Summary: This study found that breast cancer patients can be divided into two groups based on the frequency of ALDH1 cells, corresponding to different types of stem cells. Additionally, epithelial precursors associated with a positive effect of chemotherapy and remission in breast cancer patients were found in normal breast tissue.

Summary: The hierarchy of heterogeneous tumor cell populations, with a small population of cancer stem cells (CSCs) at the top, is explained by the CSC model. These CSCs have the ability to self-renew and generate other cancer cell populations, similar to the function of normal adult stem cells. However, controversies exist regarding the existence and identification of CSCs, which may be attributed to technical differences in experimentation, CSC niche-dependency and plasticity, and CSC heterogeneity itself.

Summary: Lymphatic dysfunction is associated with the progression of several vascular disorders, and there are limited strategies currently available to promote new lymphatic vasculature. This study isolated lymphatic endothelial progenitor cells from human umbilical cord blood and found that they have the potential to promote lymphatic sprouts, highlighting the therapeutic potential of these cells. Delivery of lymphatic EPCs using alginate hydrogels also showed promise for possible therapeutic applications.

Summary: In this study, the isolation and characterization of polysaccharides were demonstrated using RG-II as a model, with the use of chromatographic, mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. These principles can be applied to the characterization of other saccharide structures and will provide insights into how saccharide structure relates to functional properties for researchers in the future.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the cancer stem cell (CSC) profile of well and poorly-differentiated HCCs and found that poorly-differentiated HCCs are highly susceptible to NK cell-based immunotherapy. This suggests that NK-cell based therapy can be used as a neoadjuvant or adjuvant therapy in poorly-differentiated HCCs.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the expression and prognostic role of cancer stem cell (CSC) markers in pediatric rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS). The expression of selected CSC markers was confirmed in RMS tissue, but no significant correlation was found with clinical and pathological prognostic factors. Further studies are needed to fully understand the relevance of these CSC markers in RMS carcinogenesis.

Summary: The inflammatory factors IL-6, MCP-1, and TGF-beta are closely related to hepatocarcinoma stem cells, significantly promoting the occurrence and deterioration of liver cancer. Inhibiting these factors can suppress the growth, migration, and invasion of liver cancer cells while promoting apoptosis.

Summary: Cancer stem cells (CSCs) exhibit functional heterogeneity and hierarchical organization, giving rise to tumor-initiating cells, drug-resistant cells, or metastasis-initiating cells. Various markers are used to identify CSCs, with a combination of markers used to demarcate the heterogeneous CSCs in solid tumors.

Summary: A novel fluorescence turn-on nano-aptamer sensor was designed for quantifying CD133, which achieved enhanced fluorescence signals of quantum dots through the hybridization between aptamers and ssRNA. The sensor demonstrated specificity, precision, and accuracy in detecting CD133 in lung cancer cells.

Summary: Chronic inflammation plays a key role in the development of primary liver cancers. This study found that long-term exposure of liver progenitor cells (LPCs) to Interleukin (IL)-17 cytokine promotes their transformation into cancer stem cells (CSCs). IL-17-neutralizing strategies can limit CSC occurrence and liver tumor progression through restored-expression of miR-122.

Summary: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common form of cancer worldwide, and cancer stem cells (CSCs) play a crucial role in its development. CircRNAs derived from exosomes are enriched in liver cancer CSCs and are associated with HCC development and prognosis. This finding supports the use of circRNAs as prognostic indicators for HCC patients and highlights the signaling between liver CSCs and exosomal messenger molecules.

Summary: Age-related cognitive decline is associated with disruptions in the microbiota-gut-brain axis, resulting in deficits in learning and memory, neuronal and synaptic function, dysbiosis of gut microbiota, and increased inflammation in the brain in aged mice. These disruptions are linked to the activation of the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway by LPS, contributing to neuroinflammation and cognitive decline.

Summary: This study designed a multifunctional linear DNA nanostructure (MLN) as a carrier of molecular beacons (MB-21) for detecting and intracellular imaging miRNA-21. The MLN-MB exhibited a detection limit of 320 pM for miRNA-21 and high specificity against other miRNAs. With its outstanding stability, dual recognition, and biocompatibility, MLN-MB holds great potential for early cancer diagnosis.
