The analysis of hair cortisol concentrations (HCC) is a promising new biomarker for retrospective measurement of chronic stress. The effect of basic military training (BMT) on chronic stress has not yet been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 10-week BMT on HCC, while further exploring the role of known and novel covariates. Young healthy male recruits of the Swiss Army participated twice, 10 weeks apart, in data collection (1st examination: n = 177; 2nd examination: n = 105). On two occasions, we assessed HCC, perceived stress and different candidate variables that may affect HCC (e.g. socioeconomic status, meteorological data). Military training increased perceived stress from the first to the second examination, but did not affect HCC. In line with this, there was no correlation between HCC and perceived stress ratings. This could be interpreted as a missing influence of mainly physical stress (e.g. exercise) on HCC. In contrast, significant correlations were found between HCC and ambient temperature, humidity and education. Future studies should control for meteorological data and educational status when examining HCC.

Resilience as a Protective Factor in Basic Military Training, a Longitudinal Study of the Swiss Armed Forces

Sandra Sefidan, Maria Pramstaller, Roberto La Marca, Thomas Wyss, Dena Sadeghi-Bahmani, Hubert Annen, Serge Brand

Summary: The study found that recruits with higher resilience scores were more likely to reduce perceived stress and psychological distress during military training, achieving better military performance. However, there were no differences in resilience scores, perceived stress, and psychological distress between recruits who continued training and dropouts.

Transformational Leadership, Achievement Motivation, and Perceived Stress in Basic Military Training: A Longitudinal Study of Swiss Armed Forces

Summary: This study found that the transformational leadership style in Swiss military recruits has a significant impact on their achievement motivation, organizational citizenship behavior, and perceived stress. Groups experiencing higher transformational leadership showed the highest scores for achievement motivation and OCB, and the lowest scores for perceived stress at week 11. Transformational leadership style fostered achievement motivation and OCB in Swiss military recruits, and protected them from stress both cross-sectionally and longitudinally.

An examination of model fit and measurement invariance of general mental ability and personality measures used in the multilingual context of the Swiss Armed Forces: A Bayesian structural equation modeling approach

Summary: The study examined the measurement model fit and invariance across the two largest language groups in Switzerland (German and French speakers) for general mental ability and personality tests used in the Swiss Armed Forces' cadre selection process. While partial approximate scalar invariance was found, certain test items were shown to function differently across the language groups. Future research will focus on assessing and addressing these non-invariances.

The Source of Power Matters: Positional Power as a Better Predictor of Sexual Interest Perceptions than Dispositional Power Among Men within a Military Context

Pei Hwa Goh, Peter Lucas Stoeckli, Dominik Schoebi, Hubert Annen

Summary: This research examines the influence of positional power and dispositional power on the perception of sexual interest in a military context. The results show that positional power induced by military rank leads to heightened sexual perceptions. Additionally, positional power is a better predictor of heightened perceived sexual interest compared to dispositional power.

Effects of Resilience Training on Resilient Functioning in Chronic Stress Situations among Cadets of the Swiss Armed Forces

Summary: This study examined the associations between resilient functioning and coping strategies, stress reactivity, self-efficacy, and well-being. The results showed that resilient functioning was positively associated with task-oriented coping and well-being, and negatively associated with emotion-oriented coping and stress reactivity. Furthermore, the intervention group demonstrated significant improvement in resilient functioning from pre- to post-intervention. These findings suggest that specific interventions have the potential to enhance resilient functioning.

Testosterone and cortisol responses to acute and prolonged stress during officer training school

Regula Zueger, Hubert Annen, Ulrike Ehlert

Summary: Prolonged or severe stress can inhibit the release of testosterone through the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis (HPG), while the response patterns to acute stress such as competition, social evaluation, or physical challenges are inconsistent. This study examined the changes in cortisol and testosterone levels during different types and durations of stress in the same individuals. The findings suggest that group stress tests and field exercises might be particularly challenging for young men and highlight the adaptive role of testosterone during acute challenges in prolonged stress.
