Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is a fluorinated compound and a Persistent Organic Pollutant which can disrupt the endocrine system. This work was undertaken to evaluate the possible effects of PFOS exposure on the regulation of corticosterone secretion in adrenal and pituitary glands and at hypothalamic level in adult male rat, and to evaluate the possible morphological alterations induced by PFOS in this endocrine tissue. Adult male rats were orally treated with 0.5, 1.0, 3.0 and 6.0 mg of PFOS/kg/day for 28 days. Corticosterone, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) secretion decreased in PFOS-treated rats. After PFOS exposure, relative expression of adrenocorticotropic hormone receptor (ACTHr) and proopiomelanocortin (POMC) genes was increased in adrenal and in pituitary glands, respectively; while relative expression of ACTHr and CRH genes decreased in hypothalamus with the doses of 0.5 and 1.0 mg/kg/day. PFOS treatment increased relative nitric oxide synthase 1 and 2 (NOS1 and NOS2) gene expression in the adrenal gland, and incremented superoxide dismutase activity. PFOS exposure induces a global inhibition of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity, and small morphological changes were observed in adrenal zona fasciculata cells. Evaluation of toxic effects induced by repeated exposure to Cylindrospermopsin in rats using a 28-day feeding study

Summary: The 28-day repeated dose oral study on rats with Cylindrospermopsin (CYN) showed mild toxic effects with no toxicity relevance in male rats, while slight changes in biochemical parameters and organ weights were observed in female rats without toxicological significance. This suggests the need for longer oral toxicity studies to define the potential consequences of long-term CYN exposure.

Immunohistochemical expression of aromatase cyp19a1a and cyp19a1b in the ovary and brain of zebrafish (Danio rerio) exposed to different concentrations of bisphenol A

Summary: This study evaluated the expression of cyp19a aromatase in zebrafish after exposure to different concentrations of BPA, finding that these aromatases are overexpressed and could be good biomarkers for identifying early effects of low BPA concentrations. The study is the first to localize and quantify the expression of cyp19a1a and cyp19a1b in the cells of brain and ovary after fish exposure to BPA.

Summary: The study suggests that short-term exposure to low concentrations of BPA can have effects on ovarian follicular development in zebrafish at both histopathological and proteomic levels. Even inadvertent exposure to small amounts of BPA could lead to alterations in essential biological processes.

Gal3 Plays a Deleterious Role in a Mouse Model of Endotoxemia

Juan Carlos Fernandez-Martin, Ana Maria Espinosa-Oliva, Irene Garcia-Dominguez, Isaac Rosado-Sanchez, Yolanda M. Pacheco, Rosario Moyano, Jose G. Monterde, Jose Luis Venero, Rocio M. de Pablos

Summary: This study investigates the role of galectin-3 (Gal3) in the development of endotoxemia and sepsis. The absence of Gal3 reduces mortality and tissue damage in a murine model of endotoxemia. Gal3 levels decrease in immune cells, particularly monocytes, after LPS injection, and Gal3 is up-regulated in peripheral organs. These findings suggest that Gal3 plays a significant role in systemic inflammation and may provide potential therapeutic options for sepsis.

Summary: This study assessed the toxic effects of BPA on reproduction and embryonic development in zebrafish. The results showed that embryos from fish exposed to BPA exhibited signs of embryotoxicity, and histopathological alterations were observed in the reproductive organs of the exposed fish. These findings suggest that BPA has a significant impact on fertility and viability of offspring.

Analysis of Indirect Biomarkers of Effect after Exposure to Low Doses of Bisphenol A in a Study of Successive Generations of Mice

Summary: Bisphenol A (BPA) is a common environmental and food pollutant that both animals and humans are exposed to. By analyzing blood biochemistry and reproductive parameters, this study found that changes in glucose, total proteins, and albumin could potentially serve as early indicators of health issues caused by prolonged exposure to low doses of BPA.

Summary: Claviceps paspali is a fungus that parasitises Paspalum dilatatum, causing tremorgenic syndrome in cattle. This study describes a clinical case in a cattle farm in Seville, where the diagnosis was based on clinical inspection and identification of the fungus in paspalum seed heads. No effective treatment is currently available, but supportive treatment and different handling methods led to complete recovery of the animals.

Comparative study of tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222) and eugenol as euthanasia agents in zebrafish (Danio rerio) as an experimental model

Summary: In animal experiments, measures should be taken to minimize pain and suffering while obtaining accurate experimental results. This study compares the efficacy of eugenol and MS-222 as euthanasia agents in zebrafish and evaluates their effects. Eugenol is found to be a stronger euthanasia agent, but it also causes branchial alterations and nerve tissue changes. MS-222 with a buffer enhances effectiveness and reduces severity of lesions, making it the most effective and safest euthanasia method for zebrafish research.

Effects of chronic low-dose aflatoxin B1 exposure in lactating Florida dairy goats

Summary: In recent years, there has been a growing concern about milk pollution by aflatoxin M1 due to the increasing prevalence of aflatoxins in animal feeding and dairy product consumption. A study was conducted to determine the transfer of aflatoxin B1 into milk and its effects on production and serological parameters in goats. Goats were exposed to different doses of aflatoxin B1 for 31 days and the concentration of aflatoxin M1 in milk was found to significantly increase with the amount of aflatoxin B1 ingested. However, the ingested amount did not affect the aflatoxin M1 carryover, indicating a certain resistance of goats to the effects of aflatoxin B1.

Analysis of Blood Biochemistry and Pituitary-Gonadal Histology after Chronic Exposure to Bisphenol-A of Mice

Ana M. Molina-Lopez, Francisca Bujalance-Reyes, Maria Teresa Urbano, Antonio Lora-Benitez, Nahum Ayala-Soldado, Rosario Moyano-Salvago

Summary: This study examined the effects of chronic exposure to different doses of BPA on blood biochemistry and tissue histology in mice. The results showed that low doses of BPA could inhibit hepatic gluconeogenesis, leading to hypoglycemia, and induce lipid synthesis, resulting in increased levels of blood lipids and cholesterol. Additionally, it was found that continuous exposure to BPA could potentially cause hepatic and renal dysfunction, indicated by alterations in blood biochemical parameters. However, no histological changes were observed in the pituitary and gonads.
