Summary: The use of Desmostachya bipinnata for the biosynthesis of TiO2NPs has been explored in this study. These nanoparticles have larvicidal and pupicidal effects on mosquitoes and agricultural pests, while showing lower toxicity to non-target organisms. The study provides pioneering evidence for the potential use of D. bipinnata-mediated TiO2NPs for mosquito and pest control.

Summary: An extract from brine samples obtained through the Greek style debittering process of Kalamon olive fruits showed strong antioxidant capacity and DNA-protective activity. The extract consisted mainly of hydroxytyrosol, verbascoside, and tyrosol. In cell-free assays, the extract demonstrated radical scavenging ability, while in cell cultures, it exhibited cell type specific responses and protected against H2O2-induced DNA damage. Overall, this study highlights the potential of table olive wastewaters as a valuable source of bioactive compounds for various industries.

Summary: This study evaluated the response of Desmostachya bipinnata L. populations from arid regions to adaptability to aridity through the analysis of morpho-physiological and leaf surface attributes, as well as antioxidant potential. The results showed that the plant exhibited reduced vegetative growth and increased root growth in response to increased aridity. Additionally, degradation of chlorophyll a and reduced carotenoid content were observed, along with increased activities of antioxidant enzymes. The concentration of Na+ in the shoot increased, while K+ and Mg2+ concentration decreased.

Summary: The present study aimed to explore the toxicity of penoxsulam and the protective effects of blueberry extract in roots of Allium cepa L. Penoxsulam exposure inhibited cell division, rooting percentage, growth rate, root length, and weight gain, and induced chromosomal anomalies and DNA strand breaks. Blueberry extracts reduced penoxsulam toxicity in a concentration-dependent manner and showed positive effects on cytological, morphological, and oxidative stress parameters.

Summary: Pre-treatment with methyl jasmonate and methyl-beta-cyclodextrin followed by cadmium induced the highest ferric reducing antioxidant power in peanut hairy root culture. Crude extracts showed DNA-protective activity at low concentrations, but exhibited pro-oxidant activity at higher concentrations. The bioactive compounds in hairy root extracts have the potential to serve as health-promoting or cancer chemotherapeutic agents, with both antioxidant and pro-oxidant activities in a concentration-dependent manner.

Summary: Nutritional supplementations, also known as nutraceuticals, are extracted from edible sources and have medical benefits as well as primary nutritional values. They can alter gut microbiota, prevent chronic non-communicable degenerative diseases, and alleviate complications in preterm babies. The molecular pathways in these diseases can be regulated or modulated by nutraceutical supplementations. Advanced genome-editing techniques and delivery systems can also be applied in therapeutic activities.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of blocking ceramide clearance in drug-resistant acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a major obstacle in successful treatment. By employing agents that inhibit ceramide hydrolysis and glycosylation, the study demonstrates elevated intracellular ceramide levels, impaired mitochondrial function, enhanced caspase activation, and cell death in drug-resistant AML models. The findings suggest that targeting sphingolipid metabolic pathways could enhance vulnerability of leukemia cells in the drug-resistant setting, providing a novel therapeutic strategy for difficult-to-treat cancers.

Summary: The organization of eukaryotic genome in the nucleus is complex and dynamic, and its morphology and size have significant impact on nuclear mechanics, chromatin organization, gene expression, cell functionality, and disease development. Abnormal nuclear envelope morphologies are implicated in human disorders. However, our knowledge about the molecular mechanisms regulating nuclear morphology and cell functionality during health and illness is limited. This review discusses the essential components governing nuclear organization and the functional consequences associated with nuclear morphometric aberrations, as well as recent developments with diagnostic and therapeutic implications for nuclear morphology.

Summary: The aberrant expression of lncRNA ABHD11-AS1 has been linked to the development and progression of various cancers, with its high expression observed in gastric, lung, breast, colorectal, thyroid, pancreas, ovary, endometrium, cervix, and bladder cancers. It has clinical significance in prognosis, diagnosis, prediction of cancer progression stage, and treatment response. ABHD11-AS1 exerts oncogenic effects by altering various mechanisms and has prognostic potential in certain cancers. However, further research is needed to elucidate the specific role of ABHD11-AS1 in tumor development, prognosis, progression, and treatment.

Summary: This article reviews the biology of leukemia stem cells (LSCs) in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), focusing on their relationship with the heterogeneous nature of AML and its high relapse rate. The defining functional and phenotypic features of LSCs are discussed, including their surface and metabolic phenotypes that differentiate them from normal hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). The potential for using this information to improve therapy and address clinical needs is highlighted, as well as the current gaps in the scientific understanding of LSCs.
