Summary: An acid-catalyzed regioselective cyclization reaction of 2,5-disubstituted-1,3,4-thiadiazoles and 1,3,4-oxadiazoles has been developed. The precursors alkyl 2-(methylthio)-2-thioxoacetates/alkyl 2-amino-2-thioxoacetates react efficiently with acyl hydrazides, leading to a series of dehydrative and desulfurative products. Among the mentioned procedures, the alkyl 2-amino-2-thioxoacetate pathway shows excellent yield. The reported methods are operationally simplistic and highly efficient with metal-free conditions, demonstrating significant functional group compatibility. Regioselective cyclized products were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies.

Summary: This article reports a new method for the preparation of xanthene and pyrimidinone compounds by a one-pot method using polymeric aluminum chloride (PAC) and silica gel under mechanical grinding conditions. The reconstitution of PAC and silica gel during the grinding process leads to the formation of a new composite catalyst (PAC-silica gel), which exhibits good stability and wide applicability. The formation of the Al-O-Si active center through in situ grinding recombination is revealed to be the key to the effective catalytic performance of the PAC-silica gel composites. Mechanical ball milling serves as both a self-assembly inducer and a driving force for the catalytic reaction. This one-pot catalytic method eliminates the need for complex preparation processes for catalytic materials and shows the successful application of mechanochemistry in materials and organic synthesis.

Summary: In order to overcome the drawbacks of the commonly used naphthenic acid (NA) system for yttrium (Y) separation, a novel extractant, 2-(bis((2-ethylhexyl)oxy)phosphoryl)-2-hydroxy-acetic acid (HPOAc, HL), was designed and synthesized by combining the functional groups of commercial organophosphorus extractants, carboxylic acids, and alcohol phase modifiers. HPOAc showed higher extraction ability for REEs(III) and better performance in the separation of Ln(III) and Y(III) compared to NA and CA-12. A cascade extraction process using HPOAc as the extractant was developed, achieving a Y product with a purity of 99.31 wt% through 20 stages of extraction and 4 stages of scrubbing.

Summary: A novel amide system containing N,N-bis (2-ethylhexyl)-2-methoxyacetamide (NBEHMOA), FeCl3 6H(2)O, and sulfonated kerosene was proposed for continuous extraction of lithium chloride from brines with high Mg/Li ratio. NBEHMOA showed higher and more stable Li+ and H+ extraction efficiency compared to conventional TBP and N523. The counter-current extraction process achieved high Li+ extraction efficiency and Li+ concentration in the stripping solution. FT-IR spectroscopy revealed the coordination mechanism between NBEHMOA and metal ions.

Summary: Industrial-scale thermal separation processes contribute to the increase in carbon dioxide emissions. Porous materials, like metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), can potentially reduce these emissions by achieving nonthermal chemical separations through the physical adsorption of target species. This study focuses on the synthesis of channel-based MOFs NU-2000 and NU-2001, which can separate industrially relevant xylene isomers under ambient conditions due to sub-angstrom size differences. By increasing the linker dimensionality from 2D to 3D, precise control of MOF pore size and aperture can be achieved, independent of linker orientation.
