Here, we report for the first time the polymorphisms of MICA and MICB in a healthy Li population of 344 unrelated individuals. By using polymerase chain reaction-sequence specific priming (PCR-SSP) and sequence-based typing (PCR-SBT), 17 MICA-sequence alleles and 5 MICA-STR (short tandem repeats, STR) alleles, as well as 17 MICB alleles were detected, among which MICA*010, MICA*A4 and MICB*005:02 were the most frequent alleles. In addition, linkage disequilibrium was investigated and the most common two-locus haplotypes were MICB*005:02-MICA*010 and MICB*008-MICA*002:01. These results present informative genetic markers for the investigation of possible origins and the evolution of MHC class I haplotypes in the Li population.

Equivalence of two least-squares estimators for indirect effects

WenWu Wang, Ping Yu, Yuejin Zhou, Tiejun Tong, Zhonghua Liu

Summary: In this paper, the authors focused on the mediation test based on the indirect effect in social and behavioral sciences. They examined the difference method and the product method in mediation models and demonstrated their equivalence in various scenarios. The authors also provided insights on the empirical distributions of indirect effect estimators and introduced popular R packages for mediation analysis.

YAP1 induces marrow derived suppressor cell recruitment in Chlamydia trachomatis infection

Xiaofang Lu, Yong Wang, Ying Ma, Dong Huang, Yuying Lu, Xiang Liu, Ruijia Zhou, Ping Yu, Lei Zhang, Jianlin Chen, Rong Lu, Fuyan Wang

Summary: This study reveals the involvement of MDSCs in the immune escape mechanism of C. trachomatis mediated by YAP1. The proportion of MDSCs increases, while the proportion of CD4+T and CD8+T cells decreases after C. trachomatis infection. The upregulation of Arg-1 and iNOS in MDSCs, as well as YAP1 in host cells, is observed. Inhibition of YAP1 leads to the inhibition of C. trachomatis growth.

Finding the optimal multilayer network structure through reinforcement learning in fault diagnosis

Jie Cao, Jialin Ma, Dailin Huang, Ping Yu

Summary: In this paper, a neural architecture search network algorithm called NAS-PERIRB is proposed to simplify the design of deep learning network structures, with the use of Pareto efficiency reward and insert replay buffer. The algorithm improves training efficiency by employing early stopping and insert replay buffer techniques. Evaluation on two datasets demonstrates that the NAS-PERIRB achieves 99% accuracy in various situations, indicating its capability in independently designing network structures.

Agitation Prevalence in People With Dementia in Australian Residential Aged Care Facilities: Findings From Machine Learning of Electronic Health Records

Yunshu Zhu, Ting Song, Zhenyu Zhang, Chao Deng, Mohammad Alkhalaf, Wanqing Li, Mengyang Yin, Hui Chen (Rita) Chang, Ping Yu

Summary: This study used artificial intelligence technologies to analyze the prevalence of agitated behaviors in people with dementia in residential aged care facilities in Australia. A total of 59 observable agitated behaviors were found. No significant differences were found in agitation prevalence between genders or facility types. Multiple coexisting agitated behaviors were found in a high percentage of dementia patients, indicating a heavy caregiver burden in these facilities. Improving caregiver training and care models are urgently needed for the sustainability of dementia care in residential aged care facilities.

Constrained optimization for stratified treatment rules in reducing hospital readmission rates of diabetic patients

Haiyan Yu, Ching-Chi Yang, Ping Yu

Summary: Diabetic patients require personalized treatments, and stratifying patients into sub-classes can help determine the optimal treatment for each group. However, challenges arise in conducting counterfactual inference and dealing with confounding effects of covariates. To address these challenges, a method called COSTAR is proposed, which uses constrained optimization to find the optimal treatment considering missing outcomes and covariate balance constraints. Experimental results with real-world data show that COSTAR outperforms related methods in reducing hospital readmission rates within 30 days and provides robust estimation of mean treatment response in each sub-class.

The Neurobase of ambiguity loss aversion about decision making

Yiqin Hu, Xinbo Lu, Wanjun Zheng, Luting Wang, Ping Yu

Summary: In daily decision-making, the human brain is modulated by the prefrontal cortex (PFC), particularly the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), in risk and ambiguity decision-making. Through the use of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), researchers revealed the causal relationship between the DLPFC and ambiguity decision-making. The study showed that the left DLPFC stimulation had a significant effect on ambiguity to loss, while its effect on ambiguity to gain was insignificant, and the right DLPFC stimulation had an insignificant effect on both ambiguity to gain and ambiguity to loss. Furthermore, participants who received anodal stimulation in the left DLPFC showed a lower degree of attitudes toward ambiguity loss, suggesting a strong aversion to ambiguity loss after the stimulation.

The impact of stigma on mental health and quality of life of infertile women: A systematic review

Yue Xie, Yue Ren, Changmin Niu, Ying Zheng, Ping Yu, Lin Li

Summary: Approximately 53.08% to 64% of female infertility patients worldwide are affected by the stigma of not giving birth to children. This stigma not only harms the mental health of these patients, but also affects their quality of life, leading to adverse social consequences such as domestic violence, marriage breakdown, and delay in receiving treatment. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the stigma experienced by these patients and develop effective interventions to alleviate it.

Green space type and healthy ageing in place: An Australian longitudinal study

Eme Eseme John, Thomas Astell-Burt, Ping Yu, Chris Brennan-Horley, Xiaoqi Feng

Summary: This study investigates the association between different types of green spaces and a person's healthy aging score (HAS) through two years of continuous exposure. The findings suggest that for women who did not relocate, their functional capacity is lower but resilience is higher compared to those who relocated. For participants who did not relocate, 30% grass cover is associated with decreased functional capacity and HAS, while 5-9% low-lying vegetation is associated with a decline in functional capacity and HAS but improved resilience. Green spaces with over 30% tree canopy appear to be most beneficial for functional capacity, resilience, and HAS.

Malnutrition and its contributing factors for older people living in residential aged care facilities: Insights from natural language processing of aged care records

Mohammad Alkhalaf, Zhenyu Zhang, Hui-Chen (Rita) Chang, Wenxi Wei, Mengyang Yin, Chao Deng, Ping Yu

Summary: This study explores the risk factors for malnutrition among older people in residential aged care facilities using natural language processing (NLP) techniques. The research demonstrates the importance of NLP technology in uncovering key information about health risks for older people. It identifies that 33% of older people suffer from malnutrition and suggests that NLP can be applied to predict other health risks in this setting.

Impact of an emergency department rapid response system on inpatient clinical deterioration: A controlled pre-post study

Belinda Munroe, Kate Curtis, Margaret Fry, Sharyn Balzer, Panchalee Perara, Tracey Couttie, Karlie Royston, Ping Yu, Natasha Tidswell, Julie Considine

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the impact of implementing the Emergency Department Clinical Emergency Response System (EDCERS) on inpatient deterioration events and identify causal factors. The results demonstrate that EDCERS implementation reduces the number of inpatient deterioration events within 72 hours of emergency admission. However, there is no overall change in the rate of inpatient deterioration events. Therefore, this study supports the wider implementation of rapid response systems in the emergency department to improve the management and outcomes of deteriorating patients.
