This life cycle assessment case study puts the supply chain contribution of transportation to greenhouse gas emissions in context with other contributors using American wheat grain as a representative product. Multiple locations, species and routes to market are investigated. Transportation contributes 39-56% of the supply chain emissions, whereas there is a 101% intra-species and 62% inter-species variation in greenhouse gas emissions from production, demonstrating that transportation is both of smaller magnitude, and less sensitive than other factors, in particular, field sequestration. Testing Curbside Management Strategies to Mitigate the Impacts of Ridesourcing Services on Traffic

Andisheh Ranjbari, Jose Luis Machado-Leon, Giacomo Dalla Chiara, Don MacKenzie, Anne Goodchild

Summary: This research evaluates two strategies in Seattle to reduce pick-up and drop-off activity in travel lanes and improve customer satisfaction by changing curb allocation and implementing geofencing. The results show that these strategies can reduce curb-side congestion and increase compliance, but had no significant impact on travel speeds and traffic safety.

Empirical analysis of commercial vehicle dwell times around freight-attracting urban buildings in downtown Seattle

Haena Kim, Anne Goodchild, Linda Ng Boyle

Summary: Dwell time, defined as the time delivery workers spend performing out-of-vehicle activities while their vehicle is parked, is correlated with factors such as building services, delivered goods, and vehicle types. Data collected from commercial buildings in downtown Seattle can potentially improve parking policies for commercial vehicles.

Understanding Urban Commercial Vehicle Driver Behaviors and Decision Making

Giacomo Dalla Chiara, Klaas Fiete Krutein, Andisheh Ranjbari, Anne Goodchild

Summary: This study collected data on commercial vehicle driver behaviors through ridealongs with various logistics carriers and found that urban CVs spent a significant amount of their operating time parked, mainly in authorized parking locations. Dwell times were longer for mail and heavy goods deliveries, and drivers' criteria for choosing parking locations included avoiding unsafe maneuvers and competition with other commercial drivers.

Evaluating Traffic Impacts of Permitting Trucks in Transit-Only Lanes

Summary: The research demonstrated that implementing a lane management strategy for freight and transit vehicles in an urban environment can have positive operational impacts, guiding future project development. Trucks and buses use the FAT lane at complementary times without affecting each other's choice of lane. Unauthorized vehicles, such as passenger cars and work vans, begin to use the FAT lane more during congestion.

Curbspace Management Challenges and Opportunities from Public and Private Sector Perspectives

Caleb Diehl, Andisheh Ranjbari, Anne Goodchild

Summary: The study reveals that enforcement, communication, data collection and management, and interagency coordination are top curb management concerns among public officials. Successful policies include allocating zones for passenger pick-ups and drop-offs, incentives for off-peak delivery, and requiring data sharing for additional curb spaces. Both public and private sector staff expressed a desire for citywide policy goals, consistent curb regulations, and a common data standard for encoding curb information.

Defining Urban Freight Microhubs: A Case Study Analysis

Konstantina Katsela, Seyma Gunes, Travis Fried, Anne Goodchild, Michael Browne

Summary: Urban freight distribution faces multiple challenges, and the success or failure of Urban Consolidation Centers (UCCs) does not determine the viability of microhubs. Limited knowledge exists regarding the advantages and disadvantages of microhubs, necessitating further exploration. This research combines 17 empirical cases to develop a framework for classifying different microhub typologies and establishes a common language for understanding these classifications. Microhubs are proposed as a significant opportunity to enhance urban freight sustainability and efficiency, addressing the challenges of multi-sector collaboration.
