Summary: Ankle plantar flexor (PF) muscle strength is moderately associated with dynamic reactive and proactive balance in older adults, weakly associated with static balance and walking speed. In younger adults, there is a moderate association between early-phase PF rate of torque development and reactive balance. This highlights the potential role of PF strength in dynamic balance tasks.

Summary: This study analyzed the plasma proteomic profile associated with age-related decline in physical function and identified several novel protein markers and pathways that may play a role in this process. These findings provide important insights for understanding and potentially targeting age-related functional decline.

Summary: The study found a higher correlation of the NPM index with muscle mass-related indices compared to the PM index, and it had stronger predictive value for SGA score, ASM/Ht(2), HGS, and GS. The NPM index may be an early and useful indicator for detecting muscle strength and physical performance among HD patients.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of testosterone therapy on musculoskeletal health and clinical outcomes in men. The study found that testosterone therapy can increase hip bone density and total lean mass in men within 6 months, but its effects on lumbar spine bone density and handgrip strength are unclear. More research is needed to further understand the safety and efficacy of testosterone on musculoskeletal health and clinical outcomes.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the relationship between indices of sarcopenic obesity (SO) and bone strength in older adults with obesity. The findings suggest that lower muscle mass and strength and higher fat mass may impair bone quality.

Summary: Aging is associated with decreased muscle strength and increased reactive oxygen species. This cross-sectional study found that serum levels of alpha-carotene were positively associated with muscle strength in older adults, while other antioxidants were not. This suggests that alpha-carotene may have a beneficial effect on muscle strength in aging individuals.

Summary: This study evaluated the association of phase angle (PA) with clinical and nutritional aspects in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) treated in an outpatient clinic. The results showed that most individuals had reduced PA, and only age was associated with this result.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between maternal testosterone concentrations in the third trimester and offspring handgrip strength (HGS) at the age of 5. The results showed that higher concentrations of free testosterone in the third trimester were associated with lower HGS in 5-year-old children, suggesting a negative effect of maternal testosterone on offspring muscle strength.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between blood and urine cadmium levels and muscle strength. The study found that there was a linear dose-response relationship between cadmium concentrations in blood and urine and muscle strength, with lower levels of cadmium associated with decreased muscle strength. This association was more evident among male participants.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between blood and urine cadmium levels and muscle strength, finding a dose-response relationship between cadmium concentrations and decreased muscle strength, particularly in men. Further longitudinal investigations are needed to fully understand this issue.

Summary: Mounting evidence suggests that abnormal gait speed is a predictor of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease. This study aimed to explore the relationship between white matter integrity, specifically myelination, and motor function. The results showed that participants with higher rapid gait speeds had higher myelin content in various white matter brain regions, indicating a positive association between gait speed and myelination. However, usual gait speed did not show any significant associations with myelin content, suggesting that rapid gait speed may be a more sensitive marker of demyelination.

Summary: This study compared the protein expression profiles between older adults with preserved and low muscle strength, and found differences in catabolic, mitochondrial, stress-related, and myogenic pathways. The increased stress factors in the low muscle strength group may reflect the deterioration of tissue homeostasis, while the upregulation of myogenic markers in this group may be an attempt to compensate for the gradual loss in muscle quantity and quality.
