Purpose - This article aims to review the different devices that are available for the in situ monitoring of analytes found in the marine environment. Design/methodology/approach - Following a short introduction to the topic, this paper discusses physical- and chemical-based sensors, automatic analysers (flow injection, spectroscopic and spectrometric), electrochemical devices and biosensors. Findings - A wide range of in situ monitoring systems (and associated deployment apparatus) for measuring concentrations of various analytes (e.g. nutrients, organic chemicals and metallic elements) have been developed in recent decades. Many of these systems are still at the laboratory or prototype stage and are yet to be fully developed into commercially available products. The harsh conditions often found in the marine environment can further limit the utility and application of these sensors. Further development work is needed; however, the need now is for field deployments, validation and inter-calibration between sensors and other analytical measurement techniques. Originality/value - This paper provides up-to-date information on in situ technologies that are available, either at the laboratory and prototype stages or commercially, and are suitable for deployment in the marine environment. Applications of these sensing systems are discussed together with their associated advantages and disadvantages over other existing water monitoring methods.

Summary: The study evaluates the impact of seawater physico-chemical characteristics on the relationship between metal concentrations measured by passive samplers and discrete water samples. The results indicate that the variability in metal content in waters, rather than environmental conditions, affects the ratios. These ratios were not significantly affected by various environmental factors, providing confidence in the techniques used. This simplicity could aid in implementing passive sampling techniques like DGTs in monitoring networks within regulatory frameworks like the EU Water Framework Directive.

Passive sampling with suspect screening of polar pesticides and multivariate analysis in river catchments: Informing environmental risk assessments and designing future monitoring programmes

Adam C. Taylor, Graham A. Mills, Anthony Gravell, Mark Kerwick, Gary R. Fones

Summary: This study focused on the pollution of surface water by polar pesticides in river catchments, developing a novel strategy using passive sampling coupled to suspect screening and multivariate analysis. A total of 128 different classes of pesticides were identified using high-resolution liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Statistical analysis revealed pesticide sources and fate, prioritizing 61 pesticides for risk assessment and designing a seasonal monitoring program. Incorporating passive sampling coupled to suspect screening into regulatory monitoring could better inform water quality management practices and reduce operational costs.

Robinson, Gary R. Fones, Hao Zhang, Marco Schintu, Natalia Montero, Barbara Marras

Summary: This study investigates the relationships among different chemical forms of Ni, Cd, and Pb in coastal and transitional waters across a broad geographical scale. The concentrations of metals vary greatly among sampling sites and methodologies, mainly due to natural water fluctuations. The labile fractions of Cd and Pb in spot samples are highly correlated, with Pb's labile fraction significantly lower than Cd's.

A miniaturized passive sampling-based workflow for monitoring chemicals of emerging concern in water

Alexandra K. Richardson, Rachel C. Irlam, Helena Rapp Wright, Graham A. Mills, Gary R. Fones, Stephen R. Stuerzenbaum, David A. Cowan, David J. Neep, Leon P. Barron

Summary: This study presents a miniaturized workflow for identification and monitoring of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). It discusses the development of a low-cost small 3D-printed passive sampler device and a highly sensitive liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method. The field testing of the new 3D-PSD showed the successful identification of a higher number of CECs compared to traditional water samples.

Pesticide fate during drinking water treatment determined through passive sampling combined with suspect screening and multivariate statistical analysis

Adam C. Taylor, Graham A. Mills, Anthony Gravell, Mark Kerwick, Gary R. Fones

Summary: In this study, the fate of pesticides in a drinking water treatment plant was investigated using passive sampling and screening analysis. It was found that granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration played a major role in pesticide removal, but the efficiency varied for different pesticides during episodes of pollution. A management plan was developed to control and respond to high-priority pesticides.

Occurrence of organic pollutants in the River Itchen and River Test-two chalk streams in Southern England, UK

Rosamund F. A. Robinson, Graham A. Mills, Anthony Gravell, Melanie Schumacher, Gary R. Fones

Summary: The River Itchen and River Test in Southern England, known for their special scientific interest, are facing environmental pressures from human inputs of organic pollutants. A research was conducted to investigate the presence of these chemicals in the two catchments. Water samples were collected and analyzed, revealing the occurrence of various pharmaceuticals, personal care products, plant protection products, and industrial chemicals. The main sources were identified as point discharges from wastewater treatment plants for pharmaceuticals and personal care products, and agricultural activities for plant protection products.

Rapid direct analysis of river water and machine learning assisted suspect screening of emerging contaminants in passive sampler extracts

Alexandra K. Richardson, Marcus Chadha, Helena Rapp-Wright, Graham A. Mills, Gary R. Fones, Anthony Gravell, Stephen Sturzenbaum, David A. Cowan, David J. Neep, Leon P. Barron

Summary: This study presents a novel and rapid approach using multi-residue targeted analysis and machine learning-assisted in silico suspect screening to characterise the occurrence of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in river water. By deploying passive samplers configured with HLB sorbents in the tidal River Thames catchment, differences in the presence of various compounds between summer and winter campaigns were observed. The innovation in this approach lies in the convenience of combining passive sampling with machine learning-assisted chemical analysis for rapid and time-integrated monitoring of CECs in the catchment.
