Summary: A committee of internationally recognized experts achieved consensus on several aspects of sleeve gastrectomy (SG) through two rounds of voting, with 78 out of 97 proposed statements reaching agreement. They unanimously agreed that SG is not solely a restrictive procedure and is not suitable as a standalone primary surgical weight loss option for patients with Barrett's esophagus (BE) without dysplasia.

Summary: This study found that performing single-port sleeve gastrectomy in specific patients is feasible and non-inferior when compared to multiple-port sleeve gastrectomy. Further studies are needed to clarify the efficacy and safety of single-port sleeve gastrectomy.

Summary: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is a common bariatric procedure with low complication rates. Endoscopic negative pressure therapy has been effective for staple line leaks. A retrospective study on 12 patients found that simultaneous surgery and endoscopy may not result in better outcomes for patients with staple line leaks.

Summary: Despite being the most commonly performed bariatric operation worldwide, sleeve gastrectomy is associated with the development or worsening of pre-existing GERD postoperatively. However, there is a lack of information concerning the most appropriate preoperative workup and the factors that may contribute to the occurrence of reflux symptoms.

Summary: The study found that baseline serum levels of sclerostin are correlated with anthropometric measures of obesity and insulin resistance, particularly with peripheral insulin sensitivity. This suggests a close association between serum sclerostin and glycemic improvements after bariatric surgery.

Summary: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is a common bariatric procedure, and gastric leak (GL) is a primary complication. There are few studies comparing endoscopic and radiological stent placement for the treatment of GL. This study described the radiological stent placement technique and compared it to endoscopic placement, and summarized the incidence of complications after stent placement and removal.

Summary: This study compared surgeons who had received fellowship training in LSG with those who had not, analyzing data on operating times and outcomes for the first 100 LSG cases of each surgeon. The results showed trained surgeons had faster and more consistent operating times, with no correlation between case number and weight loss outcomes or safety profiles for either group. This suggests that the learning curves for LSG are established during formal fellowship training.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness, safety, and results of LSG and LSGFD in obese patients with or without GERD. The results showed that LSG and LSGFD had similar effects on weight loss and GERD resolution in obese patients. LSGFD also had a preventive effect on the occurrence and development of GERD. This suggests that LSGFD has clinical value in obese patients.

Summary: A cost-effectiveness analysis was conducted to evaluate the use of staple-line reinforcement in laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. The findings showed that reinforced stapling reduced minor postoperative bleeding but had no significant effect on major bleeding or leaks. Therefore, it is not cost-effective to routinely use staple-line reinforcement in this surgical procedure.

Summary: This study found that in cases of weight regain or insufficient weight loss after SG, revisional surgery with a long BPL should be considered. Long BPL type procedures (such as long BPL RYGB, OAGB) resulted in significant additional weight loss at 3 years. Conversion to a bypass procedure is effective in resolving symptoms such as GERD and dysphagia in post-SG patients.

Summary: This study investigated the safety and efficacy of revisional endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (R-ESG) in a large international cohort of patients who experienced weight regain after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). The results showed that R-ESG is a safe and effective method for facilitating weight loss in patients with weight recidivism after LSG, with sustained results at 1 year.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluated the long-term outcomes of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) as a revisional procedure after laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) and identified predictors of outcomes. The results showed that revision LSG provided long-term weight loss, but had significantly more complications and higher re-operation rates compared to primary LSG. Predictors of worse outcomes included eroded band, multiple prior bands, severe esophageal dysmotility, and elevated baseline weight.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility and safety of same-day discharge (SDD) protocol for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (SG). The results showed that SDD was successful in 96% of patients who met the discharge criteria, and the 90-day morbidity rate was similar to those who chose a same-day admission approach.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of sleeve gastrectomy on weight-independent improvements in liver steatosis in mice with diet-induced obesity. It was found that VSG not only improves liver fat content but also enhances insulin and glucagon sensitivity.
