Summary: Off-road engines are a significant source of emissions in the United States. The study evaluates the feasibility and effectiveness of using aftertreatment systems on small off-road diesel engines under 75 hp. Results show that retrofitting engines with diesel particulate filters can achieve over 98% reduction in particulate matter emissions, and selective catalytic reduction systems can reduce nitrogen oxides emissions by 26-91%. Implementing more stringent standards for these engines could lead to significant emissions reductions in California's off-road equipment inventory.

Summary: Modal emission models describe vehicular emissions under specific vehicle kinetic conditions or engine parameters. A new approach using a Greedy algorithm to define optimal mode boundaries and improve model robustness has been proposed. The model calibrated with emission data from a portable emission monitoring system can effectively reflect CO2 emissions in different driving conditions, with engine parameters found to improve model prediction for CO and NOx by about 30%.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of the microstructure of summer sea ice on its optical properties. Gas bubbles are found to be the main scatterers within sea ice and have a much stronger effect on scattering coefficient and ice albedo compared to brine pockets. Additionally, higher concentration and larger size of particulate matter particles lead to decreased ice albedo and transmittance. The microstructure of ice plays a more significant role in radiation transfer partitioning in seasonal ice compared to multiyear ice, and in ponded ice compared to snow-covered ice.

Summary: Illegal manipulation of vehicles leads to significant increase in emissions, particularly in terms of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particle numbers. Tampering with the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and NOx sensor can cause emissions to exceed regulations and reach old or even pre-Euro levels.

Summary: This paper investigates the black carbon (BC) emissions from on-road transportation in China and establishes an updated inventory. The research shows that comprehensive control policies in the past have significantly reduced BC emissions, and there is still great potential for further reduction in the future through stringent control policies and advanced technologies. Various scenarios suggest substantial BC emission reductions can be achieved in the future.

Summary: According to the latest Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) report, the Arctic has warmed three times faster than the global average and faster than previously thought. Due to limited observations, a research aerosol station has been established on Bely Island in western Siberia to study the Siberian Arctic. The study found that black carbon and other pollutants exhibit apparent seasonal variation in the Arctic, with emissions from burning natural gas being the main contributing source. Emissions from Europe and Asia also have an impact on the pollution in the Arctic.

Summary: Fuel-based NOx emission inventories for California and the US over the period 1990-2020 showed a 70% decline in total on-road NOx emissions, with California leading the reduction by 48% compared to the national decrease. Further efforts have been taken in California to introduce new heavy-duty engines equipped with selective catalytic reduction systems, contributing to the steeper decrease in diesel NOx emissions in the state.

Summary: Recent satellite observations indicate that the Arctic is absorbing more solar radiation due to declining sea ice and snow covers. Clouds play a significant role in influencing solar absorption and trends in the Arctic, with a stronger effect observed over oceans.

Summary: The study found that the emission cheating scandal by Volkswagen Group in 2015 resulted in the costliest violation of U.S. environmental regulations in history. Post-recall repairs led to a significant reduction in fuel specific NOx emissions for vehicles, even surpassing the emission levels of some in-use vehicles.

Summary: This study investigates the variation in driving style and emissions based on traffic conditions, route features, and route familiarity. It finds that driving behavior, traffic conditions, route familiarity, and route features all contribute to emissions. Aggressive driving and certain route features lead to higher emissions, and there are emission hotspots associated with specific route characteristics.

Summary: This study analyzed the emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ammonia (NH3) from five different goods movement vehicles. The results showed that diesel vehicles with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) had lower NOx emissions, while natural gas vehicles equipped with three-way catalysts (TWCs) had higher NH3 emissions.

Summary: The increasing production and population of motor vehicles in China have worsened air pollution, with a focus needed on targeted control measures. Research shows that emissions from medium-duty diesel vehicles are significantly higher than those from light-duty gasoline vehicles, requiring emphasis on controlling diesel vehicle emissions. The effects of speed and acceleration on emissions are nonlinear, varying between vehicle types in mountainous regions.

Summary: This study investigates the emissions and potential health effects of using hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) and HVO blended with biodiesel as fuels for a legacy off-road diesel engine. The results show that HVO significantly reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions compared to diesel, while biodiesel blends increase NOx emissions. Both pure HVO and biodiesel blends show reductions in particulate matter (PM) and solid particle numbers. Additionally, the use of biofuels decreases oxidative stress and cytotoxicity in PM emissions.

Summary: The study demonstrates that adding di-ethyl ether (DEE) to tractor diesel engines can improve combustion efficiency and reduce emissions, with a maximum substitution rate of 45% diesel. DEE-diesel blends exhibit longer combustion duration at high loads and better performance at low to medium loads.
