The molecular structure of Mn(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Ca(II) ferulates (4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamates) was studied. The selected metal ferulates were synthesized. Their composition was established by means of elementary and thermogravimetric analysis. The following spectroscopic methods were used: infrared (FT-IR), Raman (FT-Raman), nuclear magnetic resonance (C-13, H-1 NMR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV/VIS). On the basis of obtained results the electronic charge distribution in studied metal complexes in comparison with ferulic acid molecule was discussed. The microbiological study of ferulic acid and ferulates toward Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Candida albicans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Proteus vulgaris was done. New Coordination Polymers of Selected Lanthanides with 1,2-Phenylenediacetate Linker: Structures, Thermal and Luminescence Properties

Renata Lyszczek, Iwona Rusinek, Agnieszka Ostasz, Justyna Sienkiewicz-Gromiuk, Dmytro Vlasyuk, Marcin Groszek, Agnieszka Lipke, Oleksiy Pavlyuk

Summary: The solvothermal reactions of lanthanide salts with 1,2-phenylenediacetic acid in DMF solvent lead to the formation of metal complexes with structural similarities in two groups. Different characteristics are observed in lighter and heavier lanthanide complexes, such as the presence and coordination mode of DMF molecules, and the deprotonation of carboxylate groups. Thermal decomposition of isostructural complexes occurs similarly, with the formation of gaseous products. Luminescence properties in the visible and near-infrared regions are exhibited by the complexes of Eu, Tb, and Er.

Determination of the Effect of Wastewater on the Biological Activity of Mixtures of Fluoxetine and Its Metabolite Norfluoxetine with Nalidixic and Caffeic Acids with Use of E. coli Microbial Bioindicator Strains

Marzena Matejczyk, Piotr Ofman, Jozefa Wiater, Renata Swislocka, Pawel Kondzior, Wlodzimierz Lewandowski

Summary: In this study, the toxicity and oxidative stress generation of the antidepressant fluoxetine (FLU), its metabolite nor-fluoxetine (Nor-FLU), the antibiotic nalidixic acid (NA), caffeic acid (CA), and their mixtures were investigated in three different environments: microbial medium (MM), raw wastewaters (RW), and treated wastewaters (TW). The results showed that FLU, Nor-FLU, NA, CA, and their mixtures are toxic and can induce oxidative stress in E. coli strains. The presence of wastewater affected the toxic activity and oxidative stress synthesis of these chemicals and their mixtures. The strongest toxic activity and oxidative stress generation were observed with NA at a concentration of 1 mg/dm(3) and the mixture of FLU (1 mg/dm(3)), Nor-FLU (0.1 mg/dm(3)), and NA (0.1 mg/dm(3)).

Techno-economic assessment of waste mandarin biochar as a green adsorbent for binary dye wastewater effluents of methylene blue and basic fuchsin: Lab- and large-scale investigations

Ahmed S. El-Shafie, Evana Rahman, Yasser Gadelhak, Rehab Mahmoud, Marwa El-Azary

Summary: The recycling of waste mandarin peels into biochar (MRBC) has been used as a high performance and cost-effective adsorbent for treating polluted wastewater effluents. Batch adsorption studies were conducted to analyze the adsorption competency of MRBC on two dyes, methylene blue (MB) and basic fuchsin (BF), either in individual solutions or binary combinations. The results showed that MRBC was capable of effectively removing a high percentage of both dyes. However, the adsorption capacity decreased when the dyes were combined. The cost estimation of MRBC production and wastewater treatment indicated that both were relatively low.

Lead-free double perovskite Cs2NaInCl6 nanocrystals doped with Sb3+and Tb3+for copper ions detection in lubricating oil

Summary: This study synthesized Cs2NaInCl6 nanocrystals co-doped with Sb3+ and Tb3+ ions as probes for copper ions detection in lubricating oil. The introduction of Sb3+ effectively reduced the band gap of the host material and enabled energy transfer pathway for Tb3+ emission. The doped Tb3+ ions resulted in the suppression of emission due to electron transfer. The Cs2NaInCl6: 2.5 %Sb3+, 40 %Tb3+ NCs exhibited superior sensitivity and selectivity for copper ions detection.

Non-invasive analysis of reference glass and historical mosaic tesserae by means of reflectance infrared spectroscopy

Maria Cristina Caggiani, Germana Barone, Paolo Mazzoleni

Summary: Raman spectroscopy is commonly used for studying glassy materials in cultural heritage, but it is more difficult to interpret the spectra and apply the technique with portable instruments. In contrast, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) can be used in archaeometric investigations as it is portable and non-invasive. However, there is limited application of this technique to historical glasses. This exploratory work demonstrates the potential of DRIFTS, in combination with portable X-ray Fluorescence (pXRF) and EDS microanalyses, for studying the composition and alteration of glass samples in cultural heritage.
