Summary: The coordination-driven self-assembly with TPE units has attracted much attention for applications in chemical sensors, cell imaging agents, light-harvesting systems, etc., thanks to the potential of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomena. Recent advances have been made in the design and application of TPE-based metallacycles, metallacages, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and coordination polymers (CPs), leading to improved stabilities and enhanced chemical responses exhibited by the products.

Summary: Four newly synthesized fluorescent dyes were reported, showing aggregation-induced emission effects and varying fluorescence colors. Interestingly, two of them could be switched in the solid state by mechanical or solvent actions, while the other two exhibited different fluorescence responses.

Summary: In this study, two new tetraphenylethylene-rufigallol-tetraphenylethylene triads were synthesized with good fluorescence properties and studied for their liquid crystalline behaviors. The compound with dodecyl chains demonstrated lower phase transition temperatures and a wider mesophase temperature range compared to the other compound. These findings suggest that symmetrical trimers are an effective approach for constructing novel fluorescence columnar liquid crystals.

Summary: This study reported two novel liquid crystals with good fluorescence in aggregated states, synthesized by a simple procedure. The columnar liquid crystalline behaviors and AIE fluorescence properties of the compounds were confirmed, showing that the properties can be tuned by the lengths of the terminal alkyl chains.

Summary: The study experimentally evaluated the quantum efficiencies of photoisomerization and photocyclization in tetraphenylethylene molecules, demonstrating that photoisomerization is the dominant photophysical pathway in solution, responsible for nearly all nonradiative decay of the molecule's excited state in degassed solution.

Summary: This study developed a facile synthesis method for AIE-active HPGs and designed a solid-state sensor for detecting nitroaromatic explosives. The resulting AIE-active HPGs showed excellent AIE characteristics and high sensitivity towards nitro compounds by conjugating tetraphenylethylene moieties onto the periphery of the HPGs.

Summary: In this study, tetraphenylethylene-based trithiocarbonate polymers with high molecular weights were successfully synthesized, exhibiting non-emissive properties but strong emission under UV irradiation. This unique feature provides them with potential applications in photopatterning, anti-counterfeit labels, and UV detection.

Summary: Researchers synthesized and utilized tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-containing monomers to prepare TPE-appended maleic anhydride terpolymers. These terpolymers exhibited fluorescence changes in response to pH, ionic strength, Ca2+, and bovine serum albumin, thanks to the synergistic interaction of the TPE moiety and the terpolymer conformation change. The insights gained from this study are important for developing efficient and versatile stimuli-responsive AIE-active polymer platforms for chemo-sensing and bioimaging.

Summary: In this study, we describe the self-assembly of a tetraphenylethylene (TPE) derivative with amino acid substitution into a hydrogen-bonded dimeric capsule. Depending on the conditions, the TPE derivative exhibits bluish photoluminescence with QYs up to 24% due to the AIE effect and excimer formation.

Summary: A study introduced an organic functional group to distinguish the four phenyl rings of tetraphenylethylene, and determined the in situ temperature-dependent crystal structures to show conformational changes of tert-butyl (3-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)phenyl)carbamate (BTPC). The isotropic displacement parameters of each phenyl further confirmed the inequivalent vibrations of the molecule due to the crystal's anisotropy.

Summary: By using multi-component emissive metallacages as solid-state fluorescent materials, high quantum yield emission performance was achieved by restricting molecular motions and suppressing non-radiative decay. One of the metallacages exhibited very high fluorescence quantum yield in the solid state and was successfully applied as a coating for white-light emission in a blue LED bulb.

Summary: Chiral transition metal complexes with privileged ligands are efficient catalysts for various asymmetric organic transformations. Transition metal complexes of C1-symmetric pyrrolidine-based ligands have been widely used in asymmetric organic reactions. However, a comprehensive review article on the transition metal complexes of chiral C1-symmetric pyrrolidine-based ligands derived from (L)-proline has not been published.
