Summary: This study aimed to improve the stability of Inconel 718 against creep through induction heating during the process of laser-directed energy deposition. The induction heating dissolved the Laves phase, reduced Nb segregation, and led to the formation of directionally solidified columnar grains. The deposit produced by induction heating exhibited superior creep stability according to nanoindentation creep testing.

Summary: This study successfully addressed the carbon enrichment issue in dissimilar metal welding using solid-state friction welding, producing defect-free weldment. The grain refinement in the welding region resulted in the highest hardness at the Inconel 718/F22 weld interface. In tensile tests, the Inconel 718/F22 welds exhibited lower toughness compared to those prepared with an Inconel 625 interlayer.

Summary: Fine equiaxed grain regions are frequently observed in additively manufactured Inconel 718 alloy. Through experimental proof, it has been shown that the grain refinement is caused by ISRO-mediated nucleation mechanism, expanding perspectives on microstructure control in additive manufacturing of Ni-based superalloys.

Summary: A mathematical model was developed to investigate the effects of electromagnetic stirring on nitrogen distribution and denitrification reactions during vacuum induction melting of superalloys. The results showed that electromagnetic stirring accelerated nitrogen mass transfer rate and had a significant impact on nitrogen content distribution in the melt pool.

Summary: This paper investigates the microstructure and mechanical properties of a novel Inconel 718 strut tensile sample fabricated using selective laser melting. The results show that the strut sample has higher and more homogeneous mechanical properties compared to standard tensile samples. However, there are measurement errors in the novel strut tensile test that need to be addressed for future improvements.

Summary: This paper investigates the quantitative correlation between isothermal LCF fatigue behavior and surface integrity, as well as the influence of machining conditions on fatigue life. The experimental results show that by changing the nose radius of the tool, better surface integrity and longer fatigue life can be achieved.

Summary: We investigated the mechanisms of heterogeneous nucleation of γ'' precipitates on pre-existing γ' precipitates in Inconel 718-based alloys using phase field simulations and statistical analysis. The size of γ' precipitates, interfacial energies between γ, γ' and γ'' phases, and the solute depletion zone around growing γ' precipitates were found to determine the choice between the formation of compact and sandwich-like coprecipitates.

Summary: Hybrid additive manufacturing aims to improve the mechanical properties of additive manufactured parts by modifying the microstructure and eliminating defects. Anisotropic properties of these parts, as demonstrated by columnar grain morphology and texture, were studied through testing and characterization. The role of initial microstructure and deformation direction in achieving a more uniform microstructure under high-flow stress conditions was highlighted for Inconel 718.

Summary: Nickel-based superalloys, such as Inconel 718, are widely used in various industries due to their high strength, oxidation, and corrosion resistance. This study investigates the microstructural defects induced by additive manufacturing and their contribution to torsional fatigue fracture of Inconel 718 samples. Analysis of as-built and heat-treated samples reveals that surface and sub-surface defects, such as lack of fusion regions and un-melted powder particles, are the primary initiation points of torsional fatigue cracks.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of build orientation and heat treatment schedule on the micro-structure and mechanical properties of thin-walled and additively manufactured IN718 components. The findings show that heat treatment increases the yield strength along the build direction but has no effect on the elastic modulus. Solidification defects result in strain localisation and scatter in macroscopic strain.

Summary: The wear mechanisms of ceramic cutting tools were investigated when high-speed turning nickel-based alloys. Notch wear and flank wear were identified as the main wear modes. A Ti-enriched belt was found at the boundary of the wear band, indicating diffusion between the workpiece material and tool matrix.

Summary: This study compared the effects of three different mechanical finishing processes on the surface properties of Inconel 718 alloy components, including polishing, burnishing, and hammer-peening. It was found that each technology excelled in improving surface characteristics, but showed slight differences in roughness and residual stress.

Summary: Due to its crucial role in global sustainability, it is necessary to make manufacturing more sustainable. This study experimentally evaluated the energy consumption required for manufacturing Inconel 718 parts using additive manufacturing and post-process machining, and examined the influence of process parameters on energy consumption. The results showed that a proper choice of process parameters can significantly reduce energy consumption while achieving low surface roughness and high density.
