Summary: This study aims to investigate the frequency, epidemiological profile, and traditional risk factors of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) associated or not with oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) in Latin America. The results suggest that OSCC-dn is more frequent in Latin America, with regional variations in some clinical and histopathological features.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the risk and incidence of head and neck cancer in Fanconi Anemia patients. The study found that 8.6% of patients in this population had leukoplakia or erythroplakia, and 3.8% developed malignancy. The study also suggested that screening for head and neck cancer should begin at age 10 or after hematopoietic stem cell transplant in Fanconi Anemia patients.

Summary: This study evaluated the expression of VDAC1 protein in biopsies of oral premalignant, malignant, and malignancy-neutral lesions. The results showed that VDAC1 expression was lower in oral squamous cell carcinoma and epithelial dysplasia tissues compared to fibrous hyperplasia tissues.

Summary: This study identified T regulatory cells (Treg) infiltrating oral dysplastic lesions, suggesting their association with disease progression. CD8(+) effector T cells and immune checkpoint markers PD-1 and PD-L1 were also associated with oral cancer progression, indicating the presence of an adaptive immune response and T-cell exhaustion.

Summary: Shifted-Excitation Raman Difference Spectroscopy (SERDS) can effectively distinguish between non-malignant lesions and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) in the oral cavity with high accuracy. The study findings highlight the potential of SERDS for the diagnosis of oral cavity lesions.

Summary: Although the specific role of EBV in oral carcinogenesis remains unclear, studies have detected EBV DNA and proteins in tissues from OSCC patients. However, methodological heterogeneity has led to inconsistent results, highlighting the need for further research.

Summary: This study demonstrates the upregulation of multiple oncogenic miRNAs in swabbed OPMD and OSCC samples. miRNA expression in swabbed collectives enables the differentiation between normal mucosa and OPMD/OSCC, independent of their histopathological severity.

Summary: The study constructed a novel 4-gene signature model to simultaneously assess the malignant risk of OPMDs and predict the prognosis of OSCC. The model effectively distinguished OSCC from OPMDs and normal tissues, showing significant differences in survival analysis.

Summary: Oral cancer is the most common type of head and neck cancer worldwide, with early detection leading to high survival rates. However, lack of public awareness and delays in referrals contribute to late-stage diagnoses. This study explores the use of deep learning and computer vision techniques for automated detection and classification of oral potentially malignant disorders, offering a low-cost and non-invasive tool to improve screening processes and detection outcomes.

Summary: Potentially premalignant oral lesions form the basis of most cell carcinomas, with limited improvement in prognosis and 5-year survival rate despite advances in diagnosis and treatment. Early detection and targeted treatment are ideal for preventing malignant transformation. The higher malignant transformation rates observed in different age groups highlight the importance of researching these lesions.

Summary: This study analyzed the levels of serum SNCG and SCCAg in patients with OSCC, OPMD, and controls, and found significantly higher levels in OSCC patients. The combined detection of SNCG and SCCAg showed better diagnostic value than single detection, potentially becoming a new standard method for distinguishing between OSCC and OPMDs.

Summary: This study evaluated the expression level of mucin1 in saliva and its correlation with clinical and histological variables in oral potentially malignant disorders and oral squamous cell carcinoma patients. The results showed that mucin1 expression in saliva was significantly elevated in both oral potentially malignant disorders and oral squamous cell carcinoma patients compared with controls, and it correlated with the severity and metastasis of the diseases. These findings suggest that mucin1 in saliva may serve as a potential biomarker for diagnosing these oral diseases.

Summary: Precancerous lesions provide valuable insights into tumor development and prognosis. This study comprehensively characterized the genomic features of leukoplakia, a precancerous lesion, and identified increasing mutation rates and early caspase-8 inactivation during the progression from benign leukoplakia to squamous cell carcinoma. The findings highlight the potential for disease interception at the premalignant stage.
