Summary: This study investigated the molecular characteristics and antimicrobial susceptibility of penicillinase-producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae (PPNG) isolates collected in Fukuoka, Japan, from 1996-2018. The results showed an increase in the proportion of PPNG carrying the bla(TEM135) allele, which is a possible direct precursor of an extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL), over the last 12 years, raising particular concerns.

Summary: Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates collected in Nanjing, China that showed decreased susceptibility or resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins (ESCs) were found to have varying susceptibility to ertapenem. The study also identified genetic determinants of ESC resistance and analyzed associations with ertapenem susceptibility. The findings suggest that ertapenem may be an effective therapy for ESC-resistant isolates with identifiable resistance determinants.

Summary: Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the causative agent of gonorrhea, presents a major public health problem due to resistance to beta-lactam class drugs. Chromosomal mutations contribute to resistance to ceftriaxone and cefepime, while mutations in the gene encoding beta-lactamase in penicillinase plasmid poses a serious threat. The study found a variety of penicillinase plasmid types in N. gonorrhoeae, with dominant beta-lactamase types changing over the years.

Summary: This study examined epidemiological and clinical factors associated with gonorrhea in women exposed to men with gonococcal urethritis in China. The findings showed high prevalence of N. gonorrhoeae infections in women, with many experiencing symptoms and inflammatory responses. The study highlights the importance of determining target populations for gonococcal vaccine strategies.

Summary: This study analyzed national surveillance data on urogenital gonorrhea in Mexico from 2003 to 2019 and the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed a significant increase in urogenital gonorrhea cases after 2016, and during the first year of the pandemic, there was a significant increase in infection rates among females aged 24-44. The distribution of urogenital gonorrhea was heterogeneous, with higher incidences in border states. Furthermore, urogenital gonorrhea occurrence was associated with summer temperatures.

Summary: Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a major global health threat with high levels of antimicrobial resistance. The gonococcal β-lactamase plasmid, pbla, carries the TEM β-lactamase and its variants play a crucial role in the spread of antibiotic resistance in N. gonorrhoeae. The distribution and variation of pbla are important for understanding and predicting the spread of plasmid-mediated resistance in this pathogen.

Summary: This study described the molecular epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance and the distribution of resistance-associated genotypes in Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Shenzhen, China from 2014 to 2018. Typing schemes revealed specific genotypes associated with decreased susceptibility to ceftriaxone, with certain sequence types showing international spread.

Summary: This review examines the clinical manifestations of gonorrhoea, discusses their relation to disease severity and virulence factors, and explores the mechanisms and variations of these factors. The impact of phase variation during infection is studied, and whole-genome-sequence-based approaches for vaccine development are discussed. The potential of using whole-genome-sequence data to predict the severity of gonococcal infection is also explored.

Summary: This paper presents the issues related to the increasing drug resistance and spread of multidrug-resistant clones of Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It discusses the resistance mechanisms of N. gonorrhoeae to beta-lactam antibiotics and the occurrence of resistance to other antibiotics. The paper also covers the epidemiological types of multidrug-resistant N. gonorrhoeae and presents new perspectives on the treatment of N. gonorrhoeae infections, including new drugs active against multidrug-resistant strains.

Summary: This study found that Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains carrying plasmids exhibited high-level resistance to β-lactam antibiotics. However, these plasmid-carrying strains showed reduced viability, possibly due to the additional reproduction costs of the plasmid and the expression of ESBLs. This finding may explain the absence of ESBL-producing N. gonorrhoeae clinical isolates.
