The Quantitative Soil Pit Method for Measuring Belowground Carbon and Nitrogen Stocks

Many important questions in ecosystem science require estimates of stocks of soil C and nutrients. Quantitative soil pits provide direct measurements of total soil mass and elemental content in depth-based samples representative of large volumes, bypassing potential errors associated with independently measuring soil bulk density, rock volume, and elemental concentrations. The method also allows relatively unbiased sampling of other belowground C and nutrient stocks, including roots, coarse organic fragments, and rocks. We present a comprehensive methodology for sampling these pools with quantitative pits and assess their accuracy, precision, effort, and sampling intensity as compared to other methods. At 14 forested sites in New Hampshire, non-soil belowground pools (which other methods may omit, double-count, or undercount) accounted for upward of 25% of total belowground C and N stocks: coarse material accounted for 4 and 1% of C and N in the 0 horizon; roots were 11 and 4% of C and N in the 0 horizon and 10 and 3% of C and N in the B horizon; and soil adhering to rocks represented 5% of total B-horizon C and N. The top 50 cm of the C horizon contained the equivalent of 17% of B-horizon carbon and N. Sampling procedures should be carefully designed to avoid treating these important pools inconsistently. Quantitative soil pits have fewer sources of systematic error than coring methods; the main disadvantage is that because they are time-consuming and create a larger zone of disturbance, fewer observations can be made than with cores.

Summary: This study investigated the isotopic ratios of carbon and nitrogen in sporocarps of 15 species of wood decay fungi in Finnish Picea abies forests and found that different functional strategies of fungi were reflected in isotopic values. The results showed that the isotopic patterns were influenced by both the functional diversity of wood decay fungi and site-specific factors.

Summary: The vertical distribution of Ectomycorrhizal (EM) and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi in co-occurring forests was studied. EM plant species had longer roots than AM plant species at a shallow depth, while AM plant species had longer roots than EM plant species at a deeper depth. The colonization rates of both EM and AM fungi decreased with depth.

Measurement uncertainty in a national forest inventory :results from the northern region of the USA

Summary: Statistical confidence in estimates of timber volume, carbon storage, and other forest attributes is influenced by uncertainty in field measurements. This study compared measurements made by field crews and quality assurance crews in the US Forest Service's Forest Inventory and Analysis program. The results showed that measurement uncertainty is generally small, but higher for certain variables requiring judgment. Uncertainties in basal area, timber volume, and aboveground biomass were negligible when scaled up to larger areas. Understanding sources of uncertainty is important for forest monitoring, inventory management, and policy decision making.

Summary: Silvicultural thinning can cause rapid microclimatic changes for residual trees. However, thinning may also induce thinning shock, resulting in temporary negative physiological responses as trees adjust to new conditions. In this study, we investigated the impact of thinning on the microclimate and physiology of previously shaded red spruce trees. The results showed that thinning led to increased maximum temperature and vapor pressure deficit, as well as physiological declines in water potential and photosynthetic efficiency.

Physiological response of mature red spruce trees to partial and complete sapwood severing

Summary: This study investigated the effects of simulating drought conditions by disrupting the hydraulic system of red spruce trees on their water relations and photosynthetic efficiency. The results showed that trees with completely severed sapwood experienced rapid water stress, while those with partially severed sapwood maintained better water relations. These findings contribute to our understanding of the physiological responses of red spruce to drought conditions in the future.

Estimating uncertainty in streamflow and solute fluxes at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, New Hampshire, USA

Summary: Stream fluxes are often reported without considering uncertainty, which makes it difficult to evaluate findings or improve monitoring programs. This study conducted a Monte Carlo analysis to estimate the uncertainty in streamflow and solute fluxes in a forested watershed over a 6-year period. The results showed that uncertainty in solute fluxes varied among different solutes, with the analysis of solute concentration being the main source of uncertainty.
