unrefined peanut oil (PO) on growth and some physiological parameters of Mozambique tilapia juveniles for 60 days. Three triplicate groups (initial weight 6.36 +/- 0.19 g) were fed with isoenergetic and isonitrogenous diets in which FO was replaced with PO in graded increments of 50% (PO0, PO50, PO100). The results showed that weight gain and feed efficiency of fish fed with PO50 diet were statistically higher than in the other two groups (P<0.05). No significant effects were observed on whole body proximate composition of fish fed with the experimental diets (P>0.05). The partial or total replacement of FO with PO did not affect on the hematological and immunological parameters of fish. Serum glucose, total cholesterol and triglyceride were lower in fish fed with PO50 diet (P<0.05). The present study revealed that PO can be used as an alternate source of dietary lipid up to 50% in tilapia feeds without adverse effects on growth performance, hemato-immunological and serum biochemical parameters

Summary: Petrochemical industries and oil refineries are major sources of hazardous chemicals in aquatic environments, causing adverse effects on biota. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the BioFilm-Membrane Bioreactor (BF-MBR) in reducing chemical pollutants and toxicity in mussels exposed to oil-polluted wastewater. The results showed that BF-MBR significantly reduced pollutant load and protected the health of mussels.

Summary: This study examined the levels of cadmium, lead, mercury, and total lipids in wild and farmed fish samples from the south Mediterranean. The results showed no significant differences in the levels of lead, cadmium, and mercury between the two groups of fish. However, the farmed fish samples had slightly higher total lipids content. This study also reported the presence of toxic metals in farmed Umbrina cirrosa, with undetectable values of mercury, cadmium, and lead.

Summary: Pharmaceuticals discharged from urban and hospital sources pose a continuous threat to aquatic environments and their biota. While the impact of single compounds has been extensively investigated, little is known about their effects as mixtures. This study assessed the biological impact of caffeine alone and in combination with salicylic acid on mussel gills, revealing lipid peroxidation and cholinergic neurotoxicity, which were not counteracted by the antioxidant system.

Summary: Fish are a significant source of protein and nutrients, but they may also contain harmful substances like heavy metals. This study aimed to evaluate the concentrations of heavy metals in different muscles of two commercial fish species from the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. The results showed that concentrations of mercury, lead, and cadmium exceeded EU regulations for fish, indicating heavy metal pollution in the sampled region. Continued monitoring and evaluation of pollution levels in the Caspian Sea will be necessary.

Summary: This study investigated the intra-decadal dynamics and spatial distribution of ichthyoplankton abundance in Sevastopol Bay, focusing on the influence of hydrometeorological factors. The results revealed that temperature and certain wind patterns had a positive effect on the number of ichthyoplankton during the summer spawning period. The distribution of ichthyoplankton was also influenced by pollution patterns and wind characteristics.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the potential use of poppy seed oil as a main lipid source in common carp diets. Five different experimental diets with various proportions of fish oil and poppy seed oil were provided to common carp for 90 days. The results showed that feeding carp with diets consisting completely of poppy seed oil resulted in significantly greater growth and feed utilization performance, without negative effects on hematological or liver pathology.

Summary: The accumulation and persistence of chemical pesticides in aquatic environments pose a growing threat to animals and humans. Monitoring key-fish species is a valuable approach to studying the ecotoxicology of marine ecosystems. This study evaluated the presence of pesticides in the Milazzo gulf and Marinello nature reserve in Sicily and focused on assessing the enzymatic activities of acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase as biomarkers in Coris julis fish species. The findings revealed the presence of insecticides in the marine waters, which pose risks to animal and human health due to activities such as swimming and fishing in nearby areas. This study highlights the importance of using biomarkers to monitor and assess the ecological impacts of ecotoxicological alterations in aquatic ecosystems.
