We use Renewal Theory for the estimation and interpretation of the flare rate from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) soft X-ray flare catalogue. It is found that, in addition to the flare rate variability with the solar cycles, a much faster variation occurs. The fast variation on time scales of days and hours down to minute scale appears to be comparable with time intervals between two successive flares (waiting times). The detected fast non-stationarity of the flaring rate is discussed in the framework of the previously published stochastic models of the waiting time dynamics.

Summary: This study investigates the wind in the solar corona using observations from UVCS-SOHO and Metis on Solar Orbiter, revealing different wind flow velocities in specific regions and identifying the location where slow wind flow is observed. The findings provide insights into the dynamics of the solar corona and the transition between slow and fast wind speeds.

Summary: Observations by Metis of a CME reveal that most features seen in visible-light images are also visible in Ly-alpha images, although the latter appear more structured. The estimated expansion velocity of the event is below 140 km/s, suggesting Doppler dimming effects do not significantly reduce Ly-alpha emission from the CME.

Summary: The study aims to predict the galactic cosmic-ray flux for the Solar Orbiter mission in order to evaluate the performance of the Metis coronagraph. By comparing observations with Monte Carlo simulations, it was found that cosmic rays only interact with a fraction of the pixel sample and the overall efficiency for cosmic-ray identification is linked to certain GCR particles. This analysis will continue throughout the Solar Orbiter mission for diagnostic purposes and potential long-term monitoring of the GCR proton flux.

Summary: This letter discusses the first Solar Orbiter (SO)-Parker Solar Probe (PSP) quadrature on January 18, 2021 to investigate the evolution of solar wind from the extended corona to the inner heliosphere. By tracking the same plasma volume observed in the corona with Metis coronagraph on Solar Orbiter to PSP, it allows for the linking of local properties of the solar wind to its coronal source region. The close approach of PSP to the Sun and simultaneous Metis observation of the solar corona provide unprecedented accuracy in inferring the flow-aligned magnetic field and bulk kinetic energy flux density along the coronal current sheet.

Summary: This study presents a new solar radio imaging system that upgrades existing telescopes for solar observations. Through this system, over 170 solar images in the 18 - 26 GHz band have been obtained, filling the observational gap in solar imaging at these frequencies. These high-resolution images with low brightness temperature sensitivity can be used for long-term monitoring of the Sun and have implications for solar physics and space weather applications.

Summary: This study explores the solar wind measured by Parker Solar Probe and the coronal source region observed by METIS coronagraph aboard Solar Orbiter. The results indicate that the solar wind properties differ in regions with different magnetic field intensity, with stronger magnetic field regions showing lower bulk flux density and well-developed Alfvenic turbulence, while weaker magnetic field regions exhibit highly intermittent and poorly developed turbulent behavior, possibly due to large magnetic deflections associated with interchange reconnection.

Summary: This study focuses on the impact of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) and solar particles on the Metis coronagraph images. It discusses the effects of increasing solar activity on secondary particle production in the spacecraft. By comparing Monte Carlo simulations and observations, the study evaluates the efficiency of the algorithm used for cosmic-ray track removal and demonstrates the unchanged performance of the instrument during the first two years of the Solar Orbiter mission. The findings can also be used to estimate deep charging and energetic particles crossing in other instruments.
