Summary: A highly chemo- and enantioselective hydrogenation method for beta-sulfonyl-alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones was successfully developed, producing a variety of enantioenriched gamma-ketosulfones in good to high yields with excellent selectivities. Gram-scale asymmetric hydrogenation was carried out smoothly with high yields and selectivities. Preliminary DFT computations provided a reasonable explanation for the observed high chemoselectivity and enantioselectivity.

Summary: The divergent domino condensation/biannulation reaction of beta-(2-aminophenyl) alpha,beta-ynones with 1,3-dicarbonyls to construct a polycyclic 4H-pyrano[3,4-c]quinoline core was developed, catalyzed by p-TsOH center dot H2O. The reaction proceeds in ethanol with good to excellent yields, providing a simple and effective method for the synthesis of functionalized 4H-pyrano[3,4-c]quinolinones. Further elaboration with an excess of 20% NH4OH in EtOH at 50 degrees C helps achieve the synthesis of the perlodinine analogues benzo[c][2,7]naphthyridin-4(3H)-one derivatives in high yields.

Summary: This study presents a method for synthesizing diverse beta-functionalized ketones from readily available 1-arylallylic alcohols in the presence of (trimethylsilyl)methylpotassium (TMSCH2K). The reaction proceeds via the formation of a highly nucleophilic dipotassio alpha,beta-dianion, which serves as a metal homoenolate equivalent and allows the one-pot synthesis of alpha,beta-difunctionalized ketones.

Summary: A visible-light-promoted cascade cyclization reaction has been developed for the synthesis of tetrahydrobenzo[mn]cyclopenta[b]acridines using 3-ethynyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-2-carbonitriles and unsaturated alpha-bromocarbonyls. This reaction involves the formation of three C(sp(3))-C(sp(2)) bonds, one C(sp(2))-N bond, and three cycles in a single step, through the addition of a C-centered radical to the carbon-carbon triple bond and subsequent radical cyclizations. The reaction conditions are mild, and the reaction shows a wide substrate scope and high efficiency in bond formation.

Summary: Due to the unique chemical structure and photophysical properties, azulene derivatives hold great potential for various technical applications, such as molecular switching, sensors, solar cells, and biological activities. Apart from functionalizing existing azulene cores, direct construction of azulenes through condensation with odd-membered carbocycles is another classical method. Unconventional cyclization reactions involving alkynes can also lead to the formation of azulene, pseudoazulene, or azulenone skeletons. This mini review provides a classification of the interesting and practical cyclization reactions based on the function of alkynes, with the aim of attracting attention and promoting the development of nonalternant cyclization reactions of alkynes.

Summary: An efficient aminofluorosulfonylation strategy was developed for the synthesis of pyrazoline-functionalized aliphatic sulfonylfluorides using beta,gamma-unsaturated hydrazones, sulfur dioxide, and NFSI as starting materials. The sulfonyl fluoride products could be transformed into sulfonate esters and amides through the SuFEx click reactions. The reaction operates through a radical cyclization/SO2 insertion/fluorination cascade process.

Summary: This study investigated intramolecular cyclization reactions of arylpropargyl amides of electron-deficient alpha, beta-alkenyl carboxylates, such as fumarates and ethenetricarboxylates. The reactions yielded benz[f]isoindoline derivatives when fumaramides were reacted with a base, Et3N or DBU, in xylenes under air. Aroyl-substituted pyrrolidine derivatives were obtained as major products when amides of fumarate and ethenetricarboxylate were heated in DMSO. The reaction mechanisms were discussed using density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Summary: In this study, a low-metal iron-supported catalyst (Fe20/NC-Mg) was reported for the efficient synthesis of quinoxaline compounds, using water as a solvent and without additional bases. The synergistic effect of FeNx site and Mg (OH)2 nanorods in the catalyst played a key role in achieving high yields (82-91%) in 16 examples. The gram-level synthesis and reusability of the catalysts after four cycles demonstrated its industrial application potential.
