Despite being critical for normal brain function, the pools that supply docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) to the brain are not agreed upon. Using multiple kinetic models in free-living adult rats, we first demonstrate that DHA uptake from the plasma non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) pool predicts brain uptake of DHA upon oral administration, which enters the plasma NEFA pool as well as multiple plasma esterified pools. The rate of DHA loss by the brain is similar to the uptake from the plasma NEFA pool. Furthermore, upon acute iv administration, although more radiolabeled lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC)-DHA enters the brain than NEFA-DHA, this is due to the longer plasma half-life and exposure to the brain. Direct comparison of the uptake rate of LPC-DHA and NEFA-DHA demonstrates that uptake of NEFA-DHA into the brain is 10-fold greater than LPC-DHA. In conclusion, plasma NEFA-DHA is the major plasma pool supplying the brain.

McArdle, Carmen Pelaez, Kristina Pentieva, Alfonso Siani, Frank Thies, Sophia Tsabouri, Marco Vinceti, Peter Aggett, Marta Crous Bou, Francesco Cubadda, Laura Ciccolallo, Agnes de Sesmaisons Lecarre, Lucia Fabiani, Ariane Titz, Androniki Naska

Summary: Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens delivered a scientific opinion on the tolerable upper intake level for selenium. Based on systematic reviews of the literature, they established a UL of 255 μg/day for adult men and women. The ULs for children were derived from the UL for adults using allometric scaling. Intake of selenium from natural food sources does not raise concerns, but caution should be exercised when using selenium-containing supplements in toddlers and children.

Habitual consumption of high-fibre bread fortified with bean hulls increased plasma indole-3-propionic concentration and decreased putrescine and deoxycholic acid faecal concentrations in healthy volunteers

Summary: Only a small percentage of UK adults meet the daily recommendation for dietary fiber. Bean hull fortified bread was created to increase the intake of dietary fiber while reducing waste. This study found that bean hull rolls provide a high amount of dietary fiber but have poor systemic bioavailability, suggesting further processing is needed to improve their effectiveness.

Summary: Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) evaluated the safety of a carotenoid-rich extract from yellow/orange tomatoes, which is proposed to be used as a novel food ingredient. The extract contains phytoene, phytofluene, beta-carotene, zeta-carotene, and lycopene, and is produced through supercritical CO2 extraction. The applicant intends to use the extract in cereal bars, functional drinks, and as a food supplement for individuals above 15 years old. However, due to insufficient safety data and potential exceedance of acceptable daily intake for lycopene, the Panel concluded that the safety of the extract has not been established under the proposed conditions of use.

Summary: In response to a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens conducted a scientific evaluation on the tolerable upper intake level (UL) for vitamin B6. The evaluation established that excessive intake of vitamin B6 can lead to peripheral neuropathy. Based on a case-control study, case reports, and vigilance data, the Panel identified a reference point of 50 mg/day, and after applying an uncertainty factor, set the UL for vitamin B6 at 12.5 mg/day.

Summary: Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) concluded that 6'-sialyllactose (6'-SL) sodium salt is safe as a novel food. The NF is mainly composed of human-identical milk oligosaccharide (HiMO) 6'-SL (sodium salt) and is produced through fermentation by a genetically modified strain of E. coli. The applicant intends to use the NF in various foods for the general population, and since it is similar to a previously assessed 6'-SL sodium salt, no new estimates of intake were carried out.

Summary: The EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens evaluated the UV-treated powder of whole yellow mealworm as a novel food. The powder is mainly made up of crude protein, fat, digestible carbohydrates and fiber. The true protein content of the powder is overestimated due to the presence of non-protein nitrogen. The UV treatment does not significantly contribute to dietary vitamin D3. The NF is considered safe for consumption, with the exception of potential allergenicity.

Analysis of omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid metabolism by compound-specific isotope analysis in humans

Daniel K. Chen, Adam H. Metherel, Kimia Rezaei, Camilla Parzanini, Chuck T. Chen, Christopher E. Ramsden, Mark Horowitz, Keturah R. Faurot, Beth Macintosh, Daisy Zamora, Richard P. Bazinet

Summary: This study used natural variations in the 13C:12C ratio of food to analyze the metabolism of LNA and EPA to DHA. The results showed that after LNA intake, plasma LNA concentrations remained unchanged while the 613C signature of LNA in the H6 group increased over time. In contrast, the H3H6 and H3 groups demonstrated an increase in plasma EPA and DHA concentrations after EPA intake. Additionally, compound-specific isotope analysis can be used to track the metabolism of dietary fatty acids in humans.
