Sorption and desorption are important processes that influence the transport, transformation, and bioavailability of imidacloprid in the soils. Equilibrium batch experiments were carried out using six coastal Croatian soils. The equilibrium sorption and desorption experimental data showed the best fit to the Freundlich equation. Sorption parameters predicted with the Freundlich model, K-F(sor) and 1/n ranged from 2.92 to 5.74 (mg/kg)/(mg/L)(1/n), and 0.888 to 0.919, respectively. The sorption of imidacloprid was found to be sensitive to organic carbon (OC) content. The highest sorption was observed in Krk soil (OC 4.74%) and the lowest in Zadar soil (OC 1.06%). Fitted desorption parameter values, K-F(des), were consistently higher than those associated with sorption. The opposite trend was observed for the exponential parameter 1/n. Results also suggested that imidacloprid sorption-desorption by soil is concentration-dependent, i.e. at lower imidacloprid concentrations a greater sorption percentage and lower desorption percentage occurred. Desorption studies revealed that there was a hysteresis effect in all the tested soils. Hysteresis coefficient values (H) varied from 0.656 to 0.859. The study results emphasize that the controlled application of imidacloprid is obligatory, especially in soils with a low organic carbon content, in order to minimize a risk of environmental and groundwater pollution.

Juniperus communis essential oil limit the biofilm formation of Mycobacterium avium and Mycobacterium intracellulare on polystyrene in a temperature-dependent manner

Dolores Peruc, Brigita Ticac, Dalibor Broznic, Zeljka Maglica, Mladenka Sarolic, Ivana Gobin

Summary: The formation of biofilms allows bacteria to survive in adverse environments, but essential oils can inhibit the formation of biofilms, suggesting their potential as alternative disinfectants for water.

Effects of Long-Term Lead Exposure on Antioxidant Enzyme Defense System in Organs of Brown Hare (Lepus europaeus Pallas) as a Bioindicator of Environmental Pollution in Croatia

Zeljko Linsak, Ivana Gobin, Dijana Tomic Linsak, Dalibor Broznic

Summary: In Croatia's Podravina region, the heavy exploitation of natural gas, thriving agricultural industry, and transportation hub have led to significant lead pollution. This study focused on the bioaccumulation of lead in various organs of hares, particularly the liver, kidney, muscle, and brain, and its impact on the organism's oxidative status. The research also explored a potential ionic mechanism for lead exchange in the brain. The findings showed that long-term lead exposure negatively affected the oxidative status of hares, with the brain and muscles experiencing the strongest toxicity.

The Influence of Hyaluronic Acid Adjunctive Therapy of Periodontitis on Salivary Markers of Oxidative Stress: Randomized, Controlled Clinical Trial

Iwona Olszewska-Czyz, Kristina Kralik, Marin Tota, Jelena Prpic

Summary: Periodontitis is a common oral disease caused by bacteria and immune responses. This study shows that the addition of hyaluronic acid to non-surgical periodontal therapy can increase antioxidants in saliva and improve the prognosis and results of periodontal therapy. Additionally, the levels of gingival inflammation and periodontal destruction are closely related to these markers.

Emerging Contaminant Imidacloprid in Mediterranean Soils: The Risk of Accumulation Is Greater than the Risk of Leaching

Mirna Petkovic Didovic, Tomasz Kowalkowski, Dalibor Broznic

Summary: The transport behavior of Imidacloprid (IMI) in Mediterranean soils in Croatia was studied using column experiments. The results showed that IMI has a high affinity for soil organic matter and does not exhibit sorption activity with clay. Hematite, on the other hand, acts as an active sorbent for IMI and increases the leachability of other insecticides. The study suggests that the risk of IMI accumulation in soils is higher than the risk of leaching contamination, emphasizing the importance of continuous monitoring for soil health protection programs.

Toxicity of Metal Ions Released from a Fixed Orthodontic Appliance to Gastrointestinal Tract Cell Lines

Ksenija Durgo, Suncana Oresic, Marijana Rincic Mlinaric, Zeljka Fiket, Gordana Canadi Juresic

Summary: This study investigates the toxicity and cellular response to metal ions released by fixed orthodontic appliances on gastrointestinal tract cells. The eluates of archwires, brackets, ligatures, and bands were tested for their prooxidant effect, cytotoxicity, and genotoxicity on four different cell lines. The results show that most eluates were toxic to CAL 27 cells and that CaCo-2 cells were the most resistant. The eluates induced free radical formation in AGS and Hep-G2 cells, and eluates containing Cr, Mn, and Al showed slight prooxidant effect and genotoxicity.

Summary: In the pathogenesis of endometriosis, a number of pathological reactions occur. Proteins secreted in the urine are thought to interact with each other and stimulate the pathological processes in endometriosis. An analysis of urine samples from patients with endometriosis and control groups revealed 17 proteins that showed statistically significant differences in concentration. These proteins are involved in various functions related to the disease and may serve as potential biomarkers for endometriosis.

Summary: No clear conclusions can be drawn on ion release from orthodontic appliances due to complex interrelations of multiple factors. This study investigated the morphological and chemical changes of four parts of a fixed orthodontic appliance and analyzed the ion release profiles using SEM/EDX and ICP-MS techniques. The results showed variations in surface morphologies among different parts of the appliance and observed differences in ion release. SEM/EDX proved to be less sensitive than ICP-MS in detecting ion release.
