Monica Gelzo, Maria Donata Di Taranto, Alvino Bisecco, Alessandra D'Amico, Rocco Capuano, Carola Giacobbe, Mafalda Caputo, Mario Cirillo, Gioacchino Tedeschi, Giuliana Fortunato, Gaetano Corso

Summary: CTX is a rare genetic metabolic disorder caused by a defect in bile acid biosynthesis, characterized by chronic diarrhea, cataracts, xanthomas, and neurological dysfunction, with significant variability in symptoms and age of onset. Early diagnosis through biochemical and genetic screening is crucial for timely pharmacological intervention and prevention of neurological complications.

Summary: Despite advancements in cardiovascular research, atherosclerosis remains the leading cause of death globally. Current imaging methods for diagnosing ASCVD lack the ability to accurately identify high-risk plaque rupture. Utilizing hydrogel nanoparticles encapsulating Gd-DTPA with active targeting of plaque macrophages can potentially enable earlier and more accurate diagnosis in the complex environment of human atherosclerotic plaque.

Summary: Lomitapide appears to provide better control of LDL-C levels in HoFH patients compared to LA, with a trend towards fewer total cardiovascular events in the former group. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings and determine if they lead to a reduction in cardiovascular risk.

B-Type Natriuretic Peptides and High-Sensitive Troponin I as COVID-19 Survival Factors: Which One Is the Best Performer?

Renato de Falco, Maria Vargas, Daniela Palma, Marcella Savoia, Anna Miscioscia, Biagio Pinchera, Martina Vano, Giuseppe Servillo, Ivan Gentile, Giuliana Fortunato

Summary: Elevated concentrations of BNP, NT-proBNP, and HsTnI have been reported in COVID-19 patients. This study aimed to assess their predictive value for fatal outcomes, with NT-proBNP and HsTnI showing superior performance compared to BNP. NT-proBNP was identified as the best prognostic tool for fatal outcomes in COVID-19 patients.

Summary: The tumor microenvironment in breast cancer plays a crucial role in tumor development and treatment response. Analyzing the immune cells in breast tissues can provide valuable information for the diagnosis and management of breast pathologies. The study suggests that a combination of cancer cell elimination and tumor microenvironment modulation could be a promising approach for breast cancer diagnosis and therapy.

A Comprehensive Analysis of the Expression Profiles of KCTD Proteins in Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia: Evidence of Selective Expression of KCTD1 in T-ALL

Summary: Acute leukemia, the most common pediatric cancer, is caused by the malignant transformation of B-cell or T-cell progenitors. The study found that KCTD15 was overexpressed in both B-ALL and T-ALL patients, while KCTD1 was upregulated in T-ALL patients. This study not only evaluated the dysregulation of all KCTDs simultaneously in specific pathological contexts for the first time, but also identified a potential biomarker for T-ALL.

Stratification of Patients with Coronary Artery Disease by Circulating Cytokines Profile: A Pilot Study

Concetta Iside, Ornella Affinito, Bruna Punzo, Marco Salvatore, Peppino Mirabelli, Carlo Cavaliere, Monica Franzese

Summary: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a long-term inflammatory process in which atherosclerosis plays a key role. Damaged endothelial cells release pro-inflammatory cytokines, contributing to vascular inflammation and disease progression. This study found increased levels of several cytokines in the serum of CAD patients, with most cytokines showing a gradual increase with disease severity. Moreover, the combination of serum cytokines may aid in risk stratification for patients suspected of having CAD.

Summary: This preliminary study compared peripheral blood parameters between malignant BC patients and benign breast condition patients, revealing increased peripheral T-helper lymphocytes and CD4/CD8 ratio in malignant BC cases. Additionally, logistic regression analysis identified malignant BC cases with elevated CA15-3 levels using hematocrit and neutrophils/lymphocytes ratio values. Further correlations were found in aggressive malignant BC cases with high Ki-67 levels.
