Summary: This study aimed to explore and describe the experiences of LGBTQ student-athletes in order to identify ways to support their safe participation in sports. A meta-ethnography was conducted to synthesize qualitative research focused on student-athletes' experiences. The findings revealed persistent discrimination experienced by LGBTQ student-athletes in college sports, posing a significant risk to their mental health. Furthermore, there is a lack of qualitative research on LGBTQ youth sports participation and a lack of understanding of the experiences of bisexual, gay, and transgender students.

Summary: The objective of this study is to identify factors associated with alcohol-induced blackouts (AIBs) beyond estimated blood alcohol concentration (eBAC), including manner of drinking, combined alcohol and other substance use, and physiology. Students (N = 462) were assessed via e-surveys across 6 weekends. The study found that protective behavioral strategies were associated with decreased odds of AIBs, while combining cannabis with alcohol and engaging in certain drinking behaviors, such as playing drinking games and pregaming, were associated with increased risk of AIBs. These findings suggest that behavioral factors can be targeted for prevention of AIBs in college student drinkers.

Summary: Research suggests that Mindfulness-and Acceptance-Based Interventions (MABIs) can impact sport performance and performance-relevant factors, but questions remain regarding their effectiveness. This study investigated the effects of Mindful Sport Performance Enhancement (MSPE) interventions on collegiate athletes and found improvements in depressive symptoms, emotion regulation difficulties, self-rated sport performance, mindfulness, and sport enjoyment. The study also highlighted the importance of post-intervention readiness in long-term engagement in mindfulness practice and outcomes.

Summary: College students make up a significant portion of patients in psychiatric hospitals, with this study identifying five distinct clusters of mental health-related struggles among them. Students facing both alcohol-related and eating concerns alongside negative affect showed the highest levels of distress. Additionally, those in the NA/alcohol struggles group were more likely to be hospitalized, while the NA/eating concerns group, despite high distress levels, did not predict higher levels of care, indicating that outpatient students may experience similar levels of struggle as inpatient students.

Summary: This study aims to identify homogeneous drinking groups and develop a new tool to assess the severity of binge drinking regardless of gender. Through clustering analysis and a partial proportional odds model, key factors of drinking and behavior were identified, and homogeneous drinking groups were created. The results show a progressive severity in the drinking pattern, and frequency of drinking behavior and drunkenness are central features of binge drinking.

Summary: This study describes concussion characteristics among general college students and compares postinjury outcomes to intercollegiate student athletes. The findings emphasize the need for better medical care access for non-NCAA sanctioned athletes, as a large proportion of concussions in the student sample were sustained during sports participation. Additionally, students showed higher proportions of headache, migraine, anxiety, and depression compared to athletes.

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of spirulina supplementation on the immune cell indicators of young soccer players. The results showed that spirulina supplementation can inhibit the changes in leukocyte and monocyte ratios caused by intense exercise, and may improve immunity to parasites, pathogenic bacteria, and rapid-onset allergies.

Summary: Despite efforts to prevent alcohol misuse on college campuses and effective strategies to reduce negative consequences related to alcohol consumption, reducing alcohol-related negative consequences continues to be a challenge. Students with adverse childhood experiences are at greater risk for alcohol misuse, but research on the association between adverse childhood experiences and alcohol-related negative consequences is limited.

Summary: This study identified student characteristics associated with using protective behavioral strategies (PBS) to reduce harms when consuming alcohol. Attitudes toward alcohol in college life, Greek life participation, and sensation seeking were consistently associated with PBS use. Specific resources may be needed to encourage high sensation seeking students and those who believe alcohol is a part of college life to use PBS.
