Obesity as a chronic disease is a major factor for insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes, which has become a global health problem. In the present study, we used resting state functional MRI to investigate the amplitude of low frequency fluctuations of spontaneous signal during both hunger and satiety states in 20 lean and 20 obese males. We found that, before food intake, obese men had significantly greater baseline activity in the precuneus and lesser activity in dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) relative to lean subjects. Furthermore, after food intake, obese males had significantly lesser activity in dACC than lean males. We further found a significant positive correlation between precuneus activation and hunger ratings before food intake, while dACC activity was negatively correlated with plasma insulin levels before and after food intake. These results indicated that both precuneus and dACC may play an important role in eating behavior. While precuneus rather seemed to mediate subjective satiety, dACC levels rather reflected indirect measures of glucose utilization.

The neural correlates of amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation: a multimodal resting-state MEG and fMRI-EEG study

Jianfeng Zhang, Dong-Qiang Liu, Shufang Qian, Xiujuan Qu, Peiwen Zhang, Nai Ding, Yu-Feng Zang

Summary: This study investigates the neural correlates of fMRI-ALFF by comparing the amplitude differences between eyes-closed and eyes-open states in fMRI and MEG. The results show that MEG-ALFF increases at parietal sensors, overlapping with the EC-EO differences observed in fMRI. These findings suggest that the amplitude in MEG reflects distinct physiological information and that fMRI-ALFF may be related to the ALFF in neural activity.

Environmental neuroscience linking exposome to brain structure and function underlying cognition and behavior

Feng Liu, Jiayuan Xu, Lining Guo, Wen Qin, Meng Liang, Gunter Schumann, Chunshui Yu

Summary: Individual differences in human brain structure, function, and behavior can be explained by genetic variations, environmental exposures, and their interactions. While genetic variants associated with brain imaging phenotypes have been identified, the environmental exposures related to these phenotypes are largely unknown. This study proposes that research in environmental neuroscience should focus on understanding the associations between lifetime environmental exposures and brain imaging phenotypes, as well as identifying cumulative environmental effects and their vulnerable age windows.

Summary: Subcortical ischemic stroke can cause long-lasting changes in the cerebral cortex. This study investigated the relationship between cortical structural changes, motor recovery, lesion location, and early impairment of specific subsets of fibers in the corticospinal tract (CST) in patients with subcortical stroke. The findings revealed different patterns of cortical structural changes in patients with partial and complete recovery, which were associated with lesion location and impairment of specific CST fiber subsets.

Summary: This study tested the reliability and validity of a new functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) metric called Wavelet-ALFF, and applied it to investigate the modulation effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). The results showed that Wavelet-ALFF had higher reliability and validity compared to the previous metric FFT-ALFF, especially in higher frequency bands. Wavelet db2-ALFF showed the best reliability and validity, suggesting it can be a powerful tool for examining regional spontaneous brain activities in future studies.

Summary: Evidence suggests that dysregulation of the dopamine (DA) system and dysfunction of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) may contribute to the development of schizophrenia. However, the relationship between DA genes, PFC morphology, and schizophrenia is still not fully understood. In this study, we analyzed brain gene expression data and structural magnetic resonance imaging data to identify specific PFC subregions that are associated with the expression profiles of DA genes. We found that some PFC subregions showed abnormal increases in gray matter volume covariance with other brain regions in schizophrenia patients. Furthermore, our analysis of postmortem expression data revealed reduced coexpression of DA genes between the middle frontal gyrus and hippocampus in schizophrenia patients, with these genes being implicated in brain functions related to working memory, reward processing, speech production, and episodic memory.

Summary: The study used arterial spin labeling (ASL) to investigate abnormal cerebral blood flow (CBF) in patients with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) and its associations with disease duration and neuro-ophthalmological impairment. The results showed differences in brain regions of LHON patients, including the left sensorimotor and bilateral visual areas. LHON patients had lower CBF in the bilateral calcarine compared to healthy controls. Chronic LHON patients also showed lower CBF in the left middle frontal gyrus, sensorimotor cortex, and temporal-partial junction. Disease duration and neuro-ophthalmological impairments were found to affect the metabolism of non-visual areas.

Summary: High childhood emotional maltreatment (CM-EMO) is associated with an increased risk for psychopathology, potentially through alterations in gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA). The pregenual anterior cingulate cortex (pgACC) is an important brain region for emotion processing, and its' GABA levels are implicated in mood and anxiety disorders. This study examined the association between self-reported CM-EMO in adulthood and GABA+ levels in the pgACC, finding a negative relationship between CM-EMO-NEG and GABA+/tCr in the pgACC.

Short-term effect of coil handle orientations on fMRI-guided rTMS on insomnia: A case report

Zi-Jian Feng, Qiu-Ying Song, Yu Han, Zi-Yu Wei, Cong Fu, Yu-Feng Zang

Summary: This case report investigates the short-term effects of functional connectivity-guided rTMS with coil handle orientations of posterior-anterior 45 degrees (PA45 degrees) and posterior-anterior 135 degrees (PA135 degrees) on a patient with insomnia. The results show that the PA45 degrees orientation outperforms the PA135 degrees orientation in both resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and motor evoked potentials outcomes. Additionally, a 9-day rTMS treatment leads to improvements in symptoms of depression and anxiety, as well as a modest enhancement in sleep quality.

Summary: This retrospective study found that evaluating CST-LL from additional motor origins, such as the ventral premotor cortex, is more strongly associated with post-stroke motor severity than using CST-LL originating from primary motor cortex alone. This suggests that higher order motor regions add clinical relevance to motor impairment.
