The aim of this systematic review was to assess the effect of vitamin D supplementation on glucose and insulin metabolism in overweight and obese subjects. The search process was based on the selection of publications listed in the databases: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Knowledge, Embase and the Cochrane library that met the inclusion criteria. Twelve randomized controlled trials were included. The analysed population consisted of 1181 individuals with BMIs >23 kg/m2. Changes in the concentration of 25(OH)D, fasting glucose, insulin and the HOMA-IR index were assessed. In the meta-regression analysis, a restricted maximum likelihood method was applied. To combine individual study results, a meta-analysis was performed. Vitamin D supplementation did not have an effect on glucose concentrations, insulin level and HOMA-IR values when the supplemented dose, time of supplementation and baseline of 25(OH)D concentration were taken under consideration in subgroup-analysis. This meta-analysis provides evidence that vitamin D supplementation has no significant effect on glucose and insulin metabolism in overweight and obese individuals.

SARS-CoV-2 and Influenza Vaccines in People with Excessive Body Mass-A Narrative Review

Julia Drozdzynska, Wiktoria Jakubowska, Marika Kemus, Martyna Krokowska, Konrad Karpezo, Marcelina Wisniewska, Pawel Bogdanski, Damian Skrypnik

Summary: This review examines the effectiveness of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza vaccines in overweight and obese patients and highlights the impact of excess body weight on the immune system. It suggests that while vaccines can reduce morbidity in normal-weight and excess body mass individuals, patients with higher BMI tend to lose antibodies more quickly.

Association of Serum Omentin-1 Concentration with the Content of Adipose Tissue and Glucose Tolerance in Subjects with Central Obesity

Marcelina Sperling, Teresa Grzelak, Marta Pelczynska, Pawel Bogdanski, Dorota Formanowicz, Krystyna Czyzewska

Summary: Omentin-1 levels are associated with central obesity and abnormal glucose tolerance, with lower levels found in obese patients and men with abnormal glucose tolerance. Gender, tissue insulin sensitivity, WHR, and body fat amount all have significant effects on serum omentin-1 concentration. High omentin-1 levels in men with obesity and normal glucose tolerance suggest a protective effect against metabolic disorders associated with obesity in males.

Summary: Obesity is a chronic condition characterized by the accumulation of excessive fat in the body, and is often accompanied by health consequences. The treatment of obesity involves a comprehensive approach that includes diet, exercise, medication, surgery, and psychological support. The effectiveness of probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics in weight control has been studied, but the findings are inconclusive due to the heterogeneity of the studies.

Leptin-VEGF crosstalk in excess body mass and related disorders: A systematic review

Damian Skrypnik, Katarzyna Skrypnik, Joanna Suliburska, Pawel Bogdanski

Summary: By 2030, it is estimated that there will be a billion people suffering from obesity. Adipose tissue produces leptin, which affects cardiovascular risk by intensifying the synthesis of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Recent studies have shown the significant role of leptin-VEGF crosstalk in obesity and related disorders. In vitro, animal, and human research have demonstrated the importance of endothelial cell and adipocyte interaction, hypoxia, high-fat diet, and genetic and epigenetic mechanisms in this crosstalk.

Androgen Deprivation Therapy for Prostate Cancer Influences Body Composition Increasing Risk of Sarcopenia

Jolanta Korczak, Marcin Mardas, Maria Litwiniuk, Pawel Bogdanski, Marta Stelmach-Mardas

Summary: This study aimed to assess the nutritional status, including sarcopenia development based on CT scans, in prostate cancer patients and its association with progression-free survival (PFS). The results showed that nutritional status was significantly related to PFS. There was a significant reduction in muscle tissue and increase in fat tissue in patients, but it had no impact on PFS. The study recommends assessing nutritional status and body composition using CT after castration therapy.

Anna Andrzejczak, Agata Witkowicz, Dorota Kujawa, Damian Skrypnik, Monika Szulinska, Pawel Bogdanski, Lukasz Laczmanski, Lidia Karabon

Summary: The number of people suffering from metabolic syndrome (MetS), including type 2 diabetes (T2DM), hypertension, and obesity, has increased over 10 times in the last 30 years, posing a severe public health concern worldwide. Uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) is a mitochondrial carrier protein found in brown adipose tissue and is involved in thermogenesis and energy expenditure. This study aimed to identify new UCP1 gene variants potentially associated with MetS and/or T2DM risk by performing NGS sequencing of the entire UCP1 gene. The results revealed 12 new variants, including rs3811787 which has been previously studied, that may have implications for MetS and/or T2DM risk in the Polish population.

The Preventive Mechanisms of Bioactive Food Compounds against Obesity-Induced Inflammation

Marta Pelczynska, Malgorzata Moszak, Agnieszka Wesolek, Pawel Bogdanski

Summary: Dietary patterns, specifically those containing bioactive food compounds such as polyphenols, unsaturated fatty acids, and probiotics, show promise in preventing and treating obesity-induced inflammation. These compounds modulate the secretion of inflammatory molecules, regulate gene expression, and modify signaling pathways involved in the inflammatory response. However, further research is needed to determine optimal strategies for their intake, and global education is necessary to promote the advantages of consuming bioactive food compounds and combat unhealthy dietary patterns.

Marcelina Sperling, Teresa Grzelak, Marta Pelczynska, Pawel Bogdanski, Krystyna Czyzewska, Dorota Formanowicz

Summary: Adipolin, neprilysin, and chemerin have pleiotropic properties that can influence health complications associated with obesity. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between adipokine levels and anthropometric and metabolic parameters, as well as blood pressure values, while considering gender and age. The results showed correlations between chemerin concentration and glucose levels in obese women, adipolin concentration and LDL-C serum concentration in obese individuals with normal glucose tolerance, and chemerin concentration and triglyceride levels in men. High chemerin levels were also associated with elevated triglyceride levels in men. Furthermore, age was found to affect the frequency of high plasma adipolin concentrations, but only in individuals with a BMI less than 30 kg/m(2). The study also revealed interrelationships between the concentrations of the studied adipokines.
