Constraints on natural global atmospheric CO2 fluxes from 1860 to 2010 using a simplified explicit forward model

Land-use changes until the beginning of the 20th century made the terrestrial biosphere a net source of atmospheric carbon. Later, burning of fossil fuel surpassed land use changes as the major anthropogenic source of carbon. The terrestrial biosphere is at present suggested to be a carbon sink, but the distribution of excess anthropogenic carbon to the ocean and biosphere sinks is highly uncertain. Our modeling suggest that land-use changes can be tracked quite well by the carbon isotopes until mid-20th century, whereas burning of fossil fuel dominates the present-day observed changes in the isotope signature. The modeling indicates that the global carbon isotope fractionation has not changed significantly during the last 150 years. Furthermore, increased uptake of carbon by the ocean and increasing temperatures does not yet appear to have resulted in increasing the global gross ocean-to-atmosphere carbon fluxes. This may however change in the future when the excess carbon will emerge in the ocean upwelling zones, possibly reducing the net-uptake of carbon compared to the present-day ocean.

Effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on recovery in lower limb muscle strength and gait function following spinal cord injury: a randomized controlled trial

Summary: This study investigated the effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on lower limb muscle strength and gait function during spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation. Results showed a more prominent increase in muscle strength in the rTMS group, although no clear main effects were observed. High-frequency rTMS may enhance long-term muscle strength recovery following SCI, while the effect on short-term recovery remains unclear.

The results showed that BFR did not cause pain increases or adverse events, and there were no significant changes in neuromuscular activity. Therefore, it is safe and feasible for these patients to perform exercise with low load and appropriate BFR.

PIEZO1 gain-of-function gene variant is associated with elevated tendon stiffness in humans

Summary: Prolonged periods of increased physical demands can cause both positive and negative adaptations in tendons, depending on the underlying mechanisms. The PIEZO1 ion channel has been implicated in tendon mechanotransduction and the E756del gain-of-function variant has been linked to improved jumping performance. This study found that carrying the E756del gene variant was associated with increased patellar tendon stiffness in humans, but there was no correlation between tendon stiffness and jumping performance.

Summary: Lewis et al. investigated the influence of training status on relaxed myosin conformations and found that moderate physical activity leads to a shift in relaxed myosin conformation, resulting in reduced ATP consumption. Their study revealed that physical activity level and training type can influence resting skeletal muscle myosin dynamics, suggesting that environmental stimuli such as exercise can rewire the molecular metabolism of human skeletal muscle through myosin.

Increased mitochondrial surface area and cristae density in the skeletal muscle of strength athletes

Summary: This study investigated the mitochondrial structural characteristics in skeletal muscle of strength athletes compared to untrained controls. The results showed that strength athletes had increased mitochondrial cristae density, decreased mitochondrial size, and increased surface-to-volume ratio in their mitochondrial pool, despite similar mitochondrial volume density. In addition, resistance exercise led to mild mitochondrial stress but did not increase the number of damaged mitochondria. Moreover, the study found that acute resistance exercise increased the expression of markers of mitochondrial biogenesis, fission, and mitochondrial unfolded protein responses (UPRmt), and strength-trained individuals showed an enrichment of the UPRmt in their basal transcriptome. These findings suggest that strength athletes have a unique mitochondrial remodeling that minimizes the space required for mitochondria.

Hormonal, immune, and oxidative stress responses to blood flow-restricted exercise

Summary: This study evaluated the hormonal, immune, and oxidative stress responses in healthy adults following low-load blood-flow restricted resistance exercise (LL-BFRRE) and conventional free-flow resistance exercise (FFRE). The results showed that LL-BFRRE induced higher hormone and immune responses compared to FFRE, and had attenuated oxidative stress responses compared to HL-FFRE.

Influence of muscle strength, power, and rapid force capacity on maximal club head speed in male national level golfers

Summary: This study examined the relationship between maximal club head speed (CHS) and physiological and anthropometric factors in 21 national-level male golfers. The study found that CHS was positively correlated with measures of strength, power, and trunk rotation. Participants with high CHS demonstrated greater strength, power, and trunk rotation compared to those with low CHS. Improving neuromuscular strength and power may be important for golfers to increase CHS and driving distance.

The recovery of muscle function and glycogen levels following game-play in young elite male ice hockey players

The results showed that muscle glycogen content and muscle function decreased significantly after the game, but the impact on repeated-sprint ability was minimal and fully recovered within 1-2 days postgame.
