Trityl chloride (TrCl), efficiently catalyzes the one-pot multi-component condensation of beta-naphthol with aromatic aldehydes and amides/thioamides/carbamates such as acetamide, benzamide, nicotinamide, thioacetamide, and methylcarbamate under solvent-free and neutral conditions to afford 1-amido-alkyl-2-naphthols, 1-thioamido-alkyl-2-naphthols, and 1-carbamato-alkyl-2-naphthols in high yields and very short reaction times. Mechanistically, it is interesting that trityl chloride through the in situ generation of trityl carbocation with inherent instability is efficient as a reusable homogeneous organocatalyst in neutral media. Separation of Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Porous Materials

Summary: Industrial-scale thermal separation processes contribute to the increase in carbon dioxide emissions. Porous materials, like metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), can potentially reduce these emissions by achieving nonthermal chemical separations through the physical adsorption of target species. This study focuses on the synthesis of channel-based MOFs NU-2000 and NU-2001, which can separate industrially relevant xylene isomers under ambient conditions due to sub-angstrom size differences. By increasing the linker dimensionality from 2D to 3D, precise control of MOF pore size and aperture can be achieved, independent of linker orientation.

Summary: The study focuses on the strap elimination of a carboxylate-carrying TB in solution and Zr(IV)-based MOFs, revealing different reactions depending on solvent used. In the MOF synthetic system, the derivatization process is topology-guided and dependent on local acid concentration, resulting in the formation of Zr-MOFs with different topologies. Additionally, a novel post-synthetically water-induced in situ linker formylation process was discovered in one of the MOFs.

A nitrogen-based chiral catenane for enantioenriching photocatalytic aerobic oxidation

Masoud Kazem-Rostami

Summary: This study utilizes Troger's base analogs (TBAs) to design chiral macrocycles called Trogerophanes, which possess unique bent structures and stereogenic amine groups. These chiral donor macrocycles are mechanically interlocked with an electron-deficient macrocycle, resulting in the generation of a charge-transfer absorption band and the amplification of chiroptical properties. The study also demonstrates the discriminatory interactions of TBAs with chiral acids and their application in a photocatalytic oxidation process.
