Summary: This study proposes a new method to benchmark university patents and commercialization performance by comparing corporate patent value. The results show that the estimated values of university patents can significantly explain technology-level income from licensing, with AUTM universities realizing an average of 16% of the estimated value of matched corporate patents.

Summary: Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and Africa in general have low carbon dioxide emissions, but emissions in SSA are increasing and pose concerns for human health and climate change. The study evaluates the environmental effect of international trade in 33 SSA countries from 1990 to 2020, and finds that trade reduces environmental pollution in both the short and long run. Additionally, exports and imports have a positive impact on reducing environmental pollution in SSA.

Summary: Patented inventions are important for generating firm value, and it is commonly believed that dense patent portfolios promote greater value. However, we challenge this belief and argue that the relationship between patent portfolio density and firm value depends on other invention-related factors. Our research suggests that dispersed patent portfolios are positively associated with firm value when technology inputs are young and far from the locus of inventive activity, while dense portfolios are positively associated with firm value under different conditions. We have examined these relationships using a stock return response model and found supporting evidence based on data from firms patenting in the chemicals technology area.

Summary: Long-form summary: The paper examines the impact of import competition on patent activities in Dutch manufacturing firms from 2000 to 2010. The findings suggest that more intense import competition results in a higher number of patent applications, increased forward citations, entry into new technology fields, and overall promotes innovation. This effect holds true even for firms solely engaged in domestic innovation. Import competition from high-wage countries as a region only affects the number and quality of patents, while there is no statistically significant influence from EU member states, China, or other countries.

Summary: Patents are important for firms to benefit from their innovations and deter competitors from imitation. This study investigates the potential bias arising from political ideology in patent examiners' decision-making. The findings suggest that the political ideology of patent examiners is generally unrelated to the outcomes of patent applications. However, there is evidence that politically active conservative-leaning examiners are more likely to grant patents, but only when there is ambiguity in the subject matter and examiners have greater discretion.

Summary: This study in Sweden shows that patent value indicators can help identify technological innovation, with patent renewal and patent family size indicating commercialization. Renewing a patent for at least 6 years can accurately predict the probability of commercialization, and renewal is the only indicator revealing the success of commercialization. Forward citations have a moderate relationship with both commercialization and successful innovation, possibly measuring external effects rather than private value.

Summary: The European patent system is undergoing major changes with the establishment of a European unitary patent and Unified Patent Court. While the new system brings potential advantages for patent holders and third parties, there are also uncertainties, drawbacks, and risks to consider. Organisations in the pharmaceutical sector should evaluate these factors before the new system takes effect.

Summary: Climate disasters have a positive impact on international trade, particularly on imports in developing countries. Importation in developing countries is likely to increase by about 6.7%, while export is expected to decrease by 0.65% after climate disasters occur. In contrast, the impact on imports and exports in developed countries is less significant. This difference is mainly attributed to the better preparedness and risk mitigation mechanisms in developed countries.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of international patent inflows on innovations in recipient countries, focusing on the solar PV industry. The findings show that international patent inflows have a positive impact on innovations, particularly for leading countries. This suggests that international patenting activities may exaggerate the technology gap between leading and lagging countries, highlighting the importance of promoting institutionalized technology cooperation between them.

Summary: We discover a previously unreported causal mechanism on how patent protection impacts exports. Using unique data on patenting and exporting activities at the product level for all French firms, our empirical analysis reveals a patent premium. We find that goods protected by patents in a specific destination country are associated with higher export quantities, ranging between four and eleven percent. By using rejected patent applications, which are not influenced by the firm, we confirm the causality of our findings. When firms lose patent protection, their exports collapse significantly.

Summary: Encouraging disclosure is important for the patent system, yet technical information in patent applications is often insufficient. Researchers use computational linguistics algorithms to measure the effectiveness of disclosure in patents and find that university patents are 0.4 standard deviations more readable than corporate patents. These results remain robust even after controlling for non-disclosure-related invention heterogeneity. Linguistic metrics are evaluated by a panel of expert student engineers and examined further using the USPTO 112(a) rejection criteria for lack of disclosure. The ability to quantify disclosure opens up new research avenues and potential pathways for improving disclosure.

Summary: By applying stochastic frontier analysis, the study estimates the trade efficiency between China and EU countries and analyzes the determinant factors. The results show an imbalance in trade efficiency between export and import, and western EU countries have the highest unexploited trade potential for China. The study also identifies tangible and intangible trade infrastructures as the key factors influencing trade efficiency.

Summary: Sustainability considerations are increasingly important for manufacturing companies, especially in the early stages of product design, to promote the development of products and processes with better environmental and social benefits. However, existing sustainability assessment tools are challenging to apply in the uncertain and data-scarce frontend of innovation. A systematic literature review provides best practices and design propositions to improve early-stage sustainability assessment, along with recommendations for designing and implementing sustainability assessment tools in technology development. Opportunities for future research, including refining the design propositions and operationalizing early-stage sustainability assessment, are also proposed.

Summary: Higher education institutions are encouraged to become entrepreneurial universities to deliver their third mission and cultivate entrepreneurial graduates. This paper argues that many of the activities engaged in by these institutions can be categorized as intrapreneurship rather than entrepreneurship. The focus on intrapreneurial activities is seen as crucial for sustaining the entrepreneurial university status. By examining the entrepreneurial activities of five universities in Europe, this research highlights the intrapreneurial dimensions and provides insights for future research in the context of intrapreneurship and the entrepreneurial university.

Summary: This study introduces the concept of the 'mixed gamble' of external search breadth for family firms, highlighting the unique trade-off between financial and socioemotional wealth gains and losses. The study examines the influence of family management and family generational stage on this mixed gamble, as well as the impact of export propensity. The findings suggest that family firms with greater family management and in first-generation prioritize current SEW losses over potential gains, resulting in lower external search breadth. However, export propensity can alter this trade-off and lead to higher external search breadth.
