Summary: Functionalized aldimines have been used as new 1,4-dipole precursors in carbene catalysis, leading to enantiodivergent organocatalysis for the synthesis of both (R)- and (S)- enantiomers of compounds with quaternary carbon centers. The key factors for controlling enantioselectivity were found to be hydrogen bond C-H...F interactions between catalyst and substrate. These new 1,4-dipoles can also react with isatin and its imines under carbene catalysis, producing spiro oxindoles with excellent enantiomeric ratios.

Summary: The investigation and formalization of the distinctive dipole-transmissive dipolar cycloaddition (DTDC) methodology is reported. A DTDC procedure was developed by taking advantage of the structural complementarity of azide and diazoalkane 1,3-dipoles. This method allows for the rapid construction of functionalized polycyclic N-heterocycles through intramolecular azide-alkene 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions followed by N-derivatization and subsequent 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions.

Summary: In the past years, Pd-0-catalyzed C(sp(3))-H activation has provided efficient and economical methods for synthesizing carbo- and heterocycles via direct C(sp(2))-C(sp(3)) bond formation. This study reports a 1,4-Pd shift that enables the synthesis of N-heterocycles, which are difficult to build through direct reactions. The reaction involves the 1,4-Pd shift of o-bromo-N-methylanilines at the N-methyl group, followed by intramolecular trapping and remote C-C bond formation, resulting in the formation of biologically relevant isoindolines and beta-lactams. The selectivity of the reaction is influenced by the choice of ligand, with NHCs favoring the formation of products through remote C-C coupling.
