Bovine papillomaviruses (BPVs) are small DNA tumoral viruses able to induce benign cutaneous and/or mucosal epithelial lesions. Generally, the benign tumours affecting the skin or mucosa spontaneously regress, but under special circumstances, the defence system may be overwhelmed, thus leading to cancer, especially in the presence of immunosuppressant and mutagen agents from bracken fern. To date, thirteen different BPV genotypes have been associated with skin and mucosal tumours in cattle, and out of these, only four types (BPV-1, -2, -5 and -13) cross-infect other species. Recent investigations in vivo have revealed new insights into the epidemiology and pathogenesis of this viral infection. This review briefly discusses viral epidemiology, will give data on BPV genome structure and viral genes and will describe the cellular events and new aspects of both cutaneous and mucosal tumours in large ruminants. Finally, some aspects of active immunization will be described.

The Small Molecule BIBR1532 Exerts Potential Anti-cancer Activities in Preclinical Models of Feline Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Through Inhibition of Telomerase Activity and Down-Regulation of TERT

Gennaro Altamura, Barbara degli Uberti, Giorgio Galiero, Giovanna De Luca, Karen Power, Luca Licenziato, Paola Maiolino, Giuseppe Borzacchiello

Summary: BIBR1532 shows multiple anti-cancer activities in feline oral squamous cell carcinoma by inhibiting telomerase pathway and interfering with signaling routes involved in cell proliferation, cell survival, and invasion, paving the way for future translational studies.

Summary: Equine sarcoids, caused by bovine papillomaviruses, exhibit an alteration of the autophagic process, leading to the survival of a specific population of fibroblasts that produce more and/or altered collagen in a hypoxic microenvironment.

Anti-EGFR monoclonal antibody Cetuximab displays potential anti-cancer activities in feline oral squamous cell carcinoma cell lines

Gennaro Altamura, Giuseppe Borzacchiello

Summary: The study aims to assess the efficacy of Cetuximab in FOSCC and found that Cetuximab can inhibit the activation of EGFR, reduce cell proliferation and cell viability, and induce cell apoptosis. These results suggest potential anti-cancer activities of Cetuximab in the therapy of FOSCC.

Expression of collagenases (matrix metalloproteinase-1,-8,-13) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-3 (TIMP-3) in naturally occurring bovine cutaneous fibropapillomas

Florentina Daraban Bocaneti, Gennaro Altamura, Annunziata Corteggio, Oana Irina Tanase, Mihaela Anca Dascalu, Sorin Aurelian Pasca, Ozana Hritcu, Mihai Mares, Giuseppe Borzacchiello

Summary: This study investigated the expression of MMP-1/-8/-13 and TIMP-3 in bovine cutaneous fibropapillomas. The results showed that MMP-8/-13 were overexpressed while MMP-1 was down-regulated in the tumors compared to normal skin samples, along with a decrease in TIMP-3 levels. These findings suggest that an imbalance between MMPs/TIMPs may contribute to increased collagenolytic activity and play a role in ECM changes and tumor development.

Florentina Daraban Bocaneti, Larisa Maria Ivanescu, Liviu Miron, Oana Irina Tanase, Mihaela Anca Dascalu

Summary: Leishmaniasis, traditionally considered a nonendemic disease in Romania, has seen an increase in prevalence due to climate change creating optimal conditions for vector spread. Importation of the disease through travel of humans and dogs has made it a medical concern in the country.

Monoclonal antibody cetuximab impairs matrix metalloproteinases 2 and 9, epithelial-mesenchymal transition and cell migration in feline oral squamous cell carcinoma in vitro

Gennaro Altamura, Manuela Martano, Anna Matrone, Annunziata Corteggio, Giuseppe Borzacchiello

Summary: Feline oral squamous cell carcinoma (FOSCC) is difficult to treat and new therapeutic strategies are needed. This study found that cetuximab, an anti-epidermal growth factor receptor monoclonal antibody, has inhibitory effects on invasion and metastasis in FOSCC by affecting MMPs and epithelial-mesenchymal transition pathways, potentially improving the management of the disease.

Investigation of multiple Felis catus papillomavirus types (-1/-2/-3/-4/-5/-6) DNAs in feline oral squamous cell carcinoma: a multicentric study

Gennaro Altamura, Bianca Cuccaro, Claudia Eleni, Carina Strohmayer, Sabine Brandt, Giuseppe Borzacchiello

Summary: Recent evidence suggests a potential association of Felis catus papillomavirus type 2 (FcaPV-2) DNA with feline oral squamous cell carcinoma (FOSCC). This study detected viral DNA in a significant number of FOSCC samples collected in Italy and Austria using type-specific PCR targeting different genes of FcaPV-1/-2/-3/-4/-5/-6. The results confirmed the high prevalence of FcaPV-2 in FOSCC and highlighted potential differences in the circulation rates of FcaPVs among European countries.
