Summary: In many countries, a significant percentage of traffic accidents occur at junctions, highlighting the importance of reducing junction accidents for achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals. A study in Japan investigated the impact of junction intervals and angles on accident severity and found that shorter intervals between adjacent junctions can help reduce the risk of serious accidents, contrary to current road safety guidelines. The study also found no evidence supporting the idea that roads should meet at a right angle to reduce traffic accidents. These findings suggest the need for updated road safety guidelines to improve junction safety.

Summary: Traffic enforcement cameras can have unintended consequences such as an increase in rear-end collisions at intersections with red-light cameras and erratic driving speeds on highways due to speed cameras. One possible solution is to decorate the camera housings to improve their visibility, but this may also distract drivers. This study evaluates different decorated designs of camera housing and their impact on conspicuity and driver distraction.

Summary: The population of children in Japan has been steadily declining and the percentage of children aged 14 and under is lower than in other countries. In order to protect children from traffic accidents, it is important to understand the road structures where accidents involving walking or bicycle-riding children occur. The results of this study show that accidents involving elementary school students and younger children are more likely to occur on one-lane roads, roads with no division, and roads with a speed limit of 30 km/h or less. Raising traffic safety awareness among automobile drivers using community roads is crucial in reducing pedestrian and bicycle accidents for elementary school students and younger children.

Summary: The International Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) recommends the use of metformin (MET) for metabolic disturbances and hyperglycemia in children and adolescents. However, a potential concern of MET therapy is vitamin B-12 deficiency, which has mainly been observed in studies conducted on adults. In this case-control study, it was found that children and adolescents on MET therapy had suboptimal intake of vitamin B-12 and may experience synergistic reduction in circulating vitamin B-12 concentrations when paired with MET. Therefore, caution is needed when prescribing MET for this age group and vitamin B-12 replacement may be necessary.

Summary: Adolescent classical ballet dancers are at risk of nutritional vulnerability due to their need to maintain a lean body shape during a period of rapid growth. Research on adult dancers has shown a high risk of disordered eating behaviors (DEBs), but there is limited research on adolescent dancers. This study compared body composition, dietary habits, and DEBs between female adolescent classical ballet dancers and their non-dancer peers. Results showed that the dancers had lower weight, BMIs, and body circumferences, along with leaner skinfolds and less fat mass compared to the controls. However, no significant differences were found in eating habits and DEB scores between the two groups, although 23.3% of participants scored >= 20 on the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26), indicating the presence of DEBs.

Summary: Recently, there has been an increased focus on the psychosocial aspects of food allergy (FA) in addition to medical diagnosis and treatment. This systematic review examined the scientific evidence on Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) among children and adolescents with FAs from January 2015 to April 2022. The review included 28 research studies from three databases and found that most children and adolescents with FAs had average levels of HRQoL, with girls and older children experiencing more negative impacts. Few studies compared HRQoL between children with FA and healthy children, but some showed worse HRQoL for children with FAs. Immunotherapy was found to improve the QoL of children with FAs, while factors such as anaphylaxis history and severity of symptoms negatively impacted QoL. More comparative studies are needed to improve the QoL of children with FAs.
