Summary: This work investigates the antifriction and antiwear properties of TiO2 nanoparticles coated with oleic acid as additives in a low viscosity polyalphaolefin base oil. The optimal concentration of nanoadditives was determined through tribological experiments, and the nanolubricants showed lower friction coefficients and reduced wear compared to the base oil. The research also reveals the occurrence of tribofilm, mending, and polishing mechanisms. Additionally, the thermal conductivity of the optimal nanolubricant was measured at different temperatures.

Summary: The lubrication of hydrodynamic journal bearings using shear thinning fluids was investigated by comparing three different constitutive models. The Carreau and Cross models yield higher magnitudes of pressure at high shear rates compared to the power-law model, but all three models are in better agreement at low shear rates.

Summary: This research investigates the Stokesian flow of an axisymmetric, incompressible couple stress fluid through a porous material enclosing a solid sphere in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. The problem is solved analytically using the separation of variables technique. The obtained expressions involve modified Bessel functions, trigonometric functions, and algebraic functions and provide insight into the drag force experienced by the solid sphere in the porous material under the applied magnetic field.

Summary: The review discussed the synthesis and characterization of polymers and polymer composites derived from vegetable oils for use as multifunctional additives in eco-friendly lubricant formulations. The additives showed excellent performance as viscosity index improvers, pour point depressants, and antifriction additives when blended with lubricating base oils. These environmentally friendly additives were found to be non-toxic and biodegradable, outperforming commercial petroleum-based additives.

Summary: Friction coefficients and wear rates of PLA-stainless steel pair were investigated using four aprotic imidazolium and one bio-based protic ammonium ionic liquid (IL) lubricants. The ILs greatly reduced the friction coefficient and prevented wear in the rotational pin-on-disk test. The halogen-free protic ammonium IL exhibited the best performance in the linear reciprocating sliding test.

Summary: This paper provides a state-of-the-art review of various numerical and experimental studies conducted over the past two decades to enhance the tribological performance of journal bearings using different lubricants. Despite exemplary tribological performance, there is a dire need for computational methods to evaluate journal bearing performance considering the effects of nanolubricants.

Summary: This study investigates the combined influence of slip boundary condition and non-Newtonian lubricants on the tribological performance of hydrodynamic textured journal bearing. The modified Reynolds equation with considering the Elrod cavitation model is solved to accurately predict the effect of air/vapor bubble formation in the diverging zone of the slip-texture bearing. The results show that changing the rheology of the lubricant from Newtonian to Pseudoplastic significantly improves the maximum pressure, average rise in temperature, and lubricant-bearing friction-force of the slip-texture bearings.

Summary: This study investigated the use of polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a polymer improver for the viscosity index (VI) of paraffinic oil. Characterization of PEG/paraffinic oil blends at different concentrations revealed that a blend containing 3% PEG resulted in the optimal VI improvement. Optical microscopy and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the distribution of smaller polymer particles in blends containing 3% and 2% PEG, with no intermolecular interactions between the polymer and oil observed. Rheological tests showed that increasing the blend temperature improved the dispersion of PEG chains in the paraffin oil. The correlation between the activation energy difference and the viscosity index values was established. Overall, adding PEG to paraffinic oil holds promise for viscosity index improvement and industrial applications.

Summary: This study investigates the static characteristics of water-lubricated hydrodynamic journal bearings under three-dimensional slip velocity boundary conditions. The CFD method is verified under the non-slip boundary condition and a three-dimensional slip velocity equation based on the Navier slip velocity boundary condition is proposed. The results show that with an increase in slip length, the load capacity and friction power decrease, while an increase in attitude angle leads to an increase in load capacity and friction power.

Summary: In this study, the static behavior of misaligned journal bearings under heavy loads was investigated using a non-Newtonian lubricant (pseudoplastic fluid with power-law relationship). The generalized average Reynolds equation for rough journal bearing under pseudoplastic lubricant flow was derived, using the average flow method of Patir and Cheng for model equation establishment. The numerical solution of bearing performance parameters was obtained using the finite difference method and the successive over-relaxation method, and it was found that surface roughness could partially compensate for the effects of liner elastic deformation and lubricant shear thinning. The derived generalized average Reynolds equation can be applied not only in the research of hydrodynamic lubrication but also in the research of mixed lubrication.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of silicone-containing additives on the tribological and rheological properties of different lubricant blends. It is found that the addition of amorphous silica improves the anti-seizure and anti-wear properties of the tested lubricants, while montmorillonite significantly enhances the lubricating properties compared to the silica additive. The rheological tests indicate that the applied additives alter the dynamic viscosity and chemical structure of the lubricants. The main finding of this study is that the use of montmorillonite and aerosil additives enhances the functional properties of vegetable-based plastic lubricants. The performance of tribological and rheological tests is crucial for understanding the interaction of siliceous additives with vegetable-oil-based greases.

Summary: This paper discusses the applicability of linear/nonlinear methods for representing the dynamics of hydrodynamic bearings in rotor dynamics. Numerical simulations were performed using a computational model, and the responses of linear and nonlinear models were compared. The results showed that trilobed bearings are more susceptible to nonlinear effects, which is important for fault diagnosis in the field of structural health monitoring.
